    Tony, I am so glad I found you. I, too, found you thru Andy’s channel, Which showed up miraculously yesterday on my CZcams. I read your comment and popped over here to check you out. How refreshing. Thank you.

    Thank you Tony, this really helps a lot. Here in Alabama we have red clay and sometimes if you're lucky you find a vein of white clay. I've just never found much on temper, the proportions or how to use it properly.

    Hi, Tony! Could I bother you with another question: Does the sand sink to the bottom in those troughs, or does it stay in suspension?

    • @tonysoaresnativeclays1434
      @tonysoaresnativeclays1434  Před 3 lety +2

      With some clay’s it will stay in suspension, I usually don’t give it time to drop in the buckets but it may drop in the plaster troughs. You definitely have to wedge to clay before using. It helps if you keep the clay as thick as possible while straining. Some clays need more water then others. Hope this helps, always up for questions 😀

      Yes I try to make a bunch during the summer, I don’t keep track but maybe 10 or 20 times, and yes I shovel a lot of debris with the brown clays, the light clay iAds sand to it. The area is always a hot mess😜

    Hi, I'm just getting into pottery, and digging my own clay, is the sand to stop the pottery exploding while firing in the kiln, and how do you know how much sand you need ? I have seen a good clay deposits at Tue beach, would this be good clay to use to fire and make things like plates and cups, I know they need glazed to waterproof them, but would the clay be ok for the above mentioned ? Thanks, and great video..

    • @tonysoaresnativeclays1434
      @tonysoaresnativeclays1434  Před rokem +2

      I’m not sure if the clay will fire to a high enough temp to melt glaze, maybe an .06 glaze. Don’t know the clay body. About 20 percent sand to clay . It helps with drying and firing. It is a binder

    What the sand added is for ?

    • @tonysoaresnativeclays1434
      @tonysoaresnativeclays1434  Před 2 lety +1

      The sand is added for temper, it helps to keep the clay from shrinking, cracking, or popping in the drying or firing. The clay is very pure when I find it. It needs something to loosen it up so I can work with it.😀

    You said that your clay contains gypsum. Doesn't gypsum harm the plasticity of pottery clay? Gypsum is often used in farming to temporarily break up clay soil before adding in compost. I would expect a clay that contains gypsum to have poor plasticity.

    • @tonysoaresnativeclays1434
      @tonysoaresnativeclays1434  Před 11 měsíci

      They are either small gypsum crystals that can be strained out or gypsum salts that can migrate to the surface to make a scum coat which fires whitish or sometimes I rinse the salts out.
