How to Paint Over Chrome

  • If you have Chrome parts that you want to paint then watch this video and I will take you through the best tips for success. Your biggest problem when painting over chrome will be adhesion. So be sure to etch into the chrome surface with some coarse sandpaper or even a small grinder, in this instance I decided to use 80 grit Sand Paper on an orbital sander and did the hard to reach spots with 80 grit by hand.
    Next I set the parts up on a stand in the Spray Booth.
    Now we have etched into the chrome we must clean it down with Wax & Grease Remover (Prepsol), by covering the entire surface, I use an atomizer bottle and spray it on then wipe off with clean bleached rags, then use high pressured air with a tack cloth to remove any left over pieces of dust on the surface.
    The next step is to mix our primer, it is very important that you use a 2 Pack Epoxy Primer, to the best of my knowledge there is no other products on the market that will give you adhesion like the Epoxy Primers will. Your average high build Automotive Primers and even Etch Primers will not stick to chrome surfaces. As always be sure to wear the correct safety gear because these primers are extremely dangerous to your health, especially Epoxy Primers with Chromate in them.
    Most primers can be used either as a Wet on Wet / Non Sanding application or as a fill and sand, so depending on the quality surface you are going over you may want to seal it with epoxy to get your adhesion then do some repairs with filler then use a normal Automotive High Build Primer and continue with the job as usual. In this case I didn't need to do any repairs and the parts were in good enough nick to use the Epoxy Primer as a Wet on Wet.
    In this instance I am using an Akzo Nobel product High Solids Epoxy Primer but ask your local paint supplier for a good HS Epoxy Primer andd they should have a product just as good.
    Then continue with my basecoat and clearcoat the same as on any job or direct gloss 2K if required, as always observe flash off times. As always don't forget to use a paint strainer for all paint that goes into your gun.
    Leave a comment below and I'll do my best to get back to any relevant questions.

    Another great vid gunman. The sgk was my first devilbiss gun and i have to admit i had concerns over how long the little seal on the nozzle etc was going to last before leaking but you are working the bum off yours and it just keeps on spraying, they really are a great gun for the money. On another note I had my first spray out of my new pro lite yesterday, flow coated a bonnet with the te20 aircap with full fluid and 25psi, what a beautiful gun to use i pumped the clear on and the pro lite layed it like glass, just brilliant. Seriously your tips on not just spraying but also on gun choices really have been a fantastic help to me and I am sure others as well, thanks mate your work and effort on these vids is really appreciated.

    Nice one Gunman!
    Ill upload some pics of this land curser i'm doing at work to your facebook it has a huge bullbar and side rails steps and chassis i had to paint in a satin or semi gloss finish. My boss caught me on phone during work and asked me what i was doing with this big frown on his face, I said "looking up Gunman's mixing ratio for matt finishes" He just stared at me o_0. I had to go a little bit different tho as we use water borne at work and had no black base coat, and didn't really want to order any in just for these parts and i also had to do the chassis. But i use PPG Deltron Jet Black Tinter with PPG Delfleet Matt binder the results were great got a nice satin finish was really happy with the results.
    Also have ordered my SGK 600BV / $280 NZD to import from AU brought it from jefferson's paint supplies, Im hoping it arrives in time for me to try out on the body of this land cruiser which is getting painted in PPG DG Deltron. I'll share some picks on FB with you

    Killa man. Really informative video!
    There is another product I used on my restoration called "epotec epoxy primer" made by protec paints. I used the green one as that has the most rust inhibitors. No cromate or any thing. The hardener is like an araldite I think. It's sticky as anything. Goes on flat and sands pretty good.
    One guy painted a hg in it and left it in the weather for 15 years, sanded it back and no rust under the paint. So its good stuff.
    Maybe people who didn't want to spray with cromate could use a product like that. Still gotta wear ppe though as per normal.
    Thought it might help :)

    I purchased a 1-1 ratio epoxy primer and it is so thick! I sprayed through my 1.8 mil primer gun and it is hard to spray out! I asked paint rep if i could thin it out, but he said it would take away from the rust inhibitor properties.

    Gunny I use that Epoxy Primer almost everyday in the Aviation industry. Tough as nails once dried you can even wipe it with M.E.K. and it won't lift..or smudge. Down side highly toxic and if ya need to strip off it takes about 2-3 rounds of stripper which can be time consuming and a pain in the ass.

      It's one of those things I can't guarantee will stick, so if a customer insists on painting them I always tell them I can't guarantee it. Using epoxy primer is the only way to get half a chance of adhesion, basically follow the steps in this video for best chance of adhesion.

    Would sand blasting be enough to prep it for paint?

      I think it would be as long as it's removed some of the outer coating

    Perth must be cool man , your accent sounds like you're from Sydney but I sensed no ego in your voice so I was puzzled lol , good that you mentioned it... Doing this on a little Japanese wooden steering wheel ... Good tutorial. Any ideas of a way (apart from that Plastidip shit) to paint it black but not ruin the chrome if you know what I mean mate?

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 8 lety

      Adhesion is the biggest issue you'll have when painting over chrome and if you want it to stick I do recommend scuffing it up as much as possible then using an epoxy primer, normal etch primers just won't cut it over chrome but it sounds like you want to be able to revert back to chrome later which will be your only problem. Yeah I'm from Melbs and even find after living in Perth for 4 years and going back they are a bit up themselves too, Perth is on the whole a better place if you ask me, better people I reckon.

      The wheel will get a full scuff as you recommend mate and I will get the epoxy primer , keep the great work up! Hope to learn how to paint with your tutorials , pls in future do one for an absolute beginners on a budget starting up and maybe advice on beginner gear , how much to spend or to start with cans VS gun etc ... Cheers !

    That chrome primer is no joke. Your entire room needs specialized ventilation and you should be wearing a full body suit and face shield respirator.

      bare metal doesn't hold a scratch its why u can polish it to a shine when u use softer grits of sandpaper. chrome acts like bare metal if it isn't coated with anything else and u don't remove it all the way

      Ben jij daar zo zeker van? Ik heb bijna alle stukken gezandstraalt van mijn moto, vergeet niet dat gezandstraalt ijzer na een tijdje oxideerd en roest indien je er geen grondlaag spuitmastic en dit en dat... Chrome roest niet de perfecte onderlaag, als je daar een goede hechtende grondverf op zet ben je weer vertrokken. Want er is geen enkele lak zo roestvrij als chrome, als we dat lak mogen noemen tenminste.

    Are the gravity fed guns they sell at Supercheap a "name brand" or are they just crap.

    • @brendanw355
      @brendanw355 Před 9 lety

      Crap, just chinese guns rebranded , I have a couple here and use them for primer and will throw them away when they start to fail. The difference between them and the sgk is huge, better of paying the extra for a good gun i wish I hadn't wasted money on the cheap crap before buying something decent.

      Sherie Thomas hi sherie if the price of the guns are super cheap im sure ther not worth buying :)

    • @jarrodwalker696
      @jarrodwalker696 Před 9 lety

      Sherie Thomas It depends on what you are trying to paint. If you are painting cars or anything that requires a really nice finish. Then and supercheap guns are super crap. If you are painting the fence or house then they do an ok job. However they are crap quality and the seals fail pretty quickly (they leaking paint). They are also air pigs so this will effect the quality of your finish. Spend $200 and get the SGK. As the gunman says, it punches above its weight
