Really? Rubbishing the credentials of a respected journalist and political commentator, largely based on where he lives, does not change the facts. Lesley Riddich failed to address the fundamental flaws in the nationalist argument. Having fully functional broadband does not a functioning economy make.
The reality of course is that Scotland exists in this charmed existence where its residents enjoy fundamentally superior benefits and services than their British counterparts all paid for by courtesy of the English taxpayer. Only recently have Scots felt the bite of additional taxation as the Barnett Formula lottery money can only go so far for the SNP. To suggest Scotland has been "done down" by the union would be laughable if the spectre of separatism was not so real.
half the issue for Scotland is that independence means very different things for Scots. It is possible to support independence and yet reject the SNP values. But overwhelmingly most Scots will gravitate towards socialism. With the implosion of the SNP the Labour party will benefit at the next General election. But an independent Scotland will never become the socialist utopia many Scots crave. With independence comes budgetary responsibility. Scotland currently operates a projected fiscal budget deficit of double digit proportions and has done for years. Only the Barnett Formula bridges the gap between spending and tax revenues; a gap that could not be sustainably bridged by borrowing post independence. Scotland would need to reduce its spending by mammoth proportions and go still further to be considered for EU membership.
But conspiracy theory, misinformation, and blind prejudice will continue to drive the Scottish independence movement with or without the SNP. It is no coincidence that the only demographics who consistently and significantly support independence are the naive idealistic 18-25 age group, those identifying as Irish catholic, and those at the bottom of the income scale. There is a direct correlation between independence support and areas most dependent on welfare. So the push for independence is driven by the bigot, the callowness of youth, and the ne'erdowell.

For example her ramblings about Scottish water still being in public ownership.
There was until not so very long ago a thriving brewing industry in Edinburgh, employing many thousands of people directly and many thousands more indirectly. The charges for water to industry in Scotland is three times what it is in England. It's not profitable to brew any of the famous Scottish beers in Scotland anymore.
      Go Lesley Riddoch
The woman's bitter twisted anger should be directed a lot closer to home.

We don't actually know how bad the situation is in Scotland because it's so poorly monitored compared to everywhere else. Despite this poor coverage we still recorded an astonishing 113,000 hours of sewage released into our waters in 2022 - on a per capita basis this is actually the worst performance in the UK (though that claim comes with a huge pinch of salt given coverage is so poor).

Andrew Neil has just shown how little he really knows or understands about Scotland. Independence is not an anti-English movement, we love the English as our neighbours we just do not want them to be Scotland's government. As for the economy and public services Lesley is correct, public services are in better shape than England and there is no desire to privatize the NHS as seems to be happening in England. As for ship building, if AN did his homework he would know that major shipbuilding across Britain declined under Thatcher, and yes there are major issues with the two ferries seemingly down to dual fuel requirements that are new to the ferry builder, but he declined to reference the Royal Navy ships that have had huge issues and are still not operational. Could go on about the failures Westminster has presided over these past 14 years, but there is no point as the likes of AN gloss over those matters. If Independence for Scotland is so bad for Scotland why does Westminster not grant a Section 30 and put it to the test?
