Ugh this video came at a perfect time. I have my first appointment tomorrow. My office doesn’t allow husbands to attend and when I asked if I could at least FaceTime him or record a little clip of my first ultrasound so he can share in the experience with me, they got loud and rude and said that they ABSOLUTELY DO NOT ALLOW ANY TYPE OF CALLS OR RECORDING. When i asked why they got very defensive and even more loud ( my husband could hear them yelling through the phone from another room and I wasn’t even on speaker) and said because non patients aren’t allowed to see the inside of the rooms because it’s a hippa violation.....( I’ve seen a million CZcamsrs post clips from their appointments) 🧐I’ve been crying for 2 days straight over this. I’ve decided to seek another doctor and in the meantime go to a place I can pay out of packet so my husband and I can see the very first ultrasound together.

I went to my regular OBGYN office when I found out I was pregnant. I usually saw the NP for all my Pap smear so I saw the doctor in the office for the first time. He was horrible. I had a lot of question since it was my first pregnancy. He blew them off and told me not to worry so much. I was PISSED. I found new doctor for my following prenatal appointment. I called the office of that horrible doctor and requested they send my complete medical history over to the new office. They lady on the phone was incredibly rude and gave me a hard time for leaving their practice for a different doctor. My new doctor was lovely and answered every single one of my questions. I felt like I could trust her and she eventually delivered my baby when the time came. Do not stay with a doctor if you don’t like them!

Am I pregnant, nope I'm 6 months pp. Am I still watching, yes yes I am! Love all of your videos Elizabeth❤I chose Midwifery care, I'm in Canada and I loved it! For the first bit I had an OBGYN and I had so much anxiety at every appointment, serious "white coat syndrome"! So when I got the call that a midwife was available I was thrilled! Appointments were longer, about 45mins-1hr I felt more relaxed and better informed by the time it was time to give birth❤I also loved the freedom of choice with place of birth. I could have had a home birth, birth center,or hospital! My goal was birth center but I ended up in the hospital! What I loved about Midwifery care was that once I was in active labour my midwife was there the whole time! And she really helped me feel empowered when labour didn't go according to my "plan" and she let me feel upset when it didn't go to plan! It was amazing! Loved my midwife I so hope I can have her again with my next pregnancy❤

For an international perspective, I just had my first prenatal appt at a birthing center in South Korea. They had me come in at only 5 weeks, didn’t ask any of the questions you mentioned, but they did do a blood and urine test. They also did the transvaginal ultrasound and confirmed the due date. My practice does early testing (like ASAP after a positive test) if you have a history of miscarriage. Some hormone levels can be helped to prevent your chance of miscarrying again, so that would be another good reason to call and make your appointment soon after getting a positive test. 😊 Don’t know if all practices do this, but it would be worth calling and asking if you have a history of miscarriage.

This is neat to hear, in Canada, specifically Ontario, you see your family doctor for your entire first trimester. OBs aren't seen until 20 weeks (unless complications beyond the family doctor's scope arise, also you need a referral from your family doctor to get into an OB -you can request which one you want, or change them, but the concept of not having a family doctor is so strange to me because they're like the gatekeeper lol), or if you choose midwives, they will see you at 14 weeks, and you don't need any referrals, although they will request your records from your family doctor.

That sounds a little intrusive to what I'm used to. I'm on my second pregnancy in BC Canada, and fortunately I haven't had any intravaginal anything at my prenatal visits, except for a membrane sweep at the end of my first pregnancy. The first dating scans were abdominal. I'm not sure of this is the norm but this was my experience. They don't even do routinely checks for dilation in the last weeks and I am absolutely on board with that. They even had me swab myself for the group B test lol 😅 which seemed odd for a first timer but looking back on it, I wouldn't change it!

    • @Nurse_zabe
      @Nurse_zabe  Před 3 lety

Studies show self-swabs for gbs are just as effective as the doctor doing the swab! Crazy, right? And yes, I will say every provider is different, but I think many use this as a time to get a full picture of gynecological health because many people (at least in America) don’t seek out preventative healthcare

I have lupus and we're planning for a pregnancy since I threw my first blood clot back in Oct. On the road to recovery but a pulmonary infarction complicates things even more. As soon as we receive a positive I'll be sent to the fetal/maternal specialist who will be assisting my OB.
Can you do a video on formula here in the U.S.? Would a lactation consultant at the hospital be able to advise on formula? I won't be able to breastfeed because I will need to go back on my lupus medication that isn't save for baby...

I am in central Ohio. I was never asked if I had a cat. I don’t remember any questions about the father’s medical history. I didn’t have a breast exam with either pregnancy. They did ask what I did for a living. This last pregnancy they were more concerned about COVID. They canceled an appointment and didn’t allow anyone to go with me for most appointments. I asked why and she said they didn’t have time to check visitors because it’s double the amount of people. That was the worst excuse ever. For one a support person is not a visitor. The person scanning temperatures at the door was sitting there bored. There was a line cars in the parking lot with men sitting in them. They recently changed their policy and now allow one support person at all maternity appointments. I got pregnant in November 2019 when COVID wasn’t a thing yet. During the biggest time of fear I was in my 2nd and 3rd trimester. I hope the quality of support and care has returned to normal.

It’s definitely tough and I understand their desire to limit exposure, but at what cost?

They never addressed the bleeding or explained anything. I'm now 27 weeks pregnant I ask many questions but all I get is, "it's all normal, your body is just going through the phases...etc" but I had explained I was cold, or there is discharge and they never checked me and turns out I have a thyroid problem and tho I had mentioned symptoms they said, "you weren't showing any symptoms " it made me so mad but there are only 2 other doctors in my area that have really bad reputations so I'm freaking out

I'm just over 23 weeks pregnant. I'm not sure if you can answer this ....I have a family history of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism (sister was hyperthyroidism for years went to hypothyroidism after radiation & grandma was hyperthyroidism) so I get tested quite a bit even when not pregnant because of family history. My first pregnancy my thyroid was fine. This pregnancy I had a normal TSH level of 1.59 around 10 weeks. I went to the lab in the afternoon(usually go late morning afternoon). Lately I have been having very low blood pressure (can go right down 80s/47or50s but seems to stay lately 90s/50s) with this pregnancy and light headness on and off only when laying down or sitting (which is weird cause low bp usually causes that with standing but I'm fine when I'm standing and walking around) so my health team said ok lets test your thyroid again even though it was normal in the beginning. This time I decided to go first thing in the morning at 7am because just worked out better that way for us that day. My TSH result was 4.4(normal is 0.3-4 but I think second trimester doctors want you max 3?) and my T4 was 11(normal 9-19). I saw my doctor yesterday and she said it is tiny bit high but they will retest before medication. They don't want to medicate unnecessarily and cause heart palpitations cause where I already get those...had them for years they increase with pregnancy especially if stressed.
I'm being retested Tuesday Jan 19 at around 9am (12 days after first test , is that to early to retest ? I have an appt for 7:40 am but I'll have to sit around for an hour where as I'm doing glucose test too ). I read somewhere that fasting and going early morning for a thyroid test could lead to false elevated TSH levels. Do you know if that's true ? Should I be going in the afternoon for TSH test like I had done before?
I also read 5 to 10 mcg a day of biotin in vitamins can give false results so I stopped my prenatal just incase figured no harm for a week.
I'm praying it's normal next week I'm terrified. I read to much on hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism during pregnancy and scary stuff about increase risk of preeclampsia and hemmrhage during birth. I'm not sure if it's even if your under control with meds or if it has to be out of hand for it to be dangerous?

It's too early for me to take a test, but I'm already panicking at the idea of a nurse or doctor telling me my due date based off of my last period and not ovulation date. It's a sensitive topic for me because I've seen nurses be confused when I told them don't know if my bleeding was period blood, and doctors TELLING me that I'm on my period when I'm clearly only spotting (ironically it was on a day of extraordinarily light spotting too). It doesn't seem like medical professionals give irregular periods the attention it deserves. I will be upset if the nurse asks for my last period (like they usually do whether or not I'm pregnant) and then tell me I'm due when they don't even have all the information. Take this cycle. My positive OPK came on days 36 and 37 of my cycle, and that's way better than last time, when it took about six months with incessant spotting. So I guess my question is: do nurses ask about the regularity of your cycle before determining due dates? I'm just super scared that I'd be put in an uncomfortable situation and feel the urge to snap.

Hope this experience went well for you and you didn’t have to get feisty with any providers. I have 36 days cycles so I don’t even ovulate until 2 weeks after the end of my period. Then I’ll have my next period 2w or more after that. So 4w between end of previous period and start of next. I am ready to GO TO BATTLE with whoever tells me I’m wrong. Because if they never adjust the due date, they’ll consider me overdue before I’m actually over due. I know dang well when I ovulated and when I did the dance so I can say with fairly good certainly when conception date was based on my body’s symptoms. Sadly, I can’t leave and go to a new provider if this doesn’t work out because there are only TWO offices in my town and the other office wasn’t good for gyn care (dismissive, not telling me my own medical details, rude, etc.).

I have a question related to regular health but could be related to pregnancy as well. Could an OB/GYN give a rescue inhaler prescription? I've had asthma for 6 to 8 years now, and my usual doctor insists on me going in to be retested to see if I still have asthma yearly. The test makes me light headed to the point of almost fainting, and I'd prefer to ask my OB/GYN if she could write the prescription as opposed to being herded through an appointment and ignored for an hour or two. Would it be a waste of time to ask?
(My Doctor runs a lot of expensive tests, you're with a nurse for all the work, alone for about an hour, and then he's in the room with you for a few seconds and rushes through your time with him so you don't get to ask much.)

I have never had to do a yearly test to make sure i still have asthma. I just tell the dr i have a history of asthma and i ask for an inhaler and some refills and thats it. 6-8 years is a pretty long time to have asthma and i dont think you need to take a test every year...its not like it will magically disappear one day. Could you make a video about having a midwife to support you in the process/birth, similar to how they're used in the UK and other parts of the world? I iknow in the UK it's very very common to have a midwife, you have regular appointments, they're with you during your labor and delivery, and they do some postnatal care. I don't know if we even have the opportunity for that in the US but if so I'd love to hear about it!

    • @Nurse_zabe

So there definitely are midwifery support just like the UK. In the US (depending on your state) we have both certified nurses midwives and practical midwives. CNM can function in the hospital, birth center or in a home birth setting. Practical midwives are in some birth centers and home births. But again, a lot of the rights of practicing midwives is regulated by the state, so every one is different. The midwifery care model is one that is truly amazing and patient-centered and great for low-risk patients (which a majority of people are!) I’d research what it looks like in your area!

PSA- you can still do your cat’s litter if they do not go outdoors, they will only carry the disease if they are eating small animals, which most indoor cats aren’t eating.

You most definitely can clean a litter box when you are pregnant 🙄 I have done it through all of my pregnancies... I also worked as a Vet tech while pregnant and never had an issue and my drs know I clean my litter box and have said it is perfectly fine as long as you wash your hands after! ALSO not all cats have Toxo.. so if your cat is inside only and never eats rodents or wild bird.. they wont get it and neither will the person cleaning the litter box!

Thank you 🙏🏼 this comment took so much stress from me. I have 3 cats and I love them 😍 there is no one coming to clean their box but mama lol and the thought of having to Re home my fur babies had me sick with worry , literally. Just thank you so much

@@gypsyjade7170 my husband was deployed my first pregnancy... so it was up to me to clean the box and there was no way in hell I was getting rid of my cat... I was also working as a vet tech and did up until I joined the Corps and when in I also cleaned the litter box as I lived alone and no one else was going to do it.. and again now I am cleaning the box and will not get rid of my Maine Coons.. just be smart about it! I joke with my drs that I don't eat cat shit sandwiches, so it's fine 😂 if you feel better wearing gloves.. wear gloves.. but you have to actually ingest the fecal matter of an infected cat in order to get it.. and 99% of house cats will never even be exposed to it! So love of your cats and don't stress!

Thanks for clearing things up, particularly with inside cats! Our kitties always ran wild and free and brought home many critters. I always got a blanket statement from OBs to avoid. 💗

It's one of those things if someone else can do it then it's best but if it's either you or it doesn't get done then you have no choice, just gotta be very careful about your hygiene.

i love this comment so much! indoors cats cant get toxo unless they are eating the wild rodents that are OUTDOORS. plus in order to get toxo you either need to EAT the cat's poop, or pick up the poop WITH your hand and then NOT wash your hand and then touch your face. Obviously most ppl have common sense but i think there is just a bit of fear mongering with toxo and that gives cats a very bad reputation. families will even get rid of their cats just to avoid toxo once mom falls pregnant. if you are careful and obviously hygienic there is no real concern.
