The $1850 Garmin MARQ Captain Ruined Other Smartwatches For Me

  • I'm gonna say this right up front: even if we were talking about the best smartwatch of 2020, nearly $2000 is too much to ask for any wearable. But in the nine months since I bought the Garmin MARQ Captain for review, I’ve covered twelve other smartwatches - and every. single. one. of those smartwatches would be better … if it had "a little Captain in it."
Here’s five features from the Garmin MARQ Captain - and the Garmin MARQ series as a whole - that I wish every other smartwatch or wearable tech gadget of 2020 would steal.

While I haven't seen anyone wearing a MARQ series watch, I would say 40 or 50% of Navy Pilots wear a Garmin Fenix series watch. In some commands, they are actually issued one. I know of at least one story where the crew used their Garmin watch to safely navigate and land their jet when they had a malfunction and lost all of their instruments in the cockpit. And don't get me wrong, most of us would love the MARQ or even the D2 series, but they are hundreds (or thousands) more than a Fenix and they only have one or two features that the Fenix doesn't.

I love the Marq series because it's the only watch series that truly offers mechanical high end watch quality with smartwatch technology and useful fitness/outdoor focused technology. But that blue jacket you had on was fire dude!

Agree with you on the "focus" aspect. I'm an actual race car driver, and I would (almost) never use a smartwatch as a lap timer. I have specialized gear for that.
What I DO like to do with my Garmin (Vivoactive 3) is sync my heart rate from the watch to the video and speed / yaw / etc. sensors in my Garmin Virb camera. It's neat to see my heart rate trend up as I get closer to passing the guy in front.

Every time I watch one of your Smartwatch reviews it makes me want to reconsider smartwatches, but when the video is over and the lust is over I remind myself that I don’t care about notifications, music on a watch, and that the watch will be obsolete in a few years. Still though, I love your videos keep up the good work.

I've got the garmin tactix charlie and the biggest selling points were the long 2-week battery life and the sapphire glass which really does stay scratch free. Sure some of the unique options are cool, but really its just nice to see little things like heart rate, calendar updates and phone messages, but I would surely have broken a "regular" smart watch by now with how much of a brute I am.

So it is just an expensive fenix 6x pro? Which costs 1/3 of the price?

Love the look Mr Mobile but I have a Galaxy watch with aluminum silver band curved fitting to the circular face with blue dial. Looks as sleek and hefty as your Garmin but with software amd screen improvement. Still the best overall smart watch on market.

Great review as usual. I would love to own one, but if I was about to spend almost $2,000 on a watch, I would rather get a Hamilton or Longines automatic and spend the rest on a Garmin Fenix 6. 😄 But I admit, I am not a target customer.
