White and black men in American society over the years have behaved like men. Domestic abuse is rampant in all communities, and the majority of the victims are women and children. Statistics bear that out. I am always amazed at the strength of women in general and did not see black men as the antagonists or bad people as a whole any more than any other character in the movie. As a white female and a victim of domestic abuse, I was hungry to see the strength of the female characters, but maybe because I had read the book, I saw what I wanted to see.
