As an auto transporter, I'm seeing my top tier dealers buy units that they would have never purchased before. This puts me in a tougher position to fully document damages before I load it at the auction. They are buying them from pictures and auction descriptions. I had a 2016 Audi A6 with 98k. Black - showed every scratch. That's alot of damage coding and pictures. And the front suspension was trashed. This dealer doesn't buy junk. Now they are buying junk.

The auto market correct needs two things to happen, supply of new cars being produced to greatly increase to match demand, and the flow of used cars in the market increase. The issue is there will always be a gap of missing cars for model years 2020 through 2022 due to the chip shortage, so for years to come there will be less used cars available because of the lack of new cars sold. I think the car market will take another 5yrs to adjust at minimum, and there will be a distinct gap of newer cars with lower miles, and older shitboxes that people held onto longer because they couldn't get a new car.

@@MaxSpeedMike Yeah and it's a shame because some dealers are raking people over the coals still capitalizing off their lack of knowledge. The people who are going to get hurt the most are the ones buying 3yr old car's with 50k miles for MSRP when new. In 3 years, they'll now have a 6yr old car with 100k miles and still owe 50% MSRP value on their loan when a 6yr old car should be about 25-30% of it's value, which means they're going to have to suck it up and pay it off, or roll that negative equity into a new car. I've seen people who are buying a 3yr old car like that and 6 months later getting offered 10k less for a trade in when retail is still about what they paid. Some dealers are making an absolute killing

Speaking on sneaky dealerships, I am 20 years old and I just saved up enough money to buy my dream car. I purchased a 2001 Mustang cobra with only 38,000 miles and two owners. The body and the interior were absolutely flawless. The dealership I went to was asking an extreme premium Price on the car but we ended up agreeing on $18,500 cash. The next day I received the car, drive it to work and back loved every second of it, as I get home I got a check engine light for a fuel cap. I had a really bad feeling that I had an evap leak. Shernoff I had a huge leak, I had engine oil dripping down the pan, I started to have misfiring in cylinder four and the engine started shaking pretty bad. It amazes me that even for about a $20,000 A FORD dealership didn’t even care to service it before I purchased it. I ended up calling the dealership back and told them to come pick up their car and they complied. A lesson to be learned is do not always trust a branded dealership to give you a good car. Make sure you have your car always inspected before purchased. I ended up getting all my money back and I ended up purchasing a 10th GEN Honda Civic SI which isn’t bad but still no cobra…
Ps the dealership was: Palm Bay Ford

100% this. The auctions are sale facilitators, they should be involved in the transaction as little as possible. I'm a Honda dealer tech who used to go to public auctions frequently for personal cars. I had to develop a routine to efficiently look through a car and be able to reasonably tell the condition in 2-3 minutes of looking. I imagine any frequent auction goer has one that suits them and the cars they look for. I of course mostly buy Hondas, but a good deal is a good deal, irrespective of what it's on.
I also bought a few sub-$500 cars with major issues to fix them. My last one was a 267k mile 2002 Subaru Outback H6 that I got for $325 that needed a timing chain. Drove real nice once sorted. I know most people won't bother with a car that has super high miles, but most of my cars over the years had at least 200k on them (including one of my 2 current cars, a 2006 Honda Accord V6 with 232k on it. I daily it with no diffculty) and I bought it specifically as a project. It was the first car I ever did a timing chain on, so I learned quite a bit from it.

Many new dealers are keeping older, higher mileage trade-ins, some with 1 or more minor but reportable accident records, especially if their own brand to make money from rather than wholesale them out. It is more likely they are dumping the really bad ones (need major body, mechanical work, are known trouble cars, expensive to fix) to auctions or have used only dealers they directly trade with. For sure new dealers, even some rental companies are fighting over repossessed vehicle, lemon manufacture buy outs, had a major reported but repaired crash willing to pay top dollar as need stuff on the lot. It also means many used only lots are getting really bad cars too often at auctions and try to sell them at top amounts or with 'pay here' financing scams. It is the worst of times to buy a new or used car.

And it needed new tires, the trunk was leaking, it needed a new valve cover gasket ($300), and it also had a broken clock spring ($700) that my former mechanic broke while doing other repairs and refused to fix. I had just dumped $2k into the car with my former mechanic so I just decided to trade it rather than dump more money into it since the trans was also starting to slip when it was cold.

The used car market is very tough and finding good stock of sellable vehicles is a mine field. Bob is absolutely right about all that he describes in this VinWiki piece. Particularly Bob's story about that 1990 Infiniti Q45 luxury car has a brand specific engine the VH41 (not a lot of those out there and the ones that are in Japan or Australia which means the price goes way up). Guys out there trying to make an honest living in this market of speculative inflation and careless people selling garbage at auctions and buyers that don't know anything about cars ("I'm gonna get a deal! tire kickers") bidding up the prices is very tough.

I use to buy a newer used car as my daily driver every few years - get something with lower mileage that is slightly newer. Really good used cars now are selling for more than the MSRP when the cars were new. I could sell my cars and "make money" (sell them above what I paid for them) but I cannot replace a car with a better car for a "reasonable" amount. For those with a tight budget, buying a good used car is now almost unaffordable. Regretfully this issue will continue until we see new cars again on car lots that can, after a couple years of use, be sold as good used cars. When will "normal" return? Maybe in a couple of years but I think it will be a "new normal" and not like what we have had in the past.

Working in a dealership here, I am the inventory administrator. Sad to see other business doing shady stuff to mask problem.
Here, if a car fail safety inspection, it goes to auction, period.
And yes we are selling trade in car that we would have send to auction before as price for used car are nuts and price for some POS are ridiculous.
People doing the KBB wanted retail value for car. I had a guy with a 2005 Camry, worst $2,500 that wanted more. And came back to brag that CarMax gave him $6,000 for it. well good for him.
CarMax and Carvna where offering ridiculous amount of money 6+ month ago, and the used car market price is going down, and they and some others guys, are gonna take a big hit when things will burst.
I hope things will go back to normal sort of, as it is not a good market for anyone.

The guy with the 2005 Camry is full of shit unless he actually showed you paperwork to prove it cause last year I ran my 2005 Camry through CarMax, Carvana and Vroom and the highest offer I got was $400. Mine had 148k miles so not really that high for the age. The car needed about $1k in mechanical work and $600~ in new tires and a local Toyota dealer only offered $700 even if I got the mechanical issues fixed, I went to another Toyota dealer out of town because they had a car for sale that I wanted and they offered $1,400 sight unseen just based on running the VIN and my description of the car. They listed the car on their site a few days later for $5,600 and it was gone the next day.

I’m having a lot of luck buying cars that needs bumpers painted, maybe a whole paint job, pdr work, etc. But they are lower mileage, clean carfax cars. It takes a little longer to get to market, but my margins are higher because there is less competition for the fixer uppers.

I ended up selling it for just a few hundred less than what i spent on it, so i basically got my money's worth driving it around the past few years. Latest I bought is a 98 rav4, salvaged out but only because it was a theft recovery. No real damage to it and the catalytic converter is still there, so i just needed a $25 key cut and will eventually need a new IAC valve. I look at the damage, look at the history, make a best guess at what the problems could be, and figure what it could end up costing me to fix. If you're not mechanically inclined then buying used or auction cars will get very expensive REAL QUICK.

Arbitration can be a joke and really fraud in many cases IMO. I’ve been a professional auto tech 20+ years so I know when a car was sold for a reason. Like a vehicle with a 3.6 Chrysler that has a misfire on cyl 2,4 or 6 you have a 99% chance it needs a cylinder head and the dealer selling it 100% knows that they would never send it to the auction because it needs a coil or injector but that’s never listed when the car is being sold at the auction. Because I have been a technician so long I knew what to stay away from but then what happens is I get cars with very odd issues that I know were traded in because of it. I had a cobalt that had what felt like torque converter shutter but only when cold so I didn’t feel it till the next day but arbitration was only one hour at this auction , I look at the transmission u could tell it was just rebuilt and obviously for this issue which ended up being a maf sensor that was reading what looked to be fine but was just lean enough at highway speed to unlock the converter because it didn’t have as much power from running slightly lean and it wasn’t lead enough and the data looked pretty good that’s why there was no codes. I had a Silverado that would randomly have no power it would last about 10 seconds, stall then start up fine and might not do it for 100 miles or 1 mile. Because it didn’t act up for more than 10 seconds at random it was super hard to diagnose and it drove fine from auction. Ended up being the front 02 sensors. One of my buddies seen me post pictures of the truck and he’s a technician at the dealer who sold the truck at auction. He told me how the customer had it at 5 different shops and then when he brought it to the dealer they only had it act up 2 times and the owner decided to trade it in but nothing was listed when I bought it. I bought a Subaru from one of the online auctions which I had great luck with this auction and when it was delivered the clutch was hon couldn’t drive the car. When I called they said clutches aren’t covered because they are a wear item. I said the car was cheap, red light because of the high mileage and noisy brakes and I could almost understand not covering a clutch after a week or even 50 miles put on a car but the car is sitting in the same spot it was dropped off at because it doesn’t move how do you say the brakes are noisy when the car doesn’t move? They wouldn’t do anything for me. I wasn’t mad because it was a cheap 500 car that my friend was buying and it’s always a risk with crap like that but to not list it doesn’t move? Come on.
