But or Rent - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - • Snow White And The Sev...
The Grimm fairy tale gets a Technicolor treatment in Disney's first animated feature. Jealous of Snow White's beauty, the wicked queen orders the murder of her innocent stepdaughter, but later discovers that Snow White is still alive and hiding in a cottage with seven friendly little miners. Disguising herself as a hag, the queen brings a poisoned apple to Snow White, who falls into a death-like sleep that can be broken only by a kiss from the prince.

This movie has no right being as good as it is at the age of 85! So many people thought that this was going to a a huge flop at the time of its production - before this film, nobody had even heard of a full-length animated movie before!
Walt had the last laugh - it made over $8 million worldwide in its initial release and jumpstarted the first golden age of Walt Disney Animation.
So glad you reacted to this!

Fun fact: Snow White is the youngest Disney princess, going at 14 years old in the film.
Growing up, my favorite scene was when she and the dwarfs were having that dance party. Now that I'm older, I love it even more because, for the first time in probably a long time, Snow White is being a kid and having fun.
For a probable majority of her life, Snow was made a servant in her own home just because her stepmother was jealous of her beauty. It wasn't even her fault! Instead of letting her play, make friends, and train her to be the next queen, she's made to wear rags and clean the castle top to bottom. Yet the young princess keeps a smile on her face and a song in her heart.
With the dwarfs, she can relax and have fun. She doesn't have to look over her shoulder in fear of the queen or worry about being punished. She can finally be a typical 14 year old girl and be a kid.

This movie made Walt Disney go bankrupt, twice. It was called “Disney’s folly,” because nobody believed that a full length, theatrical release cartoon would be popular. 31:10 was cut to the overlay due to time and budget restraints.
And Snow White lied about her age to get the part. She claimed to be younger, and was just outside the audition range. Luckily, Walt himself was listening in, and chose her voice personally.
If Snow White was based on a real life event, the poisoned apple had a plant-based poison (forgot the name, hemlock?), which the coal dust her miner friends carried home cured.
There is a little music thing known as the millennial whoop. Tons of songs during the turn of the century used this, leading to the name. It has a sing along part that has the lyrics alternate between the third and fifth notes of the chord. Both “I’m wishing” and “high ho” use this.

The Prince fell in love with her beautiful corpse and had her taken back to his castle. During transport, her glass coffin was dropped and the apple was dislodged, so she woke up.

I just have to gush about the forest scene, because not only is it terrifying in its own right, but there’s actually more meaning to it if you consider the context:
    1) Snow White (who’s the youngest Disney Princess at only 13 years old) just had a man pull a knife on her, and then tell her he was forced to do so by her *stepmother.* Even if she knew about her stepmother’s jealousy beforehand, no child is going to want to believe that a parental figure (even an ab*sive one) wants them dead.
    2) Despite being forced to live as a maid, she’s still a princess who’s (assumingely) never set foot outside the palace walls, and now she’s lost, alone, with *no* idea where to go or what to do, and mentally reeling from the horrible truth she just learned.
    3) She doesn’t start having the scary visions until *after* being scared twice (first by an owl, and then by a swarm of bats).
In conclusion: The forest is actually just a normal forest, and the scary imagery is a visual representation of how Snow White’s fear & trauma is distorting her perception of reality. The subtext in old Disney films (or at least this one) is *astounding.*

Snow White is my favorite Princess to this day! I think because while she lives in a magical world, she is just so normal/non-powered. All she has is an extraordinary beauty, and a loving heart to go with the skills she learned as a servant for the Queen...and she makes this work, caring for the Dwarves and becoming a loving, effective housekeeper for them. I use to try and love cleaning as a little girl to be more like Snow White...didn't take...but I respect the hell out of anyone who can clean and enjoy it!

Snow White was so sweet and kind but life treated her so poorly. But she never let the negativity get to her. Also, Snow White was a tough woman underneath that sweetness. She tells the Dwarfs off that they need to get their s**t together cuz their house is a pig pen. I can go on and on how much I love this film but that's as far as I can go.

Fun fact, Disney had an era of rotoscoping. They would trace over their prior animation, and use it in a new film.
The Silly Song dance, the Jungle Book’s _Be Like You_ dance, and the Acristocat _Everybody wants to be a cat_ were all rotoscoped into Robin Hood’s _Phony king of England._
Another rotoscope is the Jungle Book using/sharing Winnie the Pooh, Wind in the Willows, and Sword in the Stone.

That you thought Snow White's dance was like Motion Capture isn't completely untrue, because it was hard for the animators at the time to animate humans realistically, they filmed live action models and then they would trace the frames on paper, it's called Roto Scoping. With the dwarfs and the animals, they were animated by hand as they were more cariactures so they could get away with cartoonier animation compaired to Snow White, The Prince, The Queen and The Huntsman.
The reason The Prince has so little screen time is because he was the hardest to animate of all the humans as this was the first time they ever animated humans in a realistic fashion (up to this point they have mostly done Mickey Mouse and pals and the Silly Symphonies with some experimenting on the latter with human characters, the first attempt was Godess of Spring but the rubber hosey animation of the title character wasn't really that good and Disney thought they had a lot of work to do if they were going to get it right, they did succeed in a Cinderella-like ginger girl in The Cookie Carnival though not as realistic as Snow White but it was a good start). The Prince where meant to be captured and put in the dungeon to be mentally tortured by the queen before escaping. These ideas were recycled for Sleeping Beauty though.

Also, what you said about remakes is correct. Snow White and the Huntsman (Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron) is the movie you were talking about. It has a sequel which solely focuses on the Queen and the huntsman. There’s also Mirror Mirror with Julia Roberts and an old one called Snow White: The Fairest of Them All (it’s a bit dark but I think it’s pretty good). Disney is making a live action Snow White movie now. Of course the TV show Once Upon a Time is also good, literally revolves around Snow White and the Queen.

So, as Walt Disney's first animated feature film, he pulled out all of the stops and used every animation trick he had at the time. Snow White, the Prince, and the Evil Queen were all basically rotoscoped or just used real-life imagery to draw the characters, the dwarves and animals were all designed like his previous Silly Symphony cartoons (plus the Old Hag disguise and even the Hunter technically uses both rotoscoping and Silly Symphony designs), and the backgrounds were all painted to help make sure that the emotions of the scene were the driving force of the story (since the script was rather plain and safe comparatively to other films).

In the cut Soup Eating scene that happens directly after the Washing Song, the dwarfs are shown eat like slobs including loudly slurping. After awhile Snow White gets their attention and show them "how gentlemen eats" which they do but they still slurps loudly even if their eating habits improves. Dopey accidently slurps up his spoon and the others tries to get it out, which they eventually does by holding him down to the floor and kick him hard in his butt. The spoon, along with the soup he accidently swallowed in The Washing Song, flies out, gets pinned on the wall and the dwarfs cheers for their success.
The soup scene along with the bed making scene (which was only halfl completed animation-wise) were animated by Ward Kimball, one of "Disney's Nine Old Men", and cut for lenght and pacing reasons. Ward who worked so long and hard with those scenes consindered quitting but before he could do so Walt stopped him and said to him that he for the next movie, he would be the Supervising Animator for Jiminy Cricket for their next film Pinocchio.

With no way to finish, he had to go to the bank and beg for another loan in front of a board of executives. As an aid, he brought along fragments of the half-finished film, fragments which astounded the entire board. When finished, the Head Executive got to his feet and made what, for a business man at that time especially, constituted a tremendous leap of faith into the complete unknown:

Oh if you think the queen wanting snow white’s heart brought back to her in a box is dark, the original source material states that the queen wanted her liver and lungs so that she can eat them. Yeah, cannibalism was a thing in a lot of fairytales back then.

Way back then, being fair skinned in that area of the world was considered a good indicator of status. It meant you were likely a member of the aristocracy or royalty, since you didn't have to work in the fields. Today, tanned skin is often considered more advantageous from a beauty perspective, since you're less likely to look sallow or sickly with a darker complexion, but back then, the lighter your skin, the easier you could find an advantageous match, since you were automatically associated with those of higher rank.

A lot of the human characters were rotoscoped. Basically they had reference footage of the actors and drew over each frame to replicate the realistic movements. They actually used a lot of these in Fleischer Cartoons from the 20s and 30s.

It's funny because even if I knew the original tale, I saw the Disney movie only in the middle school.
My little sister is able to sing like Snow-White and our favorite part is when the Queen says to the crows " Have a bite ? "
If you think the movie is dark, tell yourself that the original tale is worse in particular the Queen death : she's invited to the wedding of Snow-White and the prince (without knowing it's her) and she recognize her. After, she's doomed to dance in white-hot metal shoes until she dies.
You can watch Bambi but prevent a lot of tissues

In the original fairy tale, all the dwarfs are the same and pretty featureless. Disney's brilliant idea was to give them all separate personalities. He couldn't decide on a voice for Dopey, which is why he doesn't talk (but apparent can, just doesn't).

Snow's always been a favorite of mine, and I hate that a lot of people dismiss her. She's just a young girl, and also looks very realistic in terms of her face and proportions. Unfortunately, following Ariel, Disney started designing all their princesses as stick-thin with big heads and bigger eyes lol (nothing against Ariel, she's super cute, but I hate that all future princesses have her proportions.)

Vultures are actually nice to have around. They clean up the dead critters before they can start to smell. We had a couple large dead fish wash up in our yard one summer, and the smell was just awful. It was this hot, awfully humid day, but those vultures descended in droves and within an hour the smell was gone!

There are other adaptions of the story of snow White, the original fairytale. I highly recommend you check them out. Three of them for examples are Snow White and the Huntsman, which is like a horror thriller action film. Mirror mirror a romantic comedy with Julia Roberts as the evil queen. And Sydney white, a modern retelling of the story. Also highly recommend that after you watch like all the classic Disney films you should check out Disney Channel the descendants trilogy; it answers the question of what would it be like if Disney heroes and villains lived in modern day and had kids. Also the evil queen name is Grimhilde.

In the pre-Industrial world, most labor was agricultural - it took roughly 95 people to farm enough to feed 100 people, and being outside meant you got tanned. Laborers who didn't even rate wearing a collar got a "red neck." Victorian (caucasian) upper class women wanted a "peaches and cream" complexion as a sign they were of the leisure class. They typically carried small umbrellas to protect them from the sun - "parasols" which literally means without the sun(sol). (In Gone With The Wind, Scarlett O'Hara is told to stay out of the sun as it would give her freckles, and she was treated with buttermilk as a remedy - although I doubt that did much good.)
I believe in India, the caste system favors the lighter-skinned peoples.
As a side-note - Throughout history, you see upper crust adopt fashions that very much restricted movement, again as a sign you were well off - like the Elizabethan ruff collar and the elaborate towering powered-wig creations of the French in the 1700's.
The Industrial Revolution radically decreased the manual labor of farming, while the rise of the factory system, particularly the invention of the typewriter, created a labor force clerks and typists, all indoors. At the same time in the early 20th century, the beginning of movies required bright rainless days, so movie companies and the cultural heart of the country shifted to Hollywood. NOW the sign of excess leisure was the ability to lounge around a swimming pool or at the beach. Hence a 180 degree shift in fashion.

In the original story. The evil queen was not killed by being squashed by a boulder. Instead during Snow White and Prince Charming's wedding the evil queen had to dance on a giant grill in 200 degree ferinheight iron boots till she dropped dead. Disney rewrote the evil queen's death because they figured the evil queen's original death would have been too dark for a kids movie.

Neil Gaimen has done an excellent re working of this tale based on the Grimm fairytale that this film is based off, where the starting point was he thought what kind of girl could survive in a glass coffin for years and what kind of man would find a girl in a coffin attractive, so we get a vampire snow white and a necrophile prince with a sympathetic queen character!!

Mining is an extremely dangerous occupation - including cramped bores and the dangers of inhaling things like coal dust, the risk of explosions from methane built-up, and the collapse of tunnels. Strip mining wrecks the environment but is far less dangerous to the individual workers, even it destroys the land.
