I love how this movie deals with several concepts:
    Stranger danger.
    Actions have consequences.
There’s really no such thing as ‘free’.
Being good is better then being bad, so listen to your parents.
And also to listen to your conscious.
The boys were offered a ‘free’ day of doing whatever they wanted and were encouraged to misbehave in the worst way. Smashing/breaking property, eating junk food without limitations, smoking, drinking alcohol, gambling, etc.
They literally made jackasses of themselves so that’s exactly what they turned into.
Also note, the reason Pinocchio stopped transforming is because he left the island.
Had he stayed any longer, he would have fully transformed.

Fun fact the OG Author of the Pinocchio book *DID NOT* like kids one bit. And he let them know it through his writings. The book originally ended with Pinocchio getting lynched and strung up by the cat and fox after robbing him of any money he had on him but audiences weren't satisfied with such a morbid and frankly depressing ending and requested that the author continue and make Pinocchio into a real boy. Which he did but Pinocchio went through many more trials and tribulations in order to get there.

Since little boys are more prone for misbehaving and are more easily fooled compaired to girls and teenagers, they're the best target for The Coachman and his men. It's not just beer and smoking cigarrs that transforms the boys into donkeys but all the bad behavor they do (fighting, staying up all night, breaking windows, ruining art etc.) and once the curse sets in you got limited time to get out of there before you'll get transformed into donkeys forever.

Walt Disney’s Pinocchio is such a timeless and charming animated film. It’s very cool to know that the beautiful main song of this film(“When You Wish Upon a Star”) serves as the anthem of Disney, that’s very special. The story does go into some dark themes but at least this film doesn’t go too deep like the actual story does.

This was only the SECOND full-length animated feature that the Disney Studios made (following Snow White), and it's astonishingly great, might as well call it a masterpiece. (In my own list of Disney top favorites, it goes alongside Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, and Tangled.) They had mastered animation technique and story structure, and as you say it still holds up. It also remains legitimately scary, even now.
That "morning" sequence, with the village waking up and the children going off to school, used their new "multiplane" technology to give depth to the image, and was so expensive that Walt had to warn animators not to get so ambitious in every scene. Fortunately, it proved a great success, as well as providing Disney with the theme song that they still use, "When You Wish Upon a Star."

It's such a wonderful movie. Pinocchio being a naive boy, who gets into trouble for not listening to his conscience. Going to a puppet show instead of school, lying, indulging in alcohol, cigarettes, gambling all leading to consequences until he does what is right and returns home and saves his father 😊
The best part is that he doesn't do bad things because he is left with no choice but because he just doesn't listen to his moral compass. He is not in the puppet show because school rejected him, he doesn't get out of the cage by lying, he doesn't go to the island unwillingly and gladly partakes in bad things by abandoning his conscience.

@@lukehannah4554 Walt Disney did not put religious stuff into films unless it was a direct part of the lore on which the story was based as it could threaten his image. And he was right, the original Disney films were made for everyone and by not including religion, politics or idealism in his films he could focus on agenda-free fairy stories. Contrast that with the woke trash Disney makes today and you can see why classic Disney films remain so popular - they don't conform to extreme conservative or liberal standards, they're just beautifully made animations for all the family and are loved around the world. And that's because Walt Disney was a very balanced guy who knew how to accept conservative and liberal ideas and maintain an unbiased approach to making animations that would not target, favour or offend people on either side. Because he knew that children are not meant to be groomed into taking sides by media corporations on behalf of meddling politicians. Modern Disney has forgotten that practice, it is run by corruptible management who continually influence and harm their productions with divisive ideals.

I tend to like Remakes that improve the villain or villain dynamic. LA Pinocchio is barely better with Coachman and the same with Honest John, Stromboli is the same and improved through association. Hence, I rate it below par for updates like Lady and the Tramp or The Lion King.

5:37 Geppetto is voiced by a German actor, so I'm pretty sure his accent is German. That, along with the overall Germanic aesthetic of the film despite its Italian setting, has led fans to theorise that it's set in South Tyrol, a state of Italy that historically belonged to Austria, and is home to ethnic Austrians that speak German as their native tongue.

8:15 I think what you’re thinking of is rotoscoping. One of the first movies to do that is the animated Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies from the 70s. They’re interesting movies for sure. Other movies like this are Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice, and Wizards, used full rotoscope for a majority of their characters but many many movies use rotoscope. Alice in Alice in Wonderland, little Anne Marie and the other human characters in All Dogs Go To Heaven, the human background characters in An American Tail, the Black Cauldron, Cinderella, even The Little Mermaid and so many more

This movie was reference-parodied in RWBY.
In the original story, Pinocchio was a brat, and that’s why he needed Jiminy Cricket. He even called Gepetto a mean nickname, since his hair looked like corn mush, or Polendina in Italian. He was given a proper soul by a woman in blue, has a tell when he lies, and had to save his loved ones from a giant monstrous whale before becoming a real boy.

Here's what I didn't know that I found out recently. It seems that Pinocchio story started out in Italy even though Geppetto in this movie is German… I think, but Stromboli and everything else seems to be Italian minus the coachman, of course, as well as the Fox and cat.
You're wrong actually, the Coachmens plan is much more sinister than you think. in the original book or rather Italy back in those times they say that the donkey is stupid because they don't learn anything they don't want to learn due to their stubbornness and that the only thing they're good for is hard-working labor, so if a person or child grows up or becomes a jack ass, they have to work like a jack ass which is why a lot of parents want their children to go to school, so they can make true, honest, living without working so hard, or even worse work themselves to death. Pinocchio brings that lesson to light in a dark tone, the coachman allows the boys to become like jackasses all that stuff isn't for free on pleasure island. It costs a lot of money so as the boys keep on playing and doing whatever they want they begin to turn into jackasses literally, and are sold to circuses salt mines and whoever needs them just to pay off all the stuff on pleasure island, and those that can still talk… No one knows what happens to them, It's safe to say that the donkeys carrying the coach were once boys, and are now permanent slaves to the coachman himself.

The jackass transformation scares me so much as a kid, and it gave me nightmares 😳. Today, as an adult, I do ignore that part, turning the volume down and listening to my favorite Elton John song I'm Still Standing. That song makes me happy, and it's helped me through my time during Covid-19, and it gave me the courage to get back up on my feet and go back to work wearing a mask faithfully. 😷 Soon, I got my new dog 🐕 at the start of Covid-19, and I was happy that I ever was when my old dog was still alive. Now I have three dogs, and that's been much sweeter. Just say I found my happy thought after so many sad ones.

The reason the live action version is so hated is because it goes back on the original moral of the story. Instead of learning valuable lessons to survive, Pinocchio still lies and gets away with all his wrongdoings. It changed too much of the animated version, in a way to modernize it. And because of that, it forgot that it was supposed to be just like the animated version in all ways, especially morals.

    • @HaraQuinn

exactly.. there's been a whole genre of people created called "movie/book purists" due to all these timeless movies/books (rings of power) being remade with such little respect to it's changed characters, lessons, and original lore. (albeit i understand many of these tales actually originated themselves from darker themed endings.. ie the Grimms all the way to Hans Christian Anderson. Regardless, Disney made the fairytales known worldwide, and should be respected and left alone.. I guess there's a bit of a movie/book purist in me too.. i cringe everytime i hear there's going to be a new remake.
The only exceptions that i've found to enjoy are newly created prequels like Maleficient or Wicked. I highly recommend the author of Wicked, Gregory Maguire, who made an amazing Wicked Trilogy.. i believe the play only covers one book, but the other two are also fascinating. But those are brand new created prequels to play with ones mind and changing perceptions to humanise known villains by going into "why".
I grew up reading so many of them, "Confession's of an Ugly Step Sister" being a fantastic retelling of Cinderella from one of the step sister's pov. The author doesn't change the stories as to swap the roles of the characters, changing the original stories, but he just gives an alternative cool perspective of "what if".. Few notable ones, "Mirror Mirror" was revamped from Snow White to fit more into actual history of the Borgia family in Italy.. more specifically Lucrezia Borgia as the Evil Queen. She was a noble who was passed through many failed arranged marriages from a very young age for political greed by her family. She was eventually, iirc, questioned about her various various, wealthy dead husbands and accused of witchcraft and using poisons (kindof fitting story if you imagine the Evil Queen's upbringing and why she was a lone, bitter Queen in Snow White, projecting her hatred seeing how hopeful and happy Snow White always appeared to be.. only to later using a poisoned apple). Sorry for going on a tangent, but i agree with you and how shallow these retellings of some incredible stories to teach life lessons etc have been watered down for this new generation.

That timing actually really hurt this one at the box office, thanks to no European market because of the war this movie almost killed Disney. The success of the much more cheaply made Dumbo saved them, just a few weeks before Pearl Harbor happened. Like I said, Pinocchio is the only remake I really have no problems with. The next closest one is Aladdin, and the last one I felt mildly positive about was The Jungle Book. In both Aladin and the Mowgli, I didn't care for either the lead performance or the direction, and the songs mostly fell short of the original.
Pinocchio didn't feel like it lost something in the translation, it didn't feel less energetic than the animated one. I liked Zemeckis' choices, I like all the characters better here, if ever so slightly.
Here's the only thing I didn't like in the remake: Stromboli.
In the new one, from the first frame you see him there's no doubt he's a trash human. I much prefer his character in the animation. He's loud and big, but we're not sure if he's cool or not. He hangs out with Pinocchio a little, has that little sit down with him, eating, talking shop, and only after Pinocchio says he leaving does Stromboli turn and cage him, and I like that sudden shift. In the remake there's no build up, no surprise. He breaks up the scene with the ballerina, and immediately jails the kid. No twist, no turn.

04:25 - 04:27 Fun fact:in the Disney movie he's made alive by the Blue Fairy, but in the original book he was _already_ alive when he was just a rough piece of wood. No explanation whatsoever. He just was.🤷‍♂
    06:11 - 06:19 Figaro is a boy,Cleo is a girl.
11:43 - 12:03 In the book there's a scene where Pinocchio falls asleep in front of a fire and wakes up with his feet burned and Geppetto must re-build them.😬🔥
12:33 - 12:42 Bold of you to assume he's _actually_ going to school.🤭
13:32 That misplaced accent bothers me everytime:it's supposed to be Stròmboli, not Strombòli!😖And BTW his original name is much cooler:he's called Mangiafuoco in Italian which literally means Fire-eater!(Mangia=he eats Fuoco=fire)🔥On the other hand,Disney's cartoon gave names to a bunch of nameless characters from the book...in the book the Cat&the Fox are just..the Cat&the Fox,the Cricket is the Talking Cricket and the whale has no name and it's not even a whale,it's a shark.
15:14 - 15:20 Speaking about smashing Jiminy...another difference from the book:in the book, when Pinocchio first meets the Cricket he starts lecturing him,Pinocchio gets annoyed and he smashes him against the wall, killing him!😱The Cricket was *never* a main character:he was killed off right away!!
19:15 - 19:17 I watched the Disney cartoon long before I learned about the original story,so I was shocked to learn that in the book Fire-eater is not actually _that_ bad...he gets moved when Pinocchio tells him about his father and he even _gives_ Pinocchio money...but then he gets tricked by the Cat&the Fox again and loses it.😓
24:47 - 24:49 Well,to sum it up...the story is supposed to be about Pinocchio going from a naughty boy to a good boy...but the live action Pinocchio is already *a SAINT* from the beginning...he does nothing wrong and when he does it's never his fault! You'll see...
30:40 - 30:44 And in the book Pinocchio at one point meets Donkey Lampwick again while he's been working for a while and he dies for too much labour.😢💔

The thing is about donkeys they get bad reputation for being “stubborn” from ancient times of traveling merchants get so impatiently frustrated with their donkeys stop for some reasons and to the Italians donkeys are “symbols of stupidity” in fact the original 1940 animated Pinocchio often shown but mostly undisciplined, irresponsible, misbehaving little boys who don’t want follow the rules society and not following their parents wishes sometimes. In the 1940 film, Pleasure Island is bullies paradise where are they inappropriate things against their parents’ wills such as underage drinking beer, smoke cigars, and chaotic things like fighting and picking on others and once their “fun” is now paid for and ended up in crates to be sold off to the salt mine and sold to the circus. But in the original Pinocchio story Pinoc is a bit of a jerk and the sea monster is a giant terrible dogfish (smaller looking shark). Well anyway, donkeys are quite patient animals but they don’t see eye to eye with dogs and now served as livestock guardians that saved goats and sheep farmers money. And also the 1997 Pinocchio has a good fate ending to the boys if you are interested to watch it on you next reaction. Back in the day when its released to theaters it flopped to the fact it’s lost it European market due Hitler doing terrible things.

I busted a gut laughing at that, half my family looked at me funny, and the other half took a few seconds to smile. I then got them all to laugh with my Tiki Room José impression: “I wonder what happened to Rosita.”

BOY, Instead of Hollywood pointlessly “remaking” all these Disney Classics (ie. fixing what isn't broken)…. what about dedicating the time, money, energy, & effort to make the rest of the NARNIA books into movies? Or the ERAGON series into proper movies? 😮❓📚

I know that some puppets can be creepy too, but Pinocchio is a puppet of a different color.
