It was 1987, I was 13 years old living in North Carolina, I lived about 30 miles from Pope air force base. I was riding my bike about 3 miles from home on an old farm land road, when a f4 phantom flying the lowest I had ever seen, banking hard left, flew right over me, he was so low the pilot gave me a thumbs up, I will never forget that day, the sheer awesomeness and sound of it all, love the phantom

And the Japanese do not mince their words either, when it comes to Phantoms - They allow, they ENCOURAGE these Airplanes to Fly with a very clear Message: Phantoms Forever.
It does not get much solid, clear, straight than that. What a sign of appreciation!

What a wonderful upload! This tribute to the maintainers is well deserved. The aircrew receives the glamour and rightfully so, but it's the maintainers that give them the good jets to fly.
I remember my days as a maintainer on F-14 Tomcats, first with the VF-101 Grim Reapers where I was trained, and then with the VF-142 Ghostriders, where I started on the flight line before working in several different repair shops. I remember crawling down the jet intakes to do inspections. Replacing instruments and displays in both the front and rear cockpits. Riding brakes or driving the tow tugs. Opening panels and replacing boxes. Working for, and with, some of the finest men I have ever had the privilege of serving with.
I'm much older now and those fond memories give me a great deal of pride and comfort. A smile is on my face as I watch this.
    Arrigato.

@@oldgoat142 The craziest maintenance stories I've ever heard come from Tomcat wrenchers. You ever hear about a Tomcat with no wheel brake pressure being backed onto an elevator from the hangar deck in rolling seas, only to get too much momentum and hit the lip of the elevator, pop its nose up, then fall backwards into the ocean? Guy told me about that happening as he watched in awe/horror, plane captain and tow cart driver jumped out before they went with it. It was a TARPS bird too, the plane with the fewest problems in the squadron.

    • @oldgoat142
      @oldgoat142 Před 3 lety

@@LRRPFco52 Oh yeah. I've always enjoyed swapping sea stories with guys from other units. I've seen my fair share of weird things, or was told from others.
Had a similar incident happen in my squadron while we were at sea. It was a nasty, stormy night and the ship was rolling pretty good for a carrier, (if you don't think 100,000 tons of steel can't roll around, guess again). They were doing a flight deck re-spot and as one of the tug guys was trying to reposition one of our jets the ship took a big roll and now the guy's trying to push a near 30-ton aircraft uphill on a slick deck. The tow bar snapped and the PC jump out of the cockpit and about killed himself. The jet and tug stayed on the deck but banged the crap out of a couple of other jets and one of the main landing gears got hung up on the catwalk.
Needless to say, it was just a little bit hairy.

@@echodelta2172 ; Wrong, for 07-8436, 0 is the last digit of the year of delivery (which is also updated on total rebuilds, thus tail numbers change), the 7 is a type class prefix (F-4 or KC-767), 8 indicates an all weather fighter (6 is used for the RF-4 recon) and finally 436 is the actual local serial number of the jet (which doesn't change). The Japanese system thus isn't as simple as the date coded system of the USAF.

The Phantom was the first model plane I ever built when I was a kid. I chose her for her brutal beauty.

The F4 is still a viable platform. Not sure how many years are left in the airframes thought. The F4 is still very fast, maneuverable enough, and carry alot of ordnance. It's kind of like the Dad of the F15X.

The F4 is the only plane that looks and sounds absolutely brutal sitting still. Watching one go full afterburner at low altitude is a life changing experience.
Long live the F4; the grumpy, angry old man of planes.

Your composition is fantastic! The shot of the 3 phantoms lining up for take off, all giving max pitch up deflection on the elevators made me smile. I now want to build a 1/48 scale model of the blue Phantom Forever bird... It's like it has a personality now.

@@Jpriest13 I know, right? Phantoms are beautiful, and it makes me happy to see that the JASDF takes care of them so well.
@1-300 Do you ever see the JASDF Phantoms train with live ordinance, or is it all just inert training weapons? In your videos I normally see clean aircraft (except fuel tanks) and maybe a blue inert AAM-3.

Hi all!!!!!! from Argentina!!!!!! Bravo for Japan, remastering the phantons, the same we could do with the mirages or the skyhaws, how much we lack to have in principle so much initiative and self-esteem. at least we would have to be good copiers if we don't know how to create. until forever !!!!!!

Those wing down fly bys that captures the aircraft in such a perfect angle are spectacular. All obviously in great definition where you see all the detail. Also like to comment on how pristine the aircraft are and the efficiency of the crew.Typical of anything in japan, do it right, do it better and do it perfect

Working on UK F4 J UK phantoms at St Athan. a phantom was on the detuner " silencer" one day and sat engine at idle with no problems; then at mil thrust the exhaust plume from the back had somthing bobbing up and down... on reheat all of a sudden I saw this large medicine ball on fire thrown upwards about fifty feet in the air spinning and spilling wildly it was one of very many unique and funny moments in a RAF career... happy days LOLx
