Hot take: I would have liked to have seen a third option for an expression of a mixed opinion.
Another Idea I’ve had: The site should allow for more detailed filtered searches (I’d suggest the ability to search by percentage and range of physical number of likes, dislikes or mixed opinions, range of view count, a range of dates of upload, if it is monetized or not, if it was ever on trending and if so where did it peak and when, and by range of the channels subscriber count)

It’s funny cause of course they’ve always known they’re popular but they usually just talk about it in passing. Actually talking about it now got to him😭
Getting 5 mil views on 7 mil subscribers is pretty insane by current standards. It's incredibly rare nowadays for subscriber count to directly translate to views. Smosh has 26 mil subscribers now, and 5 mil is still a better performing video. Pewdiepie has over 100 mil subs, but a fraction of that in views.

2013 was definitely the last time that CZcams was under one community umbrella and then 2014 was the transitional year where everyone started to branch off into niches. Between 2014 and 2016 I mainly stuck to the Let’s Play community with Game Grumps, Markiplier, Jackscepticeye, and a lot of the more niche gaming channels.

I feel like Ian and Anthony don’t give themselves enough credit pioneering CZcams! Like the fact that they had Lunchtime with Smosh and Mail Time with Smosh which is literally modern CZcams today just mukbangs and creating super editing content of just hanging out with your friends. It’s so entertaining! And they pioneered it! I feel like if they did just vlog style stuff of them trying out food and going on target buying sprees it would completely FILL MY FANGIRL HEART. Like seeing Ian and Anthony just hanging out as best friends like they did back in the day would be crazy! And a lot of the new stuff today is just that. Plus Podcasts, drama channels, and etc. Keep the sketch comedy obviously but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BRING BACK LUNCHTIME WITH SMOSH

The sense of community and everyone coming up together was definitely CZcams wide, viewers included. You’d reference/quote a video IRL and an excited stranger would come up to you and share their own favourite lines.

I had a friend who I showed “the haunting” which is still my favorite old smosh video, and she and I would act out the scenes at each other from across the room during class 😂
My litmus test for friends back in school was often if they’d laugh at a weird ass CZcams video or get a reference. Charlie the fucking unicorn was my vibe check 😅 but hey it did work in directing me to some of my favorite people. Now we ask what podcasts or streams we’re all watching lol

Early CZcams reminds me of the good times crowding around an iPod touch with all your friends. CZcams being smaller and having the community of peers at school made the experience of sharing videos with people in person something that we'll sadly never feel again. I'd say peak CZcams was 2012 for me.

I really hope this series never stops. I've been watching CZcams since before Smosh and I love the nostalgia.
I personally feel most/best connected to the yt era of 2008-2011 but I can't pinpoint why. I, too, feel like 2013 was kinda the beginning of the end for "yt innocence" or fandom culture as we knew it generally, it then being really truly changed (and partly horribly so) in 2015/2016.
I think for me 2012-13 was around when I started watching CZcams (I was around 10 years old) so it has a special place in my heart

I miss CZcams and just the internet as a whole back then, it was more wild west and a detachments from The real world, now it feels like the internet is an extension of the real world, which honestly doesn't make room for a lot of escapism, I just also hate how there's a lot of negativity due to CZcams and the internet, people use Fame as a jumping off point to be a jerk to people that they they see on the street. Harassment has become content which is just devastating

51:55 Very random but not that random story. When I was about 9 years old (in 2013 funnily enough), the kids on my cul de sac were a big community and everyone would hang out. I was playing with a neighbours toddler and lifted her over my head and accidentally fell back on my ass and was extremely lucky to land with my head right where the curb dropped and neither of us had a scratch on us. Didn't stop me from crying and feeling overwhelmed with guilt.

And if you ask me, the golden age of CZcams was around 2008-2017, though it has seen a recovery in recent years, especially with Minecraft making a comeback in 2019 and you guys reuniting last year.

I feel like majority of people my age (22) had the same exposure to CZcams as I did. I was probably aware of CZcams around 2010. Occasionally going on it, but never doing much in depth stuff. It wasn’t until 2012/2013 that I feel like a lot people jumped on board and became consistent viewers on the platform. As I remember always watching Smosh, Vanossgaming, and RayWilliamJohnson, Ryan Higa, etc. pretty crazy to see how different the platform is now and how a lot of creators have either dipped, been arrested/canceled, or moved onto bigger things from the platform. I feel like 2012/2013 was the Big Bang for CZcams gathering such a massive audience and being taken seriously. As meme culture became very relevant as well, the internet was becoming a breeding ground.
Now that Ian and Anthony are back together we need a new rewind for old times sake
I like watching you guys contemplating different aspects about ur experience, and I think that’s what makes this channel real
