Today’s case is about the infamous Black Dahlia murder in 1940s Los Angeles. 22 year old Elizabeth Short was found dead and dismembered, in a case that has left detectives stumped for over 75 years. Since the murder, there have been multiple suspects - but to this day, nobody has been convicted.

Completely heartless how the journalists knowing what they knew, had the nerve to call her mother and pretend her daughter had won a beauty pagent just to get info on a deceased young woman. Poor mum. 😢💔
I hope they looked into him too !!
Seriously, the journalist is as sick as the killer, IMO. Maybe not violent, but just as sick. Who tf does that??!!! That’s emotional and psychological torture, all for the sake of their own self-promotion. Only a psychopath could do something so cruel.
Right!!!
Heck, many so-called journalists are no better these days.
@@conniccom Exactly. One moment you think your daughter won a pageant, the next you realize it's journalists who wanted to get information of your daughter who died tragically. That is such a change in emotion.
It’s hard to believe a murder with such unusual details is not the work of a serial killer. What kind of person would kill someone in such a specific and strange way and never kill anyone else ever again?
that just seems so hard to believe when you think about it
So true. Or that they have never done it before...
Agreed. Maybe this is just the only case in which the killer used this particular MO … maybe it was like their “greatest work” or something gross like that, but I also find it difficult to believe that this murder was the killer’s only murder … also, the precision in this case, makes me feel like the killer was experimenting, so maybe he experimented with different ways to kill, and other cases weren’t as violent, or just weren’t found and/ or didn’t receive the press bc they weren’t as creepy or staged. 🤷🏼♀️ but it does seem odd for a one time killer.
the main suspect at the time (IDK why no one talks about him nowadays) was suspected to have killed a little girl, cutting her and shoving the pieces in a gully. He worked in a morgue, so he knew how tu cut a body, and drain blood, and cleaning all up after. he was also a wannabe pimp, so he was constantly around in bars and clubs looking for young women that "wanted to be famous". Her tattoo was indeed cut and inserted in her v*gina, as well as her pubic hairs were cut and inserted in the anus. This and many more details no one want to repeat are in the very well written book by Piu Eatwell, she made a very detailed and accurate work of research, pity so little youtubers are willing to read it, but you can... and free your mind from all the garbage many have interest to tell about their fathers, artworks, doctors and so on.
Very interesting changes my thoughts on the case.
That’s interesting that the mom had a “switcharoo” happen to her twice… first the dad pretends he’s dead but it turns out he’s alive. Then she hears her daughter is alive but it turns out she’s dead. That’s a really strange thing to have happened twice in someone’s lifetime. Both circumstances I’m sure were awful.
That poor woman’s mental health must have been all over the place
yeah i was thinking about this, it's quite heartbreaking tbh
I can't even imagine how awful it would be to think your daughter's alive and well just to find out they were killed...
Another part of this case that makes me sick is when you just google Elizabeth Short or the Black Dahlia, so many people in Halloween costumes of her come up. As if a real woman who tragically lost her life is a character to costume who probably still has close relatives alive.
80 years is long enough i'd say
Sickening even so called art work of her post mortem photo and I even came across someone with a tattoo of her post mortem photo like wth is wrong with some people
@@lurjiit’s still gross to dress up as someone who was murdered, regardless of whether her relatives are alive or dead
I second this, when googling the case, I saw pin badges of a cartoon of her cut in half come up on Etsy??? so disgusting
@@sarah-lh5boi just saw that
it’s so sickening how people can buy that
You did a great job humanizing Elizabeth. She was and will always be so much more than the Black Dahlia.
@@RoseyVampdidnt even think of this :( thats awful
Yes, absolutely! I love how Eleanor humanizes and appreciates the people who were victims of the case before she goes into the gruesome details of the murder. Sometimes it’s hard to separate the person from the murder, but Eleanor makes it so easy. A great example of this from Eleanor I think is the murder or Dorothy Stratton (the murder of a playboy bunny) she just tells us how lovely and wonderful she was during her life. Props to Eleanor
Oh wow, that journalist that called her mother should be charged with something. There should be some laws to protect people from vultures like that.
Theres laws now obviously just didnt come soon enough
Intentional infliction of emotional distress
It was George Hodel 100 percent! Also, another interesting bit to consider: Hodel was a massive fan of visual artist, Man Ray, who took a photo of a human torso with the arms raised in the same manner as Elizabeth Short’s body was found. The photo is called “Minotaur.”
jesus, i just looked up that image and you can really see the resemblance to Dahlia
He had other works of women that were dismembered also. It had to have been him. The resemblance is uncanny.
His daughter said it was him.
Oh, so you were there?
We can’t possibly know 100%
When you were describing Red, I thought to myself "well does he have a history of being violent? Nobody commits such a gorey crime out of nowhere" then you went into the doctors story and it ticked every box including the horrible history. I believe that theory the most. Especially when you mentioned the bit about his secretary dying and possibly having known something. Makes perfect sense to me. Either way, RIP Elizabeth. You didn't deserve that.
I believe it was the doctor. Since the first time I heard his name, he's been my front runner. Truly evil man. Thanks for all the hard work you put into these cases.
He son also believed his dad did this.
@@sarabear2455his son believing it is one of the main reasons I believe it was him (combined with the medical knowledge, obviously).
Exactly!
I agree esp considering the way she was found.
Ghost adventures went to his mansion and investigated it. I definitely think it was the Dr. just never had enough proof that it was him.
eleanor tells these crime cases so well, she makes me believe as if she was a detective working on the case.
This! Shes amazing at explaining it and also having her personality show at the same time. Been watching her for around 5 years she never disappoints
i watched all her vids multiple times shes amazing
No. She doesn't. 😂
@@hjayy.
Well, two and a half million people think so, soooo there’s that 🤷♀️
IRL Batgirl + Really pretty = Elenor Neale
There were over 50 false confessions which makes me wonder if some of these people confessing were paid to do so by the actual murderer. It was a hard time financially, and if the murderer was well-off financially, he could have easily paid to lead the police on for extended periods of time.
Like if they were a rich doctor…👀
I don't believe that, BUT I do love your theory. I've never thought of it, and it is definitely interesting. My reason for not actually believing it is because I believe there would be at least one person that would have come forward. To be fair, I didn't live during the Great Depression/WWII Era, so I don't know how I would have reacted if I was offered a pretty penny to falsely confess to something I clearly hadn't. Maybe I'd be desperate to put a meal on the table for my family, desperate enough to confess. Who truly knows? Interesting theory. 10/10 theory.
@@MelissaLawrence2002 i thought that too, but also i would be scared of coming forward because it's likely they were also threatened by the culprit
@@atinyofficial that is true...hmm. Interesting. I wonder what threat would work? Like maybe some serious blackmail?
The killer murdered a person, he can do it again. Especially if he did have money. Although that means there probably also was blackmail/coercion involved in some way another even if the threat was on the callers life itself @@MelissaLawrence2002
The way this person toyed with police reminds me of the Zodiac killer, to this day, still not found..
Gives me chills. Thank you Eleanor
but they did find the zodiac killer didn't they? only a couple of years ago
@tetratheworm nope, that was a false report. To this day, cipher decoders are still trying to crack the case of the zodiac killer from his clues
@@wormofalltimethat's the NY Zodiac Killer
That similarity to the Zodiac Killer could very well be the reason that George Hodel's son thought he was also the Zodiac Killer. I believe it was George Hodel, but his son definitely was begining to loose touch with reality when he came up with those other ideas. I think the drive to prove his father did it played a part in him loosing touch with reality.
Obsession can do that unfortunately 😕. Reminds me of black phone where a character is figuring out who the killer is but none of their info is believed because they're an addict 😑 it sucks
HOW tf could anyone do that to someone?! Lifted her mom all up and made her extremely happy, then in the next second, crushed her entire world! Omgah, I hate this world 😞 that poor woman clearly went through absolute hell, with what was done to her. She was so beautiful, she didn't deserve that kind of horrific ending to her movie... 😭
Right, that person is just as deranged as the murderer. Sadistic.
There was a part of me wondering if the 'press' was actually the killer taunting her poor mom. Incredibly heartless thing to do.
A psychopath
@@joelineleach6530 makes you wonder!
. I'm off. Oao
I find it truly sickening that there is sickos out there who have turned her post mortem photos into so called "Art work" and also seen a tattoo like wth is wrong with some people? This was a beautiful young woman who was brutally murdered and slaughtered. And the press to phone her mother absolutely shocking.
So true, although American Horror Story season 1 used her as a character and that’s a very popular show so I’m wondering if a lot of the costumes, art work, and tattoos are based on that and if people knew that it was a true story and not just a fictional character
Yeah, I seen a tattoo parlor in my area did a post Mortem tattoo of her on someone’s hand to go with this person’s horror/serial killer sleeve. It’s disgusting, like she was a real person. It doesn’t matter how long it has been since the case, getting a tattoo like that will always be disgusting.
I’ve always found this case truly horrific and upsetting, so the fact that people can take it so lightly is heartbreaking.
Tomar's story is so tragic, it could be a whole separate case on it's own 😢
I need a documentary on all the alleged victims of this man. Not just Elizabeth, but Tamar, the secretary and whoever else. Just how many people did this man hurt?
You should listen to Root of Evil its a podcast hosted by Tamars Granddaughters
@@AmyAberrantthey made a show with Chris pine about her/the family, dramatized of course
I find cases like this and Jack the Ripper so interesting, but also incredibly frustrating that we will never know who the perpetrator was or get justice for the victims.
Same here. I also find the Cleveland Torso Murders, Villisca Axe Murders, and Axeman of New Orleans interesting - and scary. 😮
When I was in my late teens I heard about this case and like an idiot decided to look up pictures of the crime scene. I could never get the image of her body out of my head. Even to this day when I hear “black dahlia” that’s what I see. Truly horrific what they did to her.
I had made the same mistake before too. The pictures are horrifying!!
Same it's a picture u can't unsee this poor young woman went thru something NOONE should ever go thru ..the killer was a VERY SICK DESTURBED Human
shit like this is why I never go to do deeper research outside of documentaries, because I don't wanna stumble upon alla that
Honestly same, I'm always too nervous to look for more details just in case I stumble upon something horrific
I did that for the jeff dahmer monster and let’s just say……NIGHTMARES for a long time
Yes people have a pathological obsession with this case. To the point people will confess to this crime even though the crime happened decades before they were born.
Odd as it is, it reminds me of the Death Note series. How people falsely confessed to being a supernatural mass murderer just because of fascination or because they understand the thought process Kira had.
May Elizabeth rest in peace.
@@BaobhanloreArtright!!
@@BaobhanloreArtoh yeah that's so interesting
I feel like that one transcript that said "if I did kill the Black Dahlia, they can't ask my secretary because she's dead" is pretty telling. Like that's pretty close to a confession in my mind, although I guess we're missing the full context of that conversation
This is one of the first true crime cases I ever looked into at such a young age, yet I never knew much about Elizabeth. I think you did a great job at humanizing her and bringing her story to life. Now that I’m older I think it’s soooo important to tell the victim’s life story. You did a great job!
The thing that connects The Cleveland Torso Killer and the Black Dahlia Murder is that the killer sent a letter to the Cleveland police saying that "He was moving to Sunny California." Or something like that.
Interesting, I hadn’t heard about that detail
Oh yeah, that’s proof alright 😂😂
and this is why women don't report. she had three eyewitnesses and she still lost her case of rape against her father.
i hate it. i hate it. i hate it.
Thank god some things have changed in the past 70 years. Now people like me exist- I’m a title IX legal advocate at a college pushing assaulters to be held truly accountable
And the house was a frequent party spot for socialites and hollywood elite; all well-known names and people. Between the mobs running streets, hollywood elite knowing and befriending police, and power dynamics in place, I'm sure a lot of things were swept under rugs; an author (Piu) who overlooked investigative papers on the case stated *pages* of credible info were removed. The locker in which this specific case sits in was also witnessed to be guarded by a police officer assigned to do that exact job. Now who does that, but a city who has a *lot* of dirt on everyone.
Definitely george. The fact that many years later they found a notebook under his floorboards confessing ( not in a place where someone would easily find a confession for attention). I think he wanted someone to find it after his death so that everyone would know what he had done after death, but not have to be held responsible. With the man the accidentally fell I feel like they said that based on the time period, but I feel like it might have been on purpose because of grief because of her terrible death and guilt because he wasn’t able to prevent her even though they had spent so much crime together. He already struggled mental health wise so it’s probably not stretch. At that time I feel they never would have published it as a purposeful in the news during that era. I could imagine her being one of george’s patients, him trying to assault her during a visit , and then killing her when she fought back. Office could have been a crime scene and secretary could have found out some how.
My heart breaks for her, she deserves to have peace in her afterlife. It’s disgusting that people dress up as her for Halloween like she isn’t a real person, she deserves so much more respect then what people give her. I hope she gets her peace one day so she may finally rest in peace.
What creeps me out is that only the victim Elizabeth knew who her murderer was only she'll truly know and thats so ominous to me
right?!! that’s what always gets me when it comes to unsolved murders. it just adds another level of creepiness. i wish she could give us a sign, a clue or something so her case could be solved. i just don’t think this was the murderer’s first time killing and i don’t think it was their last time either
If he wasn’t a stranger to her that is!
The fact that scares me to most is the person that did this got to live their life while she couldn’t cause they took it away from her or the fact that this person could be alive
I doubt very much the killer is still alive!! Someone to do such a thing was in their 20s would be over 100 years old now.

@@LOhaha94Yep, she was just barely getting started in her adult life. She could have had a long and happy one. I was very spooked when I realized that she died at the EXACT age I am now, down to the month. Really puts the tragedy of it into perspective.
I was on board with Doctor Hodell and then you mentioned his move to the Philippines where another woman turned up dead the EXACT SAME WAY and I have to believe that it was him. I mean, he must’ve had the strong desire to murder the same way again, but knew that he would be caught if he did it the same way in the same place. Wow. Unbelievable that he got away with it.

I know Eleanor has covered most of the story but if you're interested in learning more about the suspect George Hodel I highly recommend the podcast Root of Evil: The True Story of the Hodel Family and the Black Dahlia. It's narrated by his great-granddaughters and they go into great detail about their very messed up family and their ties to Elizabeth Short with recorded phone calls and interviews. All doubts about him as the suspect will be completely out of the window after listening to this.
Thanks, gonna go check it out❤
I literally just wrote the same comment and saw yours, so removed mine. This is probably one of the most interesting podcasts I've ever listened to just because there is so much going on that you just can't believe it. Really worth a listen too, if anyones interested in the theory involving him.

That podcast is fantastic and so is their follow up podcast series called “Facing Evil.”

So excited to watch Eleanor’s breakdown on this case, your storytelling abilities are incredible. Thank you for all of your hard work!
I mean the thing is; even if the "suppose I did kill the Black Dahlia" sentence was just a hypothesis, why would he in this hypothetical assume that the secretary would know something damning? He basically admits to the fact that 'if he killed the Black Dahlia then the secretary would be the one person who could incriminate him, and she's dead' ...... wow
Such a base assumption has a word in Danish ("hjemmel"), which basically means the base assumption that is not even in question, everyone agrees on it implicitly. Like if I asked "What time should we meet at the movie theater?" the 'hjemmel' would be that we were meeting at the movie theater at all (the way it is phrased, it sounds like everyone agrees that we ARE going, the question is not whether or not, but when). In this statement it is not a question whether or not the secretary might know something that could incriminate him; it's the hjemmel. The hypothetical is phrased in a way where it is assumed that she knew something, it is not questioned; it is phrased in a way that says 'even if I killed her, you would never know, because the one person who knows that I did is dead' ... that quote alone convinced me completely!
Didn't think I was going to be so shocked by the photos. Have mercy, poor poor woman. This person was beyond evil.
This case everybody knows and always discusses. It’s been 7 decades and it’s still in the public eye. Just terrible what happened to Elizabeth.
This was on my 2024 provisional list of cases to cover but I'm so glad you've covered it. I'm so saddened that Elizabeth Short's death hasn't been solved and what happened to her is just gruesome.
Horrible that they got away with it :(
The Black Dahlia is one of the most infamous cases that has intrigued and disturbed me the moment I started digging deep into this case. There's always something sketchy happening behind the scenes when such big and bomming industries are suddenly caught up in controversies.
Remember, it’s Wednesday Addams’ favorite unsolved murder. Lol
I truly lean more towards the doctor , especially hearing what was said on the bugs in the house , this is one case that has bothered me for so long , and it’s so sad knowing it will probably never be solved, but I hope for Elizabeth’s sake it is solved one day

I stopped being nearly as into true crime as I used to be. But one thing I appreciate is I feel like you're much more respectful to the victims in the case than some of the other people I've seen covering things (not trying to be rude, I just feel like people in general are extremely desensitized to things like this)

I always appreciate that she talks so much about the victims and their lives. Others just talk about their death and the killer in detail. They were people, share their story.
This case is so strange to me. I watch every video I find on this case even though there's really never any new information but hearing other people's theories on what happened always piques my interest. Rest in peace Elizabeth Short, I am so sorry your fame came after death.
We JUST drove by the Leimert Park area here in LA where her body was found, and I was telling my 14-year-old niece about what happened, and now I get a notification of Eleanor’s new video… I’m totally creeped out!! 😳
this is such a horrid case, and she was absolutely gorgeous 🙁 she could have a potential big future, but that was taken away by an unknown person forever. may she rest in peace 💗🕊️
Really enjoyed your take and retelling of the infamous Black Dalia murder. I completely agree with your theory on the who murderer was. Also back at that point in time, the LA police were notoriously dirty and it was common practice for them to do whatever they wanted. Innocent people were often given brutal prison sentences, with women often confined to psychiatric facilities and undergo unnecessary lobotomies. Thank you for another great story Eleanor!!
Love the time and effort that Eleanor puts into these videos, I can literally watch them all day
Thank you for digging so deep into this case! I had heard about Hodell and how his son thinks he’s the killer but I never knew about the recordings and the secretary. I think he did it. Such a beautiful girl, such a tragic loss. 💜
I fully buy the serial killer theory that Steve came up with about George.
One thing that keeps me from buying most other theory’s is how personal/brutal this murder is. I don’t think a murder for hire killer would mutilate her face.
Another thing to think about is I can’t imagine this type of killer getting away with this murder then never killing again. Whoever did this got enjoyment from handling her body afterwards. You don’t do something like that once then never do it again. There are more victims.
Read about the Iceman, mafia hitman and serial killer
I remember hearing about this case awhile ago in another video. Im so glad to see you back up and posting again! I would watch your videos for hours, listening true crime is definitely a favorite passing time of mine!
The juxtaposition of EN's cheerful and upbeat manor and the facts of these cases is arresting! She is one of the really good true crime narrators. Her lovely accent always delights. How can we be so happy to listen to such tragedy? Maybe it's a mystery!
This past weekend I actually drove to the location where her body was found. Although it is now part of a driveway, it was eery to know that it was once the spot where she was found. Such a tragic and mysterious ending.
The part where the press told the mother her daughter had won a contest… no words
When I was a little kid, 6 or 7, i read all the books I found. One of those books was "Hollywood Babylon" which has a chapter on poor Elizabeth. It's a haunting case and mythologized so much. Apart from the obvious brutality I find the behavior of the press almost as gross as the suspect Dr. How anyone with a beating heart could do that to her mother is beyond belief. She's become an icon of sorts because we live in a weird world.
Love Elenor’s videos so much! I remember hearing about this as a teen. Looking up crime photos is just interesting to me because I want to be a detective and what they did to her is just so sad.
Eleanor is the only true crime youtuber I’ve watched who discusses cases and the victims with such care and respect. Everyone else makes a spectacle of it
thank you for always prioritising the facts in your cases - its so easy for people to get caught up on the "exciting" rumours and not want to believe the harsh mundanity of it all.

I find it hard to believe that her murder wasn’t done by a serial killer. Whoever did it didn’t do it just to get rid of her, it was definitely sadistic, it couldn’t have been their first or last. Also, the Cleveland torso killer claimed to have moved to LA in 1938 via a letter sent to someone working the Cleveland case. I really wish they would be able to solve this case but I doubt they ever will. 😩

This is one of my favorite cases, I’ve just been waiting for you to go over it❤
Some said the same person who killed 2 more women in 1967 and 1993 in the Philippines, is the one who killed the "Black Dahlia"... And I really do believe that it was George Hodel. I wish you can also cover these cases of the 2 women (the “Chop Chop Ladies) during the years when Hodel was in the Philippines. Thanks for another insightful video, Eleanor! Keep it up! ❤️❤️❤️
On a road-trip rn and this exactly what I needed!!!!
I love true crime videos. I remember when I first heard this case. It's very creepy. Great work as always Eleanor ❤
9:56 I thought she said “beautifully murdered” and I had to rewind it to hear “brutally murdered” 😂😂😂
Hugely impressed with the rate these videos are coming out. Can rely on them weekly now 🤞
This is one of the top true crime stories that fascinates me! So glad you did it. I love that they feature it in the first season of AHS
I hope it all comes out in the open, and what possessed the killer(s) to do this.
Next July she would of been 100 years old! I'm so sorry beautiful Elizabeth, i wish evil didnt encounter you that cruel day! 😢
I’ve watched so many different videos covering the black dahlia but nothing beats Eleanors! I’ve been watching you for 5 years now and you always smash it!
she explains stuff better than my teacher literally i had a projects about a case and i had to watch like 3 documentaries and she made me understand it better than all 3
So excited to hear you tell this story!! You’re amazing xx
@DontReadMyProfilePicture.104 ?
This is my all time favorite case. Your my all time favorite documentary teller. This videos already amazing. Love you eleanor
thank you for making this, I’ve been interested in this case and wanted to know more and you explained it very well!
Honestly, I feel like this case have some sort of foul play. It definitely sad that we might never know who did it.
The first time I actually got excited over a sponsor, when Eleanor was announcing it not me being like "Please let it be casetify again." 😭
ellie, you’ve inspired me to get a casetify case a few weeks ago and i thank you for that
LOVE that you're doing some unsolved crimes as well! xx
I’ve watched this case so many times but I’ve never had anybody go into deep detail and I’m currently at the part where her dad abandon the family and that’s honestly so depressing because not only is it horrible for the mother who already is struggling but also the kids
It was Hodel. Yeah you offered up so much more information in your synopsis than any other you tuber who covered this case.
