If you really have to look at the numbers on the gear stick, you just can't drive a manual.
Sounds like he managed to drive it just fine. Considering this was his first car I can understand the frustration.
The problem could've been that he didn't know whether next gear was going to be 5th or reverse because cars have different gear levers and gearboxes.

Mcquiz95 lol. I never check the numbers on the stick. The ONLY time when you may want to check the numbers is, when you look for the R mode. It can be either top left, bottom right or top right.
Mcquiz95 how would that be a problem, when you shift gears your hand covers up your shift knob anyways, and noone looks at the shifter when the change gears. Have you ever driven a manual?

the first car I bought with my own money, at 18 was a 79 Pontiac Phoenix, it was Pontiacs version of the Nova. Built 350 small block, 4 Barrel Carburetor, high rise intake, built internals (Pistons and rods) headers, duel flowmaster exhaust. Sadly I let a family member drive it after a snow storm and they hit a pile of road sand and went off the road into someone's fence and crashed. It was an accident, things happen. I had it for almost 10 years though, loved that car. Before that I was gifted a 92 Dodge Shadow, a little four Door hatch with four cylinder. The Dodge Neon replaced it after a few years of production.

Mine was a Ferio EK4 Civic. It was a hand me down from my grandpa when I was entering high shool. Swapped it for an EG hatch with a D15 motor.
My first car is a 1976 Camaro I got it when I was 14, and it was in a garage for 20 years and never touched snow, dirt or rain, and driven once the tires never went flat and it had the cover on and never got dust, it's like I went back in time to 1976 and brought it to 2018.

My first car I bought my self, 07 Honda Civic EX 5-sp Manual. Bought it for $4900, had it for 5 months before a red light runner crashed into it. Got $8500 from insurance for it. Now I'm on my second car, 2011 Mustang GT w/ Brembos and 3.73. Bought it from a repo place for $15k CAD 70k Miles. Needed tires, control arms, and an alignment. $1500 later and its fucking mint.
I bought a 83 cutlass for the weekend
