You need to strip the varnish, oil it once a week for 4 weeks, then once a month for 4 months then once a year. Treat it with linseed oil. Should do that with most wooden handles

Many years ago I used a CS Riflemans Hawk for that same purpose. I chose this stuff called Magic Wrap. Stretched to 3X its length as you applied it. I had no intention of throwing it, so I wrapped the top of the handle that wedges under they eye, took a piece of pipe and drove the head down over the stuff, then wrapped the handle much like this. The head NEVER moved and I have pounded the yakk snot out of that thing. No wiggle. Great grip. If it were more expensive I woulda gone with BLO and the old school multiple coat idea, if I had owned one back then, Very nice tool. Always wanted the hunters axe and this one

hey just wanna say that 'wrap' looks to me like standard hockey tape, you can buy it in the vending machines at most rinks or you can get it at any pro shop, theres ones for around 5$ that use a simmilar adhesive to gaff tape and dont get gummy after time (usually splurge for that when ur wrapping ur stick so it doesnt gunk up ur gloves). Its a pretty great material, and if your buy the right type it can do minimal damage to your tools and last a long time. i use it instead of plastidip on my wrenches that I couldnt dip in the first place

Hmm that tackyness isn’t due to cheap adhesive, but age. That roll is probably a decade or so old. I think you would have done it more justice with refinishing it with linseed oil, ala @wranglerstar tutorial.
