In this video we show you how to upholster the outside back of a sofa or couch. This is the final stage of reupholstering a sofa and can be a tricky step for some people. So we've broken down the process step by step and have created an upholstery for beginners tutorial.
Also whilst upholstering the outside back of a sofa, you need to use something called metal gripper or metal tank trap or metal pli-grip (depending where you're from in the world), which can also be a tricky thing to master. So we break this down and give you a step by step upholstery tutorial on how to use metal gripper for upholstery.

Thank you so much for this tutorial video. During my life I have do my own sofas, chairs cover and upholstery. But now I have this curve chairs to do. I wanted to do them before Christmas day. But after seeing this video I want to do it correctly using all these steps. I have the sackcloth and dacron but do not have the Metal track strip. So tomorrow I am heading to a store to see if I can buy it there.

Hi Neil, Thank you for this video. I've watched a couple of your other videos, which helped me repair and beef up an older chair/ottoman set I had and also repair the frame of a friend's couch that was the victim of teenager roughhousing, plus beefed up the springs.
I'm in the planning stages to reupholster a couple of rolled arm chairs w/matching ottomans that were a craigslist find. (I love how they fit, as they are a little smaller than the over-sized pieces that predominate the US furniture market and I can sit all the way back in them without my feet dangling in the air like a 5yr old.) These chairs will be my first reupholster project and I was at a loss how to do the backs. I haven't taken them apart yet but from what I can gather from the inspection of them is they appear to be constructed with the back, arms and deck portions upholstered separately (all sewn, like a slip cover), then the parts were bolted together before the cambric was applied. (I've done some research since buying them and I suspect this set was a one-off as the company is a prototyper of all sorts based in China and they don't do production line work.)
Since the upholstery fit seems a little sloppy I wanted to do more traditional style upholstery techniques, but wasn't sure how to do the backs of the arms and the outside back. The corner of the arm backs sticks out about 2" wider than the corner of the back, with the rolled portion sticking out about 2" further, which would be difficult to use a straight barbed tack strip on (the kind that was on my friend's sofa). Now I know I can use this kind of grip strip (AKA ply-grip or curve ease).
You mentioned in this video that you prefer the 2-prong versus the 3-prong. Would you use the 3-prong for a heavier fabric? What I've chosen for this project is faux suede, but not the really thick stuff. Would the 2-prong work for this or should I go for the 3-prong? Are the tabs on the 2-prong smaller than the 3-prong, and if so, is the 2-prong better for following tighter/smaller curves?

I made the cover up as instructed but when i put it on the cushion, it is too big. Do you think this is because the original foam has compacted due to use? What would you recommend? Thanks!

My Great Grandmother taught me how to sharpen knives & scissors on a smooth river rock when I was a child. I still do it that way. They become so sharp you can filet a hair if you want to... so be careful if you choose to do it yourself 💖🙏😇

I have a mcm accent chair that I took apart. Problem is I don't know how to put back together the inside back. It has a loose back cushion. I believe there was welting across the top and across the top of the frame. Do you have a video that shows connecting the two?

I watch lots of how to videos and never see the staple guns jam or just not shoot the staple all the way in. All of mine get the staple in all the way about 50% of the time. Is it because pneumatic guns are stronger than electric?
Definitely! Electric will never do the job right. Invest in a compressor, air line and staple gun. ✂️⛏️📐📎🧵

The metal tape which you used it in the back is not available in our country what is the substitute for it
Hello! It has a few different names, depending on where you’re from. It can be called metal back tacking strip, pli-grip, curve ease, flex grip, metal gripper. Or you can get an alternative nail metal tack strip. Hope this helps 😊👍🏻
I really have enjoyed watching some of the videos you’ve created. I would have to say I enjoyed all but except one moment where it seemed that there was a short period where Gods name was used in vain. Pity because like I said you really do an awesome job. It would be really nice if you would respect those of us who love God enough that we show reverend respect for Him. Getting past that, could you please show me how to reupholster a high back and arms, deep seated, couch with big thick rolled arm rests. This couch has held up wonderfully. I’ve had it for 25 years and it’s held on through 8 children and a big 6’7” 295 pound man and then there’s me 😊 the most I’ve weighed throughout the years was 145 lbs bu5 think about it ! This set has been a BEAST ! I want to tighten and secure anything that has loosened, I’d like to replace the springs all together bu5 want to use extra heavy duty springs. And from there I’d like to use nothing but the highest quality heavy duty upholstery and if possible I’d like to fill the seats with a memory foam wrapped with down for ultimate comfort. I have Lupus and so I don’t feel up to going out much so I want to be comfortable. I would appreciate if you’d help me. I saw a set on Restoration Hardware called the “ CLOUD COLLECTION “ that’s what I’m aiming for. I can’t afford to buy from them bu5 would like to try and see how close I can get….

Is it worth it to recover
Hi Margaret. Absolutely it's worth it if you like your sofa. You can choose fabric, colour, even style can be modified by a good Upholsterer. I check all the frame and fix anything broken, re pad or replace all cushions. Like having a new sofa but in the colour and fabric of your choosing. And a much better choice than you would get from a high street retailer. Hope this helps and thanks for watching. 👍
Those are called tin snips and are made for cutting metal. Garden shears are probably not going to be good for this.
