If you want the absolute pinnacle of their songwriting ability on this album, definitely check out phantoms. It's one of those songs where the more understanding you have of how to follow the tempo, it becomes even more insane.

My personal favorite track on the album. Just something about it, minimal like you said but the way it builds. There's a point at the end after they hit that straight 4/4 groove riff, it hits that massive chug part and I always lose myself there. Best metal band on the planet!

@@sebastienbrouillard Well, on its own, yes, it is extremely decent. However, if you were to compare it to their previous albums I can see why your son is calling it "sloppy". If this song was 15 minutes long, I'd be lost in it for 15 minutes. This music video (of course the main feature is the song) is awesome, as I think it's the first time in music videos where I've ever seen one I call a sequel. This is definitely the sequel to The Abysmal Eye music video.
You mention Meshuggah and their influence in music. Although bands may sample from them, there is no band even close to what Meshuggah does. They are on an island all by themselves.
Tomas is a freaking genius. He is so incredible at back boning the offbeats to Meshuggah's music, which I think very few drummers could really do. One of the best drummers ever in the metal realm. Another new to me drummer to me is awesome, and that's Haruna from Lovebites. Power/Speed and not Djent, so really hard to compare. It's what they do to push the music is amazing
I saw Meshuggah open for Tool back in 2002 at UMass Amherst. Funny combination, and it showed. Seeing Future Breed Machine live was incredible. The most comical thing though was when their set ended. The people were obviously there to see Tool, a different crowd than Meshuggah would pull in. The looks I saw when they played their last note made me laugh so hard. It was that slow clapping. blank stare, dumbfounded look of thinking what the hell did we just see. Blew Tool away for me.

That is almost like pentatonic. There is something deep in our being that understands the phrygian mode.
I hear the sound in china. I hear the sound in india. I hear the sound in desert blues from africa. I hear the mode everywhere.

Totally agree man (BTW FUCKING *LOVE* THEIR NEW ALBUM ITS *INSANE* ) and i totally dig you saying what you said about the cymbals. They really are a lot less pronounced and clear than usual. I think personally this is a very conscious choice for them. They have started leaning a lot more into not giving away the rhythmic signature/feel of the song or passage or what not. Broken Cog is a fantastic example, where it keeps you in a space between feeling 4/4 and feeling a 3 over 4 feeling (if i am not mistaken). Its not necessarily that they keep ramping up the complexity with their new material, in regards to intrinsic measure/meter/rhythmic stuff, but they have started shedding away at what they reveal to you. I think the cymbals being kinda whited out is intentional to promote this motion.
Also i have had a feeling through the last two records and especially this one, that Thomas has started going a lot more loosely on keeping time with the cymbals. Tracks like nostrum and clockworks on the last record almost keep the groove locked in the snare rolls. Very interesting stuff.

  • @t3hgir
    @t3hgir Pƙed rokem +1

regarding the reaction, faces and grooving along say it all. Meshuggah is basically unmatched. You're right about the mixing of the drums/guitar. I think Tomas even said in an interview they consciously brought the drums down a bit and guitars turned up for this album. Check out the original release of Nothing for a great raw drum mix. You can really hear Haake's ghost notes, foot hihat work and overall dynamics :)
If you want to hear some great insight on Meshuggah's drumming and overall composition check out Tomas Haake's two interviews he did on "drumtalk" an excellent youtube channel interviewing top drummers. :D peace!

Taxing...... that's exactly how it is listening to meshuggah for extended periods of time. I fucking love them but there's so much going on it starts to make your head hurt after awhile trying to decipher it

The cymbal you were referring to is the China cymbal lol. But yeah this album is unbelievable. So happy to see you digging it. I saw them the other night in NYC and got to hang with the drummer for a bit afterwards. It's super impressive how near the end of this song they do fills that never repeat. And speaking of fills, the drums do this thing a few times on this album that I've never really heard before where he fills way all the way through and past the downbeat. Amazing stuff.

Please consider reacting to Megadeth-Wake Up Dead. It's almost an instrumental, there are a couple of verses but it's mostly epic solos and riffage. I was listening to it today and it popped into my head that you would probably love it.

that would be a china or china-boy cymbal to which you refer. he uses a whole rack of them - different weights and tuned to different pitches to cater for the varying levels of ROCK!!

Agreed with the overhead mic comment. Something I miss on this entire album is some of that 8th note or 4th note pulse on the cymbals to add to the groove. I think part of it is that he doesn't play it as often, and part mixing

Haake also had some type of injury, and was healing for a long time.
That may have affected the writing and playing a bit

Future breed machine by them is a must react please it was released in 1997 and was so ahead of its time it’s thrash djenty cause they tuned to f standard and just meshuggah before they created a genre

Idk much about drums but I think you might be looking for is the crash symbol? I have listened to this album, this would of not been the song I would of picked for another music video off their cd, but that's not my decision.

Edit: If you have to pick between the two do violent sleep of reason, for sure. I'm going to recommend God He Sees in mirrors in from their last album. It's a very interesting little song that uses basically the same rhythm the whole song but makes it sound different. I'd really recommend it. Outside of their newest album I'd also def recommend the song "the violent sleep of reason" (the song not the albm" which imo is also very interesting rhytmically.
