8HP50 Teardown for HTG GCU Install

  • On todays episode of the 135i 8-speed adventure we tear down the ZF 8hp50 we are swapping into our BMW N54 135i so that we can convert the internal wiring configuration to HTG specification. We will be using the HTG GCU for transmission control in conjunction with the factory BMW DME. Stay tuned as we reinstall the mechatronics in the next upcoming video. So far so good!

    Pull the lever up on the TCM and remove the Bridge seal to save breaking it , common on ZF

    The 8hp is pretty much in every single new rear wheel drive vehicle. This trans will be like the LS engine of tranmission swaps.

    All zf remove same way haha

    What’s the differences between the DCT and 8HP? And what vehicles comes wit the 8HPs

      DCT is a dual clutch trans and the 8hp is a modern auto with a torque converter

      8hp has more gears, better for power.

    Does the 8hp require coil rewiring like your DCT video? Are the Ryu and HTG PCB the same - if they are the same then the only difference in shifting is in the actual GCU or TCU(?). If the 8hp requires rewiring of the coils, when can we expect that video?

    What did you guys figure out to fix the Park pall coming on when the engine shuts off?

      Unfortunately with the BMW trans we could only make a parking delete so when engine is off it’s always in neutral. For Dodge we have a parking kit and you can have P or N while engine on or off.

    Can you tell us what is the difference between the 8HP - 45 (1st Gen), 50 (2nd Gen), 51 (3rd Gen)? Oh …. and the 55? (Is it RWD or AWD ?).

    So do you guys have a metal oil pan for those 8hp? Or is the plastic cover the only thing thats available right now?

      the filter is built in so we just use plastic but we did order some metal variants that weren't too expensive to try, we are going to test fit and then put on site if they are all good.

    That "thing" @6:30 is the start stop pump, for when the engine shuts off, it keeps pumping fluid in trans to keep oil pressure in trans. So when you let off brake engine is running and you already moving. The F gens and on have that in the 8hps that have the Start Stop function. From what I recall because the e70 x5 didn't have start stop, the n55 and n63 models that had the 8hp70 and 8hp45 those early ones shouldn't have those pumps in there.

      @@SeemsLegitGarage yea no problem! Are the HTG GCUs gonna be on your guy's site? Is it pretty much same functions as the Lamik controller?

      @@darksidemotorwerks9867 yes they are! They are like the Lamik just a bit more capable, like a motec vs piggyback

      In the ZF 8HP transmissions, it's not a pump but a hydraulic accumulator (spring+piston) with a latch mechanism. Function is the same- provide oil pressure to apply clutches for start/stop functionality. Just gives that bit of instant oil pressure/volume before the pump is able to supply.

      It'd be way easier sourcing an 8HP50 than a 70. Worse comes to worse, send it out to PDS for a rebuild

    the htg computer will damage your engine or gearbox. subject widely and hotly discussed in Poland. you will lose time and money. Look for the Turbo Lamik driver. tested and working in a huge number of projects, drift, offroad, or daily.

      That is completely False we have many many cars running the HTG system with great success. Its closed loop control and software is far advanced and the only one being pushed forward.
