    I love those solder fittings. (Time stamp 7:40) What I like to do when I use them is to get a piece of shrink tube and will slide it over the wire before I put the solder fittings together. After I've completed splicing the two wire together with the heat-shrink fittings, I then slide the piece of regular heat-shrink tubing over the new joint and apply the heat to shrink the tubing over the joint. This looks much cleaner than using electrical tape and it is much easier to apply than trying to wrap the electric tape around the new joint.

    The manufacturer of the "Solder/ Shrink" fittings say to NOT use a flame to set them, they require a heat gun to do that. We use these shrink fittings at the boat shop and only use the heat gun. The flame will degrade the outside jacket and actually melt it. In addition, I personally use a secondary heat shrink tube over everything to give it a professional looking connection then cover it with a jacket all the to where it would go through the fire wall to give it a "Factory looking" wire harness. Also right next to the relay/ fuse location is a ground connection point that is a better location for a ground connection as it has no paint there....

    Question. Would it matter if each light were grounded to the vehicle SEPARATELY or alternatively how about if both grounds (one from each light) were connected together and then ground to a single point? Would the differences determine series or parallel? Please explain. TYSM

    • @DieselLegiance

    • @DieselLegiance
      @DieselLegiance  Před 3 lety +1

      Not at all, I thought about running a ground block from the battery to the cab for all of my wiring but I have not got around to it. I just wanted to keep as little wires around the battery and hot engine as possible which is why I grounded at the corner of the frame. Sometimes I ground to the frame underneath if it’s a shorter run and easier depending on the situation such as my power steps. Either way is fine. If you do ground to the frame, just sand the area to make sure it’s clean bare metal.

If still not working, just find the wires from the lights and look for any bad connections. If all wires look good and lights still don’t work, maybe take it to a shop to look at.

      Try 0000 as that’s normally the factory code. If that don’t work you may have to have the dealership reset the code?

    A proper gas-tight butt-splice crimp and shrink tube is far superior to soldering. Soldering weakens the joint.

    Why not just buy the ends and crimpers for the upfitter plugs so you have no spice joint at all? Much cleaner than a bunch of electrical tape connectors. Also do yourself a favor and put your wires in plastic loom for protection and appearance.
    As for last state I'm guessing that didn't work because you selected battery. If you selected ignition the device would be controlled by the ignition and if they were on when the ignition was switched off they'll come back on when you restart. With battery they'll stay on until you shut them off which is probably not what you want for interior lights as you could run down your battery.

      I do use the upfitter ends at the box under the hood. I have used wire loom since this video. I am just always changing things up and sometimes don’t have the loom on hand at the time of filming.

      @@DieselLegiance by ends I was suggesting buying the pins and putting them directly on the wire you are connecting so you don't have to have a splice joint from one wire to another.

      I did not know they had longer leads? The ones I have from the dealership are a metal connector that plugs in but has a splice end as the leads are only about 6” long?
