Ejections 186-187 - After Jose Abreu's HBP from P Lange, L Barrett Ejects CWS Before Benches Clear

  • HP Umpire Lance Barrett ejected White Sox bench coach Miguel Cairo and bench player Tim Anderson following Jose Abreu being hit by a pitch from Tigers reliever Alex Lange, which preceded a benches-clearing brawl. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2021/...
    No warnings were issued in the immediate aftermath of the Abreu HBP as the umpires deemed that Lange's 0-2 offering that struck Abreu on the elbow in the top of the 9th inning and one out of a one-run game was not intentionally thrown at the batter, but after Abreu slid hard into second base as Detroit shortstop Niko Goodrum tagged him out on a stolen base attempt, a benches-clearing incident ensued during which a baseball-esque fight occurred. Neither Lange nor Abreu were ejected from the contest despite 2B Umpire Tim Timmons appearing to restrain Abreu from physically trying to fight at least one member of the opposing team and shoving Timmons out of the way in an attempt to do so.

      and José KNOWS the scouting report: pitchers go inside cuz anything middle/away is gonna get murdered. He knows it. That's the big reason that he's been hit 21 times in 2021. I'm not a fan of pitchers throwing inside, especially fastballs inside from the ribs upward, unless they KNOW where TF to throw. That's what José was probably most upset about. He does not ever crowd the plate. so there is room to pitch inside AND NOT hit him. Getting hit by a damn fastball hurts like shit. I'd be mad, too.
      and the Tigers IF overreacted. again, if José wanted to take him out, that fucker would have been eating dirt. I don't think I've ever see José dive hands first into a base, and I hope he never does. His slide was certainly ON the bag, and the IF was in his slide path, so I dunno what TF he expected to happen.

      again, I do believe the Tigers 2B was who José was really mad at. I'm sure he wasn't happy about getting hit, but that 2B probably said something about José sliding feet first ...... MAYBE he thought the spikes were up. but again, the 2B was straddling the bag as if José was gonna slide in hands first, so IDK WTF he expected.

    i disagree with your assertion of "abreu being under the mistaken belief that he was intentionally thrown at". i think he knew it was not - he literally said nothing and did nothing towards the pitcher as he walked to 1st. he was pissed, sure, i imagine it didn't feel good.
    hard slide into 2nd is likely both working out anger/frustration at the situation AND possibly letting future opponents know that he might well be done just accepting being hit, even UNintentionally. this is not remotely unique in baseball history and, frankly, in his shoes, i would have done so much earlier.

    Abreu's average number of HBP/year is in top 10 range for a career (104 in an 8-year MLB career). He could have a top 10 total for a career if he was able to play a 20-year career. Bottom line is that it isn't just this year (though this year is high even for him). Either he is slow to evade inside pitches and/or he is close to the plate and dives for outside pitches (like Rizzo).

    To me it looked like the 2nd Baseman hit the groin area of Abreu. I actually think that is why the 2nd baseman's hands go up as if saying I didn't mean to. The angle at 5:28 really shows it. So he was just hit by a 97 mph pitch then hit in the groin plus called out. I am not saying anything was intentional but I can see why he started losing it.

      yeah, i agree. i think that's why, for a guy who doesn't crowd the plate or dive into the plate, he is hit so much. if you're going to miss inside with him, you want to miss well off the plate or he'll wreck it. unfortunately, that means he's hit a lot. i think the majority of his HBP lacked intent and i think he realises it because you can see he doesn't typically react.
      on the other hand, it still hurts and you can't blame dude for being frustrated. and, even if you acknowledge that there probably wasn't intent, having the asshole who just hit you with a baseball get in your face like P did here does not help your mood.

    Why would you say Abreu thought he was intentionally hit. He of course knows it was not intentional. His anger likely came from a culmination of being hit so many times and the intense pain of having taken a hit on the elbow.

    Why doesn't MLB go to the NBA rule that only players in the game can participate in skirmishes? Anybody else is automatically elected. Keep everyone off the field. This would limit it to 18 (or 20) players instead of 56.

    • @richmartin1427
      @richmartin1427 Před 2 lety +1

      I think the main reason is in Baseball, the batting team has at most four or five players on the field where the fielding team has nine. And if no one is on, you could end up with a nine on one scenario. This is why the benches clear in these situations. In the NBA, each time always has the same number of players on the court, plus when those things escalate they are so close to the fans that these things can spill into the stands.

    looks to me after watching this replay, Abreu leans into taking this pitch off the elbow. Every other batter in that situation would have lifted his arms out of the way and let the pitch pass. But Abreu clearly leans down into the pitch to take off his arm just above the elbow. If the White Sox are concerned about the number times they are hit maybe they ought to get out of the way and stop taking hits in order to get on base. Clearly that is what Jose was doing here.

I think, at this point, it doesn't really matter if it really was deliberate or not, to the White Sox, at least. They're simply completely "done" with their guys getting hit. I wouldn't be surprised if the White Sox were thinking, that to get this many HBPs, it's gotta be deliberate.

I also don't know where that Sox Player, Abreau, I think, fits in number of HBP in MLB, this season, but if he's been hit by a very large number of HBP, then he could be coming to the conclusion that to be hit that many times, there's got to be some level of deliberate action, there. I don't know, like I said, I basically tuned out back around the All-Star Game and Trade Deadline.
