Ejections 186-187 - After Jose Abreu's HBP from P Lange, L Barrett Ejects CWS Before Benches Clear

- HP Umpire Lance Barrett ejected White Sox bench coach Miguel Cairo and bench player Tim Anderson following Jose Abreu being hit by a pitch from Tigers reliever Alex Lange, which preceded a benches-clearing brawl. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2021/...
No warnings were issued in the immediate aftermath of the Abreu HBP as the umpires deemed that Lange's 0-2 offering that struck Abreu on the elbow in the top of the 9th inning and one out of a one-run game was not intentionally thrown at the batter, but after Abreu slid hard into second base as Detroit shortstop Niko Goodrum tagged him out on a stolen base attempt, a benches-clearing incident ensued during which a baseball-esque fight occurred. Neither Lange nor Abreu were ejected from the contest despite 2B Umpire Tim Timmons appearing to restrain Abreu from physically trying to fight at least one member of the opposing team and shoving Timmons out of the way in an attempt to do so. - Sport
Also quick note : you keep saying Jose thought it was intentional, Nobody in there right minds thinks it’s intentional, but take a major leaguers fastball off your unguarded elbow and anybody would be fuming
Ok? But just because you are fuming, doesn’t mean you get to be a jerk to other people.
If he didn’t think it was intentional, as you claim, he was going to hard slide into a guy who had literally nothing to do with it...
and José KNOWS the scouting report: pitchers go inside cuz anything middle/away is gonna get murdered. He knows it. That's the big reason that he's been hit 21 times in 2021. I'm not a fan of pitchers throwing inside, especially fastballs inside from the ribs upward, unless they KNOW where TF to throw. That's what José was probably most upset about. He does not ever crowd the plate. so there is room to pitch inside AND NOT hit him. Getting hit by a damn fastball hurts like shit. I'd be mad, too.
and the Tigers IF overreacted. again, if José wanted to take him out, that fucker would have been eating dirt. I don't think I've ever see José dive hands first into a base, and I hope he never does. His slide was certainly ON the bag, and the IF was in his slide path, so I dunno what TF he expected to happen.
@@dhinton1hit the nail on the head
@@rickhaavisto9023 he didnt go into him tho....
make it 22 cuz he got hit in virtually the same spot as #21 tonight ......
again, I do believe the Tigers 2B was who José was really mad at. I'm sure he wasn't happy about getting hit, but that 2B probably said something about José sliding feet first ...... MAYBE he thought the spikes were up. but again, the 2B was straddling the bag as if José was gonna slide in hands first, so IDK WTF he expected.
i disagree with your assertion of "abreu being under the mistaken belief that he was intentionally thrown at". i think he knew it was not - he literally said nothing and did nothing towards the pitcher as he walked to 1st. he was pissed, sure, i imagine it didn't feel good.
hard slide into 2nd is likely both working out anger/frustration at the situation AND possibly letting future opponents know that he might well be done just accepting being hit, even UNintentionally. this is not remotely unique in baseball history and, frankly, in his shoes, i would have done so much earlier.
Who are you internet warrior? A disagreement on the internet and you voiced your position succinctly, intelligently, with no F bombs, no threats and in a well written manner.
I salute you and thank you for being you!
Abreu's average number of HBP/year is in top 10 range for a career (104 in an 8-year MLB career). He could have a top 10 total for a career if he was able to play a 20-year career. Bottom line is that it isn't just this year (though this year is high even for him). Either he is slow to evade inside pitches and/or he is close to the plate and dives for outside pitches (like Rizzo).
On this he basically didn't even react until after being hit. Dude has tunnel vision, it's why he's a good hitter but... Also why he can't get outta the way of pitches
To me it looked like the 2nd Baseman hit the groin area of Abreu. I actually think that is why the 2nd baseman's hands go up as if saying I didn't mean to. The angle at 5:28 really shows it. So he was just hit by a 97 mph pitch then hit in the groin plus called out. I am not saying anything was intentional but I can see why he started losing it.
Exactly! He didnt charge the mound.
Yeah I definitely agree, he was mad at a nut shot
Tim Timmons deserves a lot of credit for separating players as quick as he did. Probably saved punches from being thrown.
Or what equates to "punches" in baseball.
He’s really good, but let’s be honest - baseball players don’t actually fight. They tittie bump and say that’s “horseshit” to each other.
José is not a fighter but that Tigers IF would have eaten a left if Timmons had not gotten in there that fast.
@@dhinton1 and then the White Sox players would of gotten in and caged them Tiger players with very little effort
Hit 21 times this season. I don't blame him one bit for being pissed off. Tigers was more of a "wrong place, wrong time" situation. I doubt Abreu has any problems with them personally, just the fruition of getting hit so much the past few years. I've never seen Abreu mad like that ever. Dude is class personified.
A classy player wouldn’t have slid that hard and late to try and force contact with someone he’s not even mad at
@@seanmaher3401 Show me where that was an illegal slide. Perfectly within the rules. And I'll take what other professional players, coaches etc say about Abreu than some dork on the internet
It’s an 0-2 count in a one run game. Does he really think it was intentional?
he probably didn't. you can see he was pissed at being hit yet again but didn't do anything other going to first. on the other hand, getting hit by a baseball sucks and he probably had enough so, yeah, he got mad and made a strong slide to take out/express his frustration.
i will counter your point, SS' leg was dangling there. if abreu truly wanted to, it would have snapped like a twig. but he slide *into* the base instead. do you or SS really think he tried to hurt SS?
Abreau did it to "rally" the squad, they gave up 5 runs in the last inning and they need this win! I look at it like a hockey fight to get your team to wake up!
He gets hit almost every game
I think that because so many pitchers are throwing inside to him, erring on the side of hbp instead of letting a ball over the plate where he can do damage, and then no warnings are given because there is “no clear intent,” that frustrations boiled over
@@btwentwo
yeah, i agree. i think that's why, for a guy who doesn't crowd the plate or dive into the plate, he is hit so much. if you're going to miss inside with him, you want to miss well off the plate or he'll wreck it. unfortunately, that means he's hit a lot. i think the majority of his HBP lacked intent and i think he realises it because you can see he doesn't typically react.
on the other hand, it still hurts and you can't blame dude for being frustrated. and, even if you acknowledge that there probably wasn't intent, having the asshole who just hit you with a baseball get in your face like P did here does not help your mood.
Can you do an analysis of the O’Neil potential obstruction from two days ago vs Cubs?
I’m a huge white sox fan, Jose has taken some absolute bullets to the elbow and honestly it’s a shame he doesn’t just wear an elbow guard, but what your seeing here is built up frustration from the White Sox being taken out on poor old Detroit
I'm shocked he doesn't wear the Alonso hockey pads
What happened after the fight when the umpire called time just as the pitcher was in his motion?
Love how baseball players go after someone...wait until you're separated by 20 feet and someone's got ahold of you, then act like you are trying like hell to get at someone, but darn it...someone is holding me back!
Great job Timmy holding back Abreu!
Tough to know why Miguel Cairo got ejected, I guess he must've been yelling profanities at the umpires from the dugout? Nothing evident from what I can see/hear, but also confusing why he would be yelling at the umpires instead of the pitcher.
We've seen recently that yelling at other players is tolerated (I assume there is still a line) with Brandon Hyde yelling at Ricky Ray, so it must've been pretty bad if that's the case.
Any ideas?
I would say yelling profanities at the umpire or yelling across at the other dugout.
probably at the umpire.
I'm sure Miguel dropped a few expletives.
It just feels like Jose's frustration of no one sticking up for him after the years of greatness he's given the organization *side eyes Tony La Russa*
Why is this s only a one run game?
Dangerous slide...for abreu
Yep, that's how you get hurt, sliding that late.
Abreu didn't even try to get away from that inside pitch.

Jose Abreu: I've been hit 21 times
Barry Bonds: Hold my beer
Jose gets hits way too many times. 97 mph on the arm is horrible
The White Sox as a team has been hit more than 70 times. This was a crazy game that showed anything can happen in baseball. The Tigers were down by five runs and bam! They started scoring runs. I think some of the anger came from the pressure for the need to win. Goodrum did not seem to have done anything wrong. He tagged him out. I like both teams. The White Sox have been playing well all season, and the Tigers have been better lately. Just never know with baseball. Play ball!
Exactly 70 times good for 9th in the league. 3 teams trailing them are within 3.

He was upset because Goodrum tagged him in the jewels. And after already getting hit by a pitch.
If you’re able to slow down the pitch. You can see that LANGE was aiming for Abreu. All that said, I really enjoyed your breakdown of this video. Well done
🤣Aiming for him. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
It's the end of the season, White Sox already clinched the AL Central, and now they're gonna do this SHIT????? FUCKING RIDICULOUS
Jose was okay until the pitcher said something to him and then he caught fire.
I think José might have been more upset at the Tigers IF that got lippy about his slide into 2B. José had every right to slide in FEET first (I don't want him sliding in HAND first) and the IF was straddling the base. I dunno WTF he expected to happen. If José wanted to take him out, that slide WAS NOT gonna do it.
Guy is in an 0-2 count in a close game and people are barking? Know the situation.
Well let's analyze this, the commentators kept saying it's the maddest they have ever seen Abreu since he put the uniform. Maybe the person tagging him at second said something in the lines of "Hey no reason for such a strong slide could have gotten me hurt." I wish we knew what was actually said, as a Cuban born myself I feel like Abreu doesn't get the respect he has earned, intentional or not he has gotten drilled a lot this season coincidentally after his MVP season last year. Also Paredes got hit earlier in the game, Abreu getting hit is Retaliation, which of course you do to the teams best player. They didn't drill Collins, no offense Collins.
Hear Here Felix! I feel the same way, but in Chicago (the Southside anyway) Jose Abreu is KING. We love him.
Yea, hit him with an 0-2 count. Makes sense....
@@beerrun5 What do you have to lose? You're not going to go to the playoffs, you're not even finishing above .500. The Sox have consistently whooped that ass this year, your losing the game, in the 9th and Hendricks is coming up. Paredes got drilled earlier, and it's Abreu who has gotten drilled 21 times this year, a guy who is stoic, even keeled cold even with very little emotion, not like Tim Anderson for example. So you drill him, with the excuse that in a 0-2 count were first two strikes were COMPLETELY away, you come in and it "gets away from you."
@@felixrojas2575 Ridiculous. Lange isn't going to earn a job next year by drilling first batter on a 0-2 and down by 1. He's going to retire the side and give his guys an opportunity to win.
@@ktpinnacle Your Also not earning a job from a cheater head coach who tells you to drill someone and you don't do it.
Since no swings without a bat happens no elections. Jawing at each other is fine and in my opinion prefered by mlb. If fists are thrown so are players from the game.
Its understandable Abreu was upset. Getting hit with a baseball thrown 90+ mph is not fun at all. The frustration probably stems back to when he was hit in the head earlier in the season
And all the times he’s been hit in between
So he should try to take out the knees of a shortstop? No

Does the umpire get fined/ suspended for going hands on….pushing players apart then hands on runner? Does runner get fined/ suspended for pushing passed the umpire?
No. This is the one case where umpires are allowed to put their hands on someone to prevent a fight. Tim Timmons did a great thing there. Abreu should actually send him a thank you card because he would have been suspended for quite a while.
Tim Anderson got suspended three games for the latter when he put his hands on Timmons.
Why would you say Abreu thought he was intentionally hit. He of course knows it was not intentional. His anger likely came from a culmination of being hit so many times and the intense pain of having taken a hit on the elbow.
You're clearly missing the fundamentals of the sport and what is going on.
Add that Goodrum was talking shit to a guy is is extremely pissed off from being hit.
This pitchers are stupid haters Jose got hit 21 times times this season SMFH..we love you Jose dale duro hermano..GO SOX we #1
I think that Steve stone knows a little bit more about baseball than the commentator here does you hit the guy 21 times he’s got limits
Why doesn't MLB go to the NBA rule that only players in the game can participate in skirmishes? Anybody else is automatically elected. Keep everyone off the field. This would limit it to 18 (or 20) players instead of 56.
I think the main reason is in Baseball, the batting team has at most four or five players on the field where the fielding team has nine. And if no one is on, you could end up with a nine on one scenario. This is why the benches clear in these situations. In the NBA, each time always has the same number of players on the court, plus when those things escalate they are so close to the fans that these things can spill into the stands.
Don't mess With la russa
You can clearly hear screaming from the dugout. I can see where Chicago is coming from. We just won the central.

@@chuckfan1 He did say “vocal chord injury” on a previous video.
looks to me after watching this replay, Abreu leans into taking this pitch off the elbow. Every other batter in that situation would have lifted his arms out of the way and let the pitch pass. But Abreu clearly leans down into the pitch to take off his arm just above the elbow. If the White Sox are concerned about the number times they are hit maybe they ought to get out of the way and stop taking hits in order to get on base. Clearly that is what Jose was doing here.
I don't think the commentary between clips was needed
As the announcers noted, the White Sox have been HBP something like 70-something times. I think, at this point, it doesn't really matter if it really was deliberate or not, to the White Sox, at least. They're simply completely "done" with their guys getting hit. I wouldn't be surprised if the White Sox were thinking, that to get this many HBPs, it's gotta be deliberate.
That’s 9th in mlb. 33 behind the dodgers, 25 behind the al leading A’s.
So what?
@@edsidawi1448 Ever since "my Cubbies" traded away our best players, and turned it into a rebuilding year, I've lost most interest in the Season, although I'll tune back in for the Playoffs. That being said, they were seeming to make a point about the number of times the Sox had been HBP, so that's what I was going from. I also don't know where that Sox Player, Abreau, I think, fits in number of HBP in MLB, this season, but if he's been hit by a very large number of HBP, then he could be coming to the conclusion that to be hit that many times, there's got to be some level of deliberate action, there. I don't know, like I said, I basically tuned out back around the All-Star Game and Trade Deadline.
