I just cant express how grateful I am to have the chance to get this amazing behind the scenes view into a world I would and could not otherwise have known about!! Thank you so much!
Oh and Jeff is such a nice and amazing guy and artist!!
This Is great, love the behind the scenes stuff, thanks
You all probably dont care but does anybody know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid lost the password. I appreciate any help you can offer me.

@Maximus Zyaire I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Maximus Zyaire It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you really help me out !
@Braxton Jakob No problem :D
Saw my first Umphrey’s McGee show the summer of 2017 in Indianapolis. I was immediately struck by the astonishing light sculpting - as artistic and inventive as the music itself. The Keith Emerson of light!
So much fun to see this, Waful, thanks!!
I have been UMPhamily for decades and this is one of the coolest play by play for any live show I have ever seen. This is really awesome! Thank you for sharing.
Loved it! I also echo the opinions to make this an ongoing series. Absolutely fascinating! Thanks Waful
Wow! Fascinating walkthrough from one of the best.
Waful is the man! Miss seeing him at the shows and his excellent work.
Really great video. Thanks to everyone!
Care and attention to every detail. Why I am a diehard UM fan.
Many years after,
15 years being a LD and I'm still impressed by this way of work.
Seriously loved this video. Please make this first of a series.
Amazing commentary and great insight for up and coming ld's to understand what you are doing.
What a great video! Only just discovered this channel so guess I'm binging them all tonight
love these!
Wow this was freaking amazing, just made me realize that I need to add a lighting director to the band !!! This guy was amazing!!!
You are awesome! The lights always make the show 100x better! I wish I could learn all of that to do it!
Wow. This is intense!
9:14 he nails the end of the Mozart section!
what is it called ?
Thank you for sharing this!
So cool, more like this please!
This is INSANE. He's so good.
This is awesome!
I just have to say that 10.51 through to 12:00 second mark is just a brilliant passage. Beautiful lighting.
I can't believe this video is available for free.
Awesome! What a nice work! More please. ;)
This is brilliant! So interesting
I've never commented on a youtube video, but this is so awesone! Please keep posting!
That would be my dream job honestly...
Kudos from Brazil
The level of professionalism I am aspiring to for sure
Thank you so much from the heart bcuz I just bought my Rockville Rockforce 384. You have gifted me a treasure trove of wonderful lighting ideas .
This is magical!! I never thought about how much it takes to light a show like this. I'll never look at it the same way again.
And thats the pushing the button part, not programming the colors and movements for those buttons :)
めちゃくちゃ勉強になる!
最高🔥🔥
Fascinating!
God damn this video is great, had no idea all the work that went into the lights!
amazing work!!!!!
Most people do not have a clue what the behind the scenes guys have to deal with and go through so the show is as great as possible. Great info and great job.
This is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
Just WOW! 🤩 you nailed it Bro! 👏🏼 🎩
That's BRILLIANT
amazing!!!!!
Such a gem of a video. I have a van RIDDLED w LED lights inside w preset animations to choose from, but i dream of having full control of them, this was very fulfilling to watch, i must chase after this
Thank you!
Years ago I did lights for a band becasue their light guy was not there. It was a simple set up. 2 trees that each had four cannon lights of Red, blue,Yellow, Green, there may have been other light. . I had SO much fun doing that and I was good at it. I knew the songs, I also played piano/keys in a band as well so that helped. It always made me want to try it again.
Of course THIS guy is in and entirely elevated league than what I toyed with.
just started doing this job as a 19 year old, do you have any advice for me for the future!!
@@rosswiliams
Not really because I only did it once haha
Bad ass! Show looks great.
The dj for lights!

Several of the details I discovered hard to believe.
Will there be an additional video appearing quickly, wish so.
In the moment!
Thank You so much for this Video!! I learn soon on how to Control Lights at My Church so Thank You 😁
So cool to see that
That was so cool
This was super interesting! Make it a series. I don't think I'm the only one who wants more info on this type of stuff.
It is: lukestrattondesigns.com/thelightside/
Dylan Smith Dude thanks for this link. I never thought there would be a podcast on this.
Being a DMX artist is like being a visual percussionist at this point- great work man!
This is a great behind-the-scenes look. I feel like a lot of bands don't give the production values of lighting and sound the attention they deserves. Here's a pro who's thinking about it.
That said, I have a request I hope will be passed on to lighting designers everywhere: who came up with the idea that shining bright LED beams directly into the eyes of the audience was a good move??
This is great! Love UM! Not saying that I have experience with this level of tech or performance at all, for sure, but I work as a stagehand and work spotlight positions which is very simple and straightforward for the most part, but every once in awhile things can get heated in the coms. Most bands LDs are very cool and laid back though professional, every once in awhile ya get an LD who's taking themselves too seriously, expecting you to do things that they haven't prepped you on, or perhaps been on the road too long & just stressed out. But very interesting commentary on one of the absolute greatest live bands and the most phenomenally intricate and intense light shows!
it's 2023 and I am here for notes
Great Info cant wait on the next video.
Many thanks for the advise from your video clip cant wait for the next episode.
Would like to below more from you many thanks.
I really hope every person else got as much from this as I did, thanks once again.
Several of the info I discovered hard to believe.
Will certainly there be an additional video clip appearing quickly, wish so.
Insane.
Really awesome that you and Luke got to sit down and do this, thanks a lot! I was just wondering what those four macros in the bottom right do?
He might as well take the console and control it from the stage itself. At times it does not even look any different from a keyboard player.
The first time I saw a lighting operator live was at a cover band gig, but the lights lad was pretty much playing the console as a musical instrument, with perfect timing. It was a very small console, but that shit was impressive.
Now this guy playing the lights... having to follow all those changes in the songs, even deaf people could enjoy a damn good show.
The LD is _extremely_ important!
Fun watching this video, I miss lighting
What happened? Did you quit
dream job
Hey man remember when we wired the lights up at the cape cod melody tent that was a trip man. It looked like a space ship in there. Hope your doing good man.
Hope Sarah Allen is still there at this masterpiece of a venue. Oldest fam friend.
Awesome
i'm really interested to know the list of fixtures used in your stage !
how the heck does he nail transitions like 15:12 when they decide to go back to dbk? or stuff like the "stops+lights out" that they do in stewarts? let's hear one with the in-ear dialogue!
Next to CK5, Jefferson is the greatest lighting designer on the road today
Good!!
Looks stressful but very fun
Thoroughly impressed
I would love to know, what spots are you using there. They looks amazing!
Jefferson, you're every bit a 7th member of the band! While Umphrey's would certainly rock in the dark, you take it to a whole other place!
Me trying to replicate this with my small venue setup
minuto 16:31, parece que las luces lo están despeinando! Muy bueno!
I just wish someone would let me do this for them someday although I haven't gotten my hands on it, I feel like I can pull it off though 😅 looks stressful but funn
This is a professional stage lighting DMX controller MA3 Lighting controller,
The control technology of this console and the little brother is also amazing!!!😍
am I the only one who noticed those 2 Duracell double A batteries on the right?
So essentially what I see is all of the lights on pretty much all of the time, doing the same cone shapes but in lots of different colours. Interesting.
Would LOVE a gear run-down for this.
If only I could eat the wafuls with me mouth, I guess I'll soak em in through the eyes! Amazing bts look!!!
I want more videos of Jeff

THE UNSUNG HEROES!!!!!!!!!
Where’s the first episode of lighting director commentary?
miss this fucking dude.
How do I come into that buiseness for real ?
I'm Finishing school in 2 years and at my school I'm in the Technic Team trying go understand Basic Things of Sound, Lights and Video. But what is your opinion is a Education a Good Thing or unnessesary ?
I always tought that lighting at concerts it s done by computer..😮
Sheeeeesh
What lights are on stage they have sick effects
Good attitude, I spent time on stage in the 80’s. The only take the light tech to the side I ever had was..,. If i am playing, don’t turn them all out. LOL. Oh , one exception. One man was a neatnick, wanted to roll the cords into coils. Think Parr cans and rolled up cords. (Thumbs up if u know why that’s a problem, comment if you have had it happen)
Do you ever timecode any performances?
And I though I took umphreys seriously... whoa Jeff;)
Hay tutoriales de esta consola dmx??
Does the Light Engineering course teach anywhere
Please reply anyone
good
