Lots of people in England sit in cemeteries, eating lunch, or strolling even. I’ve done it too. Many don’t really think they’re that creepy on a nice day.

This is a graveyard not a cemetery. A graveyard is attached to the local parish church, in this case St Mary's Church Whitby. The ruins of a church in this video is Whitby Abbey.

I know this graveyard well. You mentioned the stone with 'Mafter Mariner'...in the 18th and early 19th centuries, 's' was often written like an 'f'. If you go inside St Mary's Church here, you can the same thing on large painted boards with prayers and so on written on them. It's fascinating. Great tour!

I find it astounding and incredible that Francis and Mary Huntrodds were born on the same day, married on one of their birthdays, and died on their 80th birthdays five hours apart, in an era when the average life expectancy in England was approximately 36 years in the 17th century. In fact it was 35 years in 1600 and 37 years in 1700 respectively. Remarkable!

Memel, East Prussia, Germany, now Klaipėda, Lithuania. Beautiful old Cemetery by the sea. I'm sure the salt water and air have weathered these stones a lot. A lot of the stones look like they are sandstone...not a very hard stone. All things considering, given their age they are amazing stones with gorgeous designs. Such history here ...thank you for sharing !!

This was absolutely incredible. The stones weathered so differently than what I see locally. The "noodles" were unbelievable. I wouldn't have made it to the top of those 199 steps without many stops along the way. I can understand the need for the coffin rests along the way. The view from the top was breath taking. I enjoyed this so much. Thank you for sharing.

Loved this tour. Sad to see the degree of erosion on many of the headstones, but fascinating at the same time the manner in which the salt air erodes the stone. A passage from Puget Sound was inscribed on one of the headstones. Puget Sound is located off the coast of Washington State in the U.S., so that was quite a long journey! Quite a long trek up those stairs - thanks for taking that one for the team 😉

The area around that Abby is really beautiful thank you so much for sharing. I almost wonder if those headstones were made of sandstone or limestone. That might be the reason with the Salt Air, the headstones have deteriorated. Anyway what a beautiful scenery around there. Really enjoyed the view thank you.

I heard in the original bram stocker novel, the sun never killed Dracula it only paralyzed him. But when it came to Nosferatu in that film orlock who was Dracula, in the movie was able to die by the sun. That’s where the death of vampires getting killed by the sun came from. So any actual bram Stoker novel Dracula never died by the sun he was only paralyzed, and also as a little twist bram Stoker‘s wife sued the production company who made Nosferatu, because apparently they didn’t have the rights to make a film kind of based on Dracula even though the character orlock wasnt called Dracula so when she sued the production company, the judge ordered that all the copies of Nosferatu would be destroyed. All the copies were burned except one copy of the film which was able to last over the centuries and Thank goodness that copy lasted now it is 100 years old. I love silent movies and Nosferatu is one of them. also when you watch Nosferatu you see the guy in the movie walking down the stairs, the main antagonist, you see him walk downstairs and you see this giant coffin, and it has oarlock laying in the coffin, and the guy that looks at the vampires face oarlock who is played by German actor Max Schreck The guy gets scared and runs back up the stairs. I thought that scene was completely hilarious, I was waiting for Orlock do the major pain thing, you know how in the movie major pain Daman wayans is laying there with his eyes open and the fat kid sleeps beside him, and they want major pain to go away because I think he’s mean or whatever, great movie it’s hilarious, and The fat kid is snuggled up to major pain major pain puts his arm around him squeezes the kids shoulder looks at him and says hello Betty, in Nosferatu that’s not what orlock does but my point is in the movie, after that guy‘s looking at him like in his cough in there, I was waiting for Orlock to jump up and say boo that would’ve been hilarious. Or I was waiting for Nas Ferrato to say hello Betty like major pain said that would’ve been hilarious. Also in Nas Ferrato I love how Orlock is laying in his coffin and then all of a sudden for him to rise, he like comes up you get what I mean he just comes up with a mighty stride I guess and he standing there like all menacing it’s just great I love all 20s silent movies that’s why I’m a big fan of them especially of Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and the hunchback of Notre Dame play by Lon Chaney and also Phantom of the opera as well love it launch Cheney did a great job too.

The large number of seafarers’ graves is because Whitby was heavily into fishing and whaling in the past and was an important port. The grave that mentions Port Jackson is a reference to Sydney Australia. The stone cross is a memorial to Caedmon, the first English poet. The cross is 19th Century, hence it’s good condition. The church itself is extremely interesting, being Norman, but having box pews throughout and a triple decker pulpit with sounding board. The local gentry were the Chomeley family, who built their pew with fat barley twist legs right across the chancel arch. Well worth a look. Their hall is now part of the visitor experience to Whitby Abbey. The 199 steps up to the graveyard are unforgettable and have shallow steps to help mourners to carry the coffins up to the graveyard.

One thing that really annoys me is it’s sort of an unwritten rule that you go up the left and down the right, but sometimes people go against the grain, even if there is a mass of people heading towards them!

The sea air and changes in temperature can do a real number on headstones. It also depends on the material used to build the headstone. Sandstone and other soft materials will erode must faster. One of the reasons I must travel back to Belfast, NI to repair my grandparents and great grandparents headstones.

Been there a couple of times and it is as beautiful as it looks, my little brother saw three monks in the Abby grounds ( there was no one there) he was only 3 yrs old so couldn’t have made it up, he said they were men with funny dresses with hats

'Mafter Mariner who should be Master Mariner' was fine. The 'f' is a long s in Old English. You note the word also, which has two inscriptions uses the long s as well.

First thoughts, coastal erosion maybe play havoc here in a few years. Another interesting video. Thank you

Absolutely Andy, I could see a few land slips when I was on the beach. May only have 30 years or so left if its lucky

I'm from North Yorkshire and proud. Whitby is one of the most magical places in North Yorkshire that anyone can visit but unfortunately it's become a tourist Mecca for people who just let their dogs piss on graves. The last time I was there it was full of Chinese students who were standing on top of Greaves and also climbing English heritage properties.. they just saw everything is a joke until somebody came out and shouted at them the Yorkshire way.. you may get away with crap like that in London but you don't get away with disrespecting us here in North Yorkshire.. Whitby cemetery has changed somewhat. I remember about 10 years ago people were picking up body parts that had been pushed out from the cliffs.. I'm not sure whether they have rectified the problems but unfortunately due to coastal weather and erosion Whitby cliffs are getting smaller.. I think they have underpinned them now to stop this taking place.. but yes can you imagine walking and then finding somebody's shoulder or leg bones on the beach below or protruding out of the.. at one point you can actually see bones sticking out of the side of the Cliffs.. horrifying site.. I think they have put nets right long.. I was only in Whitby months ago. It's one of the greatest places on earth apart from tourism.. if you want to visit Whitby it's best to visit it late at night when it's misty and very atmospheric. I used to do paranormal walks in another life and Whitby was one place we were based ... You can't beat North Yorkshire.. I only live 30 miles inland from Whitby.. it's a beautiful seaside town. Do you not research? St Hilda is a legend in these parts ..Hilda of Whitby.. a ghost is said to haunt the Abby .
