    The amount of comments saying “well Tonya Harding didn’t have all that equipment but she could do it” to put mirai down is just? So stupid? Congrats to tonya but she’s not skating anymore for obvious reasons and Mirai is our Olympian athlete as of right now. Don’t put down her achievements dang

    • @jondavwal13
      @jondavwal13 Před 6 lety +43

      They did have that equipment during Tonya's era. In fact they show lots of video of people using harnesses in many different ways in the 80s.

      @nou174 Před 5 lety +24

      DeathBecomesHer Tonya's accomplishments do not take away Mirai's accomplishments. Also, It's actually not the truth because they did have this equipment back then, so sorry sweetheart.

      @l.carlson2026 Před 5 lety +8

      They had the jump harness back in Tonya's days. 🙄
      Mirdori Ito and Tonya were muscles which takes away from being graceful on the ice.
      This skater is graceful and getting her jumps without heavy weight lifting.

    • @l.carlson2026
      @l.carlson2026 Před 5 lety +5

      @DeathBecomesHer lol What truth? You seriously think jump harness werent around in the 80's and 90's. You seriously don't think Tonya used them? Ignorance.
      Too bad Tonya had horrible morals and sportmanship. And no she is not the best jumper and definately not a top skater.

    • @izzymurrell8723
      @izzymurrell8723 Před 5 lety +4

      @@l.carlson2026 I have to disagree; Tonya and Midori you could see properly kick off the ice, whereas Mirai and other skaters who can land this jump just rotate off of it. Both are great technically, and without different body types and styles we wouldn't have the individuality and artistry we have in skating. But kudos to Mirai for being one of the handful who have landed this in competition.

      First step is marching on the ice and using the wall for balance. Once you can march comfortably and balanced, then skating should be little easier. I started skating 3 years ago when I was 32 and it took 2 people to get me over to my first class. If I can do it, you can too.

    We are now up to 9 ladies who have landed a triple axel in international competition. Alysa Liu the new US ladies champion at 13 years old landed 2 triple axels in her LP. She landed one at the Asian open in 2018 which was international. We are now up to 3 ladies landing a 3A at the olympics, Midori, Mao and Mirai. there is a distict possibility both Rika and Alysa will land a 3A at the 2022 olympics. Credit Midori probably the greatest technical skater ever for starting the push forward in ladies skating by landing the 1st triple axel internationally at the NHK in 1988 and then Tonya landing it at the 1991 US championships. Mirai has joined a select group and it is well deserved.

      @tawnyflower-in5yy Před 6 lety +42

      Actually, you don’t spot in skating, because you’re rotating so fast that it’s literally impossible. This goes for spins too. It’s something that you just have to develop tolerance for over much practice, unfortunately

    • @nicholasliu5788
      @nicholasliu5788 Před 6 lety +6

      As a very noob figure skater, I can attest to this. I wouldn't call myself a proficient or experienced skater by any stretch, but even I've learned to deal with the dizziness that comes with spinning anticlockwise. And it's directional; any attempt to spin clockwise makes me dizzy after three revolutions. You can only wonder what it'd be like for these skaters.

  • @singingpinkclover
    @singingpinkclover Před 6 lety +139

    mao's triple axel was small in distance and height and were excessively pre-rotated, and she wasn't very consistent either. i was always amazed by midori's huge huge triple axel and mirai is working so hard for that, hope she lands it at the olympic!

    • @hantingchen5497
      @hantingchen5497 Před 6 lety +26

      Maos distance was not small, it was an average jump distance. Her triple axel height is immense, way way WAY higher than any girls any jump for the past decade, there are exact measurements online. I believe her axel is 61cm vertical length in comparison to the other girls. Prerotation???? I disagree and shes rarely been downgraded for prerotation (usually underrotation at the ending of the jump). And lmao at the consistency comment, she may not have a 100% success rate but she has accomplished the jump wayyy more than any other lady in history. Midori landed less than 6 in competition, mao had more than 4 times that many. Im a huge fan of midoris axel, but to talk about maos like that is hilarious

    • @singingpinkclover
      @singingpinkclover Před 6 lety +5

      she was never downgraded because she fulfilled the requirement for not pre rotating more than 1/2 turn on ice. axel allows you to pre rotate 1/2 and underrotate 1/4 turn, allowing a skater to only rotate 2&1/4 in air in conclusion. i'm not saying her axel is horrible and needs to be downgraded, it's just that she knows that rule and because of that rule, she always pre rotated (literally pre rotated, i'm not saying she needs to be downgraded because like i said, she still met the requirement) 1/2 on ice and the rest in air. most skaters only pre rotate about 1/4 turn for an axel (because you kinda have to and that is why axel allows you to pre rotate more than other jumps) but mao turns 1/2 on ice so she can only rotate 3 in air. if you look at slow mo of other skaters, they pre rotate a bout 1/4 in which only the front toe pick is on the ice at the end of 1/4 turn, meaning they're getting ready for take off, but mao's full blade is on the ice at the end of 1/2, and she starts from there. this is just a personal opinion that i prefer midori's huge jumps. mao obviously knew how to jump 3A and i'm not saying it's wrong. she got the points, but im just saying it's not the textbook axel.

    • @jondavwal13
      @jondavwal13 Před 6 lety +3

      Midori landed it 12 times that I can count. And unlike Mao she had every other jump as well. Midori also was capable of a triple Axel/triple toe. Mao could only dream of that.

      @@baritonebynight actually there will never be another Midori. Tonya only landed them competitively in 1991. Midori was landing them from 1988 to 1996. Midori had height, distance, speed. slowest rotation, and a recklessness that no one else had doing a 3A. Also you can watch videos on you tube of Midori doing a 3A-3T in warmup and practices for the lalique tourney and albertville olympics. Tonya could only dream of doing a 3A-3T combination. In any ranking of ladies triple axels I have ever seen, Midori is always rated #1.

    Love Mirai..!! She's a natural born talent and it shows in all aspects of her skating. She shouldn't ever doubt herself. If she wants them 6's across the board, she better just concentrate on nothing and attack everything with her natural power. IMO- A young Midori Ito. Although Midori gets more air in her triple axel and all of her jumps, Mirai has her own beautiful style and grace as well.

    Whether or not she landed it cleanly, these in practice are the best I've seen EXCEPT for Midori (who to this day, I believe had some kind of rocket on her skate). Tonya's leaned heavily and were hideous jumps and landings. Mao's were/are girly and small. This is a truly beautiful triple axel. If she gets it going for the Olympics she could win. The rest of her skating is truly remarkable.

    • @jondavwal13
      @jondavwal13 Před 6 lety +9

      I've seen it. It looks more like Mao's. Very tight in the air, very fast rotation. I prefer Midori's and Mirai's if she could hit it. She rotates more slowly and her position is more open.

    • @rrenatabp
      @rrenatabp Před 6 lety +3

      I actually think rika's has more distance to it than mao's and looks more effortless than mirai's, but i've never seen either of them live so I can't tell if that's an impression or how they actually are haha

    • @jondavwal13
      @jondavwal13 Před 6 lety +7

      Don't get me wrong. It's a beautiful jump. Midori's 3A was hardly effortless but it was the most exciting jump I think I've ever seen (man or woman). Mirai is solid and muscular and not tiny so the jump has a certain excitement and power to it. Kind of like the difference between Boitano and Orser. Orser was effortless and catlike and spun very fast in the air. Boitano muscled his jumps up into the air. I found that more exciting.

    • @rrenatabp
      @rrenatabp Před 6 lety +2

      yeah, I guess it's a question of taste tbh. I've always been more of an orser girl myself and tend to prefer the more effortless kinda of jumps than muscled ones (tho I can see the appeal). I guess we should agree to disagree haha :)
