Pantera - Metal Magic in Studio Raw Recording

  • I was living in Arlington Texas in 1983, near Pantego Sound Studios. My sister went to Bowie High School and was a cheerleader in the same grade as Vince Abbott. I was a slightly younger drummer at another high school and would go to the Bowie football games to watch my sister, but I always ended up sitting next to the Bowie drum line. Vince played snare and we chatted a lot about drumming and music. One day he invited me to the studio to watch him and his brother Darrell record their new album, which didn't have a name at the time, but became Metal Magic. I rode my bike to the studio with my friend, and took my Radio Shack cassette tape recorder. I hit play and recorded over an hour of audio. I wish I would have brought my dad's video camera, but it would have been too intrusive. People weren't used to being recorded with video cameras in those days and I think Jerry (their dad, the producer, who you hear talking a lot) would have shut me down. So instead I just set the tape recorder on a table in the control room and turned it over when the first side ran out. I've had this tape for 40 years and finally decided to post it. I did send it to Vince''s drum tech in 2016, but he told me I was a "scammer" who "obviously stole it", so I don't think Vince ever heard it before he died. In 2019 I also sent it to Terry Glaze, the Pantera singer in 1983. He thanked me and said "Blast from the past!". Other than that, nobody has heard it, other than my friend who came with me, who I think also recorded it. I haven't talked to him in 35 years so I don't know if his tape still exists. I was not a huge Pantera fan in the 90s but was devastated to hear of Darrell's death, and later Vince. They were really good guys when I hung out with them.
    Update: For those wondering, the old Pantego Sound Studios building is still around, at least on google maps:
    www.google.com...
    Another note: I believe this was actually 1982 so Darrell would have been 15 or 16. At the start of the tape he says "Hello there fans ... all around the world ...", he was joking and goofing around. They had a small following in the D/FW area but in the pre-internet era they were basically unknown, so Darrell was trying to pretend he was a big rock star. Little did he know...
    This is the band as I knew them, and how they looked when the recording was made:
    imgur.com/a/un...
    Also - At roughly 10:00, you hear Darrell telling Vince his drums sound “Killer”. My friend and I had never heard that word used in that way, and we were cracking up every time Darrell said it. We walked around saying “Killer…Killer…” at school for the next few months lol.

      That's awesome. I had the original casette tape in my drawer for 40 years. Responded to a comment in a thread and people started asking for proof. I posted a short clip and then people started asking for the whole thing, so I decided to post it. I think I waited so long out of respect for the Abbott brothers and their dad Jerry, who probably didn't know he was being recorded. I tried getting the tape to Vince but his manager accused me of stealing it.
      Here's the reddit thread that led to the posting, if you're interested:

    Amazing tape! Crazy to see that new stuff are being released, just when you think you heard it all. How did you feel when you saw that pantera became huge ? You wrote you weren't the biggest Pantera fan, but must have been funny to think 'hey I used to hang out with those guys before they were famous'

    • @Thalos-yl5wv
      @Thalos-yl5wv  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah it was wild. They were very well known in the Dallas area before they become huge. I honestly didn’t realize how big they were until they the mid 90s when the internet became more accessible. I was really happy for them!

    sounds way heavier than the Metal Magic record....and without Terry's squeaky high vocals.

    • @Thalos-yl5wv
      @Thalos-yl5wv  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah I remember thinking that when the album came out. “Nothin on But the Radio” had a very different feel in the demo tape. Instead of the standard 4/4 groove, Vince played more of a syncopated groove that felt harder and less “pop” to me. When I finally heard the album I was really surprised how different it sounded from what I heard directly with my ears in the studio. But I think Jerry knew what the hell he was going lol.
