    The best part about Stoicism is that you can go to the primary texts, read them and feel like they were written yesterday, not 2000 years ago. You can pick up Seneca, Marcus Aurelius or Epictetus and find the writing fresh as ever. In them, we find the wisdom to help us overcome adversity, find serenity and live well. They contain timeless truths and wisdom for any era.
    But what if you wanted to go deeper? What if you wanted to read commentary and biographies on the practitioners? How did the philosophy develop over the years? What do the critics have to say? How did Stoicism inspire Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy? Or maybe you want to find a fiction book that is inspired by Stoicism? Or just a simple introductory text for beginners?
    In this video Ryan Holiday talks about some of the essential books that you should read about Stoic philosophy.

    I’m on vacation in Milan. Went into a bookstore today and happened upon the English section. It was all Christmas or philosophy books. I was very pleased to see that alongside Nietzsche, Aurelius, Seneca, and Machiavelli, there was a stack of a certain “366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living” - I even took some pictures.
    Well done, Ryan. Truly inspiring 😊

    Love this!! Leaders read. I carry a vintage version Meditations by Marcus Aurelius in the glove box of my car in case of the worst possible "situation". It also offers comfort on those breaks that I allow myself to take while on this path. Having the book in my car is also a great present moment reminder that rarely "the path of least resistance" is part of the divine journey, but instead- "the obstacle is the way" All of the other ones are great as well- they all give a sense of solace in knowing that the "road less traveled" bears more fruit. I would also add the Harvard Press' biography of Metternich as well to this list.

    Hi, Ryan! Thank you for the recos. The first time I heard you was on Spotify podcast and I initially fell in love with Stoicism. I was in my downtime when I heard you. Since I began to have my interest on Stoicism and Marcus Aurelius, everything is starting to feel a little lighter. I used to be a non-reader. Now I recently bought two books (Meditations and Obstacle is the Way) and enjoying reading both. I have one coming, I had it reserved because it's an out of stock item here in our city! It's your The Daily Stoic. The way you delivered the idea of this philosophy is helping me pick myself up.

      @Cococokieful Před 7 měsíci

      This book is really important. It wakes you up from complacency in life (sleepwalking) and shocks you into a sense of urgency and purposefulness - makes you re-examine what you're doing in your life, whether you are spending it wisely or just wasting it until there is "no balance left." You will come to realise that although life is short, nothing truly matters. We exist simply to exist, it is your choice whether you want to lose yourself to externals. And Epictetus adds his view to the paradox of life's purpose: "Since nothing can truly be taken from us, nothing is truly lost." In my view, those who know how to play the game of life, or "any game" will usually draw, but those who know why they play will WIN.

    • @Cococokieful
      @Cococokieful Před 7 měsíci

      @@itsmichaelmai Seneca offers a contrarian view to most conventional message (which is to offer your service to others or help others). He emphasize the importance of being selfish rather than selfless, although you can't begin to be selfish until you waste a large portion of your life away in selfless activities. He also advise us to be resourceful in choosing how we spend our efforts: let our efforts not be in vain, which is hateful, or efforts unworthy of it, which is shameful. This means to be careful in setting goals, make sure it produce great results or it's a terrible waste of life. It’s better to be idle than to be busy doing nothing (like guard dogs). If you like Seneca's philosophy, you can't do without his fellows: Epictetus and Epicurus. Epictetus offers compelling views on what freedom truly is and how we must avoid "attempting impossible tasks." And Epicurus offers insight into the Art of desire, whether certain desire is worth pursuing because of pleasure or pain that is involved. These three philosophers can't do without each other.

    It is possible to write without reading. Example? Simon Sinek.
    But also, like Marcus Aurelius said: "Throw away thy books; no longer distract thyself: it is not allowed..."
    and: "But cast away the thirst after books, that thou mayest not die murmuring, but cheerfully, truly, and from thy heart thankful to the gods."
    and: "No longer wander at hazard; for neither wilt thou read thy own memoirs, nor the acts of the ancient Romans and Hellenes, and the selections from books which thou wast reserving for thy old age."

      I'm a Freemason, and its education and ritual work is what interests me most. I discovered the book 'Meditations' after doing a Google search on the history of the 4 Cardinal Virtues are - and stumbled onto Ryan's channel. Seems to be the 1 book on Stoicism that all seem to know, so I'd suggest starting with that one and going from there. The translation by Gregory Hays seems the go-to version as it comes highly recommended by Ryan, so it's the one I bought multiple copies of (to give away). Ryan truly makes the philosophy much easier to understand as he ties in the wisdom of the ancients to real-life applications.

Criticism: talking to fast, holding books sideways so no one can see them or determine the author of each work, jumping around and swinging your arms is distracting from your words, and finally the transcript does not precisely reveal your exact words and misspells many. Sorry pal to be so critical! All in all, you have all the right stuff coupled with a heart of gold. Your gift of sharing is priceless.

    I am curious, what would you say is the difference between a philosophy and a religion? You quote from books written thousands of years ago and you repeat a set of rules/guidelines that you derive from them.
    This is not meant to be a provocative question. I have watched a number of your videos over the years and have found them very useful in helping to strengthen my mindset to deal with the modern world. So I would really be interested in your response :) thanks

      I think there is definitely a lot of overlap between philosophy and religion. I suppose the simplest way to put it is that philosophy is a set of rules or practices aimed at the self, whereas religion is a set of rules and practices focused on worshipping a god or gods.

    Ryan, what an incredible list. It contains many books I have not read. I will get through a few based on your recommendation.
    I am surprised that you have no authors who are women on your list. Surely this population has written books that warrant inclusion on a list alongside the male greats.
    I studied philosophy at a military academy and therefore in a military context. There, they also did not highlight women's works as a matter of course, but more as a special exception that only warranted consideration in isolation. You have done so much work in this space; do you know of any women stoics?

    Thank you as always for your reading suggestions: question, any women stoically? And if so any readings from them?

      Check out his book " Lifes of the Stoics", there he talks about a Stoic woman called Porcia :)

    Its funny that people think a book being smart pretty means having a good life. People that have and maybe more of still dont have a life worth living

      It's not a desire to be first. I just happened to open up the video just after it appeared. That had never happened to me before, so I was surprised.

    I don’t get why he was holding each book up but making it face the side rather than the camera. Only for one or 2 seconds he would turn the book to face the camera so we can jump, pause and get the name. Why torture us? Just make the book visible while you talk about it. I love Rayan work as a writer but he’s horrible at making videos
