- Huge shoutout to JEGS for sponsoring this week's episode! If you're looking for performance upgrades for your build, head over to www.jegs.com and text "S2S" to 36727 to get up to $100 off your order!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When we debuted our Chevy 454 SS OBS shop truck at Shift Culture a little while back, we asked y'all what you thought we should do with this iconic truck. An overwhelming majority of you guys told us "DON'T YOU DARE TAKE OUT THAT BIG BLOCK!" So, we're listening to you guys, and instead of swapping out the stock motor in this Chevy 1500, we're giving it a complete overhaul! Thanks to JEGS, we were able to get everything we need to push 550 horsepower in just one click! We can't just install this RPM Power Pack kit without getting a baseline for our truck though. So we took the 454 over to our friends at Blow By Racing, stuck the Chevy on the dyno and put down three runs that got us a whopping 186 horsepower! And while that starting number isn't very impressive, what will be are the numbers that come out of this big block chevy once all of our upgrades are done!
We have a lot planned for the 454 SS big block truck! This Chevy is getting a full QA1 suspension, wilwood brakes and a whole ton of other upgrades. So make sure you subscribe to our channel so you don't miss a single episode!

Many people just default to an LS. This was a fun concept, fun to watch it come together. Also, cool that you can modernize an old big block a little. Great content, as awalys!
Thanks so much! Everyone really wanted this 454 to stay a 454 so we wanted to show you guys the best way to do that!
That's exactly what was going through my mind.
I mean you could’ve done an LSX454. I dig keeping it relatively stock but I personally would’ve gone with modern power though.
@@gregkrueger331 sure we could have, but that would have been rather expensive. the idea was not to over spend but make the run and drive been then the stock truck.
@@SalvagetoSavage don’t get me wrong, i like the old school big block way more, you definitely get the cool points for going that way but man, you gotta love what the more modern engines can put down in comparison.
34000 pounds of torque on that first run is impressive
Almost unreal! lol
Was that because the tires were wet?
@@SalvagetoSavage almost
To the wheels
You have a part number
LS/LT’s are awesome sure but man it’s nice to see a BBC build for a change, I’m looking forward to this!
It's definitely nice doing something a little different than we normally do!
man I've been waiting for someone to do one of these old 454 SS's. I'm glad it's you guys.
We're stoked that you're stoked!
That thing's gonna be a monster, can't wait to see what's next from S2S!
She's going to be a real sweet shop truck!
Spend the day on the Autobahn. It`s nice to be home and just have a drink and watch you guys do the things I would love to do.......and have a drink. I am not sad. Thanx. This should be one hour long. Just saying.
Dude i love these trucks. Can not get enough of them. This is going to be a sick build!
A real tire smoker!
Love the info while you guys build for the diy folks. Most channels just do time lapses and skip the technicals
That wouldn't be any fun! We want everyone working on their builds along side us!
Great vid. Definitely needed the 454 to stay. Great content. U guys just keep killing it. Thx.
Thanks so much! We really appreciate the support!
This is going to be rad! Can’t wait to see the new dyno numbers!
Hopefully we put over 450 to those wheels!
Looks a lot like the SS454I was always eyeballing in that storage lot in Largo. Then one day it was gone. Hopefully it is the same one and getting reborn as a ripper! Glad u guys kept the big block, hopefully u will keep the patina too, it’s so well earned in our S Florida sun.
This one came from our friends out of state! Would have been a lot less driving if we got one down in Largo!
Nice to see the OBS love, my favorite truck. Never cared for this 454 engine but its cool that you kept it in the SS, a LS swap wouldn't seem right.
There are so many trucks we could buy without running motors that we can drop an LS in. This thing has the 454 stickers on the bed, so we wanted to keep that 454 under the hood!
I just love the wheels on this truck. The plain black discs with the red stripe are badass.
They just got sold! We have a nice new set coming for this truck though!
Cool build. The static compression ratio is more like 8:1...Im already making excuses for the next dyno pull. lol. I like that you took the heads off the smart way and left all the rockers you could tight so the valve springs will lift the heads off for you.
I'm glad to see that you are keeping the "Fo Fittie Fo" true to its name.
Had to brother, probably spending more then if we were to swap it but at the end of the day it will be worth more money this way
I guess that I never really noticed how bad ass your shop looks. Someone who is super talented has spent a lot of time making the shop awesome 👍
That's all Mikey!
Looks like fun guys!! Thank you for more great content. How hard is it to rewire the engine, and get everything to work properly. The electrical is the intimidating part of all of these builds.
That's why a lot of the time we go ahead and just replace the entire harness. We'll make sure to show y'all how we plan on tackling that part of this build!
@Salvage to Savage sweet thank you
Great video! Can't wait to see the complete build. Please do some detail on how to eliminate the computer and the wiring also!
We'll make sure to go over all our wiring when we go ahead and plop this bad boy back in the truck!
The kind of video I was looking for. Build on 454
Hope you like the build so far!
gonna be one sweet shop truck, hell I'd be happy with it stock as a daily driver.
We're just hoping it'll still have tread on the tires after a week of Mikey driving it!
Loving it already. Will be stoked to see the suspension video with the qa1 parts
It's a really cool set up we got! Can't wait to show y'all the suspension!
JEGS ❤❤❤❤
Good call on pulling the engine. You were 80% of the way there anyway. I've used a lot of Edelbrock components over the years for daily drivers. Always been impressed with what they have. My only advice for you guys, please do something with that rear diff. They have a tendency to dismantle themselves. That should make a good shop truck. Can't wait to see what kind of numbers you get on the dyno. Very good guys.
It's definitely going to help having the motor out once we start on all the suspension work too!
You realize, if this truck still has the stock rear diff, it’s a 14 bolt right?
My OCD wouldn't let put all that new stuff on that short block 😂 it's mandatory it comes out and gets cleaned and rebuilt, possibly even a bore and rotating assembly but without a doubt cleaned and new rings and bearings
I'm so glad yall pulled it out first lol
Factory big block tire roaster, perfect candidate for WAY more Horse Power .. Nice shop truck!!
Thank you!
Love it !! This channel should have more followers!
It’s a slow climb brother. Lol
My first video and I’m super impressed I instantly subscribed and looking forward to great content
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel. We hope you like the builds!
It's refreshing to save the big block cause it's just different than a 5.3 which is great but just the name 454 adds value and says "I'm Different"..I stand out in a crowd
Even with the power it makes, having that original 454 in there definitely makes it a bit more special!
we need more episodes per week from you guys :)
We're workin on getting you guys some extra content!
Love the Chevy big block build. I daily an 8.1.
Awesome!
Im all for some OBS content !!!❤
Gotta love these OBS's!
It seems like this thing will be a monster sleeper when you are done with it. Nice 🤙🤙🤙
Might not be a “sleeper” but should be a riper
you should know its never just a few addons .... its a trap , every time 🤣😂
And we keep taking the bait! lol
Hell ya looking forward to this one. Jealous of time stamps, cause I go to work on my 61’ and 6 hours later only finish 2-3 items on the punch list! Lol
You need to come down here and start drinking that cuban coffee! lol
Love these trucks, juiced you guys went with the original engine. These trucks are bringing some serious $$ these days.
They're definitely a pretty penny! That's why we wanted to keep it as OG as possible!
Very interesting project, congratulations 🤗👍👌
Thank you!!
youre supposed to tighten the rocker arm down slowly as you rotate the pushrod and stop when you begin to feel resistance on the pushrod. and do it to ever cylinder 90 degrees from tdc for that piston
Nice build and this truck is gonna be crazy. I just picked one up on a super good deal and can't wait to dive in and build mine!
Awesome! These trucks are fetching a pretty good price right now. Congrats on the new ride!
@@SalvagetoSavage I got mine for a steal! I’m gonna build mine to drive. I can’t wait to see how awesome yours comes out when it’s all done.
I'm ready for the next video. Great job.
We got a QA 1 suspension going in next while we wait for some more of our Holley stuff to come in!
My all time favorite truck
Can't beat these 454ss!
They are called Headers homie! HEADERS!!!!
Looking forward to more magic from S2S
Glad to have you on board!
I almost had a coronary when y'all painted the block without taping it off 😂
You aren’t kidding. Machined surface? Nah let’s just spray paint over it. 🤦🏻♂️
You shouldve put that motor and trans on a pallet.A little crazy taking it down that far and not doing the shortblock to handle 500horse.Just some thoughts from eyes outside on the sidewalk. 🙂
I bet this Big Block is going to sound rowdy. Old school.
We are so stoked for this build!
Old school cool! Thanks Mike and Andrew, so it’s not mandatory to drop an LS into everything?
The suspension will be awesome!
We are just as surprised as you! lol
I always forget just how bad things were with engines being strangled in the 80s and 90s until you see 454 cubes not even making 200 at the wheel. A K&N, a cat-back and a little tweak to the ECU and I'm putting down 200 at the wheel from a Civic Si.
Auto tech has really come a long way since these 454s were being pumped out!
Hi just to let you know you tube isn't notifying me of your uploads I don't know why but maybe it's happing with other subscribers. Great content as always guys 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Thanks so much for the heads up! We'll definitely look into that!
MASSIVE!!!
Are you talking about our Pre-motor build horsepower numbers? lol!
I am glad you stuck to the big block! Those rear tires don't stand a chance!!
We're going to get a spare set ordered before the motor even goes back in! lol
I think i want to put a 454 in my 95’ over an ls JUST to save time and for reliability. Glad im seeing these videos at perfect timing before spending money 😭😭🤣
They can make some big power if you want to spend some money on em. But these older 454s in stock form are very much slugs! lol
One of my dream projects
Definitely a dream truck!
WARNING -Gear Head Porn!
Awesome versatility on this channel, never a dull video. .Chevelle, Godzilla Lincoln, now this 454 Chevy truck! Too Kool For Skool! Great videos & content guys, keep them coming!
Thanks so much for the support! We're stoked you like the content!
Something funny for you. Keep up the good work 👍
My dream truck
I need my obs to get this love!
Ahhh man needed this ty for the content and knowledge ❤🔥💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Thanks for watching and thanks for the support! Glad you liked the video!
Ended up takin the motor out 😂
Now your speaking my language bro 😮❤
Should get a 70’s model Holden those cars are badass bro
A holden would be sick!
This is better than the cyber truck.
Great build guys 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Always wanted one of these. Had a friend that had one when he was n the navy till someone stole it off base.
Noooo! That's the worst!
Seeing that truck on the dyno reminded me of the '93 Chevy 3500 that I used to have. I was excited when i got it since it had a 454 in it. I was pretty disappointed with it. That truck was a dog but it sure did like to suck down gas!
Yes she’s very thirsty, let’s hope these parts will wake her up a little. It will definitely smoke tires and sound great
Beast!!!!
Kills me. My 2017 civic turbo is 175hp out of the box. Love the OBGs
It's crazy how much auto tech has changed through the years. It's definitely apparent when you put old "muscle trucks" like these on the Dyno!
Beautiful 😍
She's definitely our little ripper!
Awesome video 👊
Thank you!
454 SS 🏁
Hope u guys did a beed of silicone on the front and rear of the intake manifold
Didn’t see anything on the block surface before setting the intake down….
I was surprised at the lack of power the original 454 put down. Can’t wait to see what the new build Dyno’s
Big block, small number! lol This powerpack kit should definitely help!
They only had like 250hp new, they made up for it in torque though
Less than a ford fusion😂😂😂😂
sweet.
Thanks!
Exactly the way should of been from factory, cool easy fun project 👌🏼
small correction to setting valve lash, Andrew said open on both valves, but its actually Exhaust Open and Intake Closing
Thanks for the correction! Sometimes we make some slip ups when trying to vlog and work at the same time!
@@SalvagetoSavage understood which is why I tried to be polite but inform.
Man I wish I could get you guys to work on my ecoboost mustang.
Do you want to put a big block in it? lol
@@SalvagetoSavage lol. That would be sweet. Put in a 460 and start doing wheelies!
How you know push rod length, change heads rocket arms cam, / change rod cracks bears check rings,
That is a great project for the shop truck! I’m putting a QA-1 front suspension on the 68’ charger I’m rebuilding currently. Can’t wait to see the finished deal. Taking the front clip off is the way to go, the amount of time it takes more than makes up for being able to do all this work error free with the room to do it. 👍 What’s your guess on the HP add? 93k miles is nothing for that lower end.
We're pretty excited about the QA1 set up we got for this truck! We're pretty hopeful we'll get close to the projected numbers. 550 crank should make around 450 wheel roughly! We'll see though!
🔥
Very nice performance cars... lol 😊👍😁🎵😎
Glad you like it!
I think they advertised 205 or 230 horsepower in 1992. That was probably at the crank
It was about 230 crank horsepower. So we're not really all too far off on a 454 with 90k miles putting down 186 to the wheels!
Nice looking SS except for the wheels?
Was it a number matching block
Any tips on where to find obs interior parts? Mainly a complete dash?
We talk about that a bit in our dash restoration episode (episode 4)
I bet it would make something really close to 600 hp if you put some dome pistons on it
Crank hp btw*
As soon as I saw the title I clicked
Hope you liked the video!
Paint on the engine deck "no big deal" 😂
Sick build!!! Where'd you get those wheeles from!?
Detroit, mob steel
180s hp from a stock 454 😮 is that right 😆 had to be a little low from wear and tear or something, 350s giving more then that 🤔
It's really not too far off from the numbers Chevy reported from the factory. I think we're just so used to modern engine performance we forgot what slugs these motors were when they were bone stock!
what is the duration of the cam at .050 lift? the lift doesn't tell us much as far as performance goes?
🤔I'm going to learn well. 😄😊👍😎korea
We love to hear that! Enjoy the video!
Going to need the turbo to hit that 550hp. Need to chop the roof about 3 inches to make it sick!!
That's 550 crank. We should be able to get pretty close going NA!
@@SalvagetoSavage Gotcha. Cool, That would be interesting to see. Chop that top though!! I know it is not so easy and your dime and time are limited. But that would be sweet.
@@benscott1872 absolutely not. Chopped tops are hideous on anything other than old Chevy 210’s and Mercs
We’re you able to reuse the stock length pushrods, as well as center up the roller tip on the valve stem with no issues? I’ve heard BBC have issues centering the rockers on the stem with the guide plates.
Awesome video! Thanks!
We got new pushrods with the kit!
Man that truck isn't making what I thought it would be with a 454. 180 horse after three runs puts it on par with my rebuilt 2.5L n/a Subaru flat four. I feel the 454's should be putting out over 400hp imo
Crank numbers on a fresh/stock 454 are 250 hp and 380 torque!
not an experience engine builder by all means, but I am confused about how you are getting 9.5:1CR. I just finished my 85 block 454. stock deck(.020 below deck), true flat top pistons(looks like those had a little center dish. and a metal .020 compressed head gasket. 115cc combustion chamber. that calculation only gets me to 8.6:1. mild cam, engine runs great, fun and reliable feeling. would like to dyno it, but we will see.
My 350tbi on my 91 obs just went out and im looking to swap a 454 big block into it what harness should i use ?
Great video love it!! Just crazy how my stock Gen 3 coyote makes the same power with just exhaust, intake manifold and E85 tune it’s at 473 WHP. Has a lot more room still need headers, ported manifold, CAI, then after that boost
Two different things.
Great job awesome but I have a question where is Tim I didn't see him in the video
He's been gone for a while
Why
I don’t know to many people that can drop 5k on heads and intake….turbo and giver the beans
Doesn’t those head bolts need sealant on threads? Maybe I missed it?
A lot of the stuff was either lubed or coated with sealant off camera! We try to balance the work aspect and the filming aspect as much as possible, and sometimes that means not every step gets shown!
😊cool good!😎
