- Part two of Barbara Jordan's historic Democratic National Convention keynote speech in 1976. Jordan made history by being the first African American woman to deliver keynote speeches at a Democratic National Convention.
My dad, born in 1916, white, and a WWII veteran, called me into the room when Barbara Jordan spoke. He told me that this woman was the smartest person on the national stage and that she should be president. He believed that she would someday be just that and he wanted to see that happen. I wish that she could have lived to reach that goal that my father set for her and I am thankful for my dad who taught me to listen to every voice and to champion the exceptional ones. Barbara Jordan was truly exceptional as was my dad who made me listen to her.
I remember watching her on TV as she gave this speech. I can still remember how much respect I felt about this incredible woman. I still do. After she had finished speaking, one of the news people covering the convention said, “If god had a voice, it would sound like Barbra Jordan’s.” I am just one of thousands who still love and respect this great woman. Thank you for sharing this.

In 1976, I was 6 years old. I remember sitting in front of the television set and watching this foreign "show" on TV. When Barbara Jordan stepped up to the microphone and started speaking, while I didn't understand all the words, something inside of me began to swell up. This woman was speaking so powerfully and honestly, I felt inspired and lifted at the same time. Here, a little short white girl living in Los Angeles, became a Democrat because I wanted those things to happen. I wanted everyone to be treated with equality and with respect. This woman and this speech inspired my life as did Shirley Chisholm, Jimmy Carter, Ann Richards, and Barbara Lee. Thank you so much for showing this. I remember it so well!

Gwen Ifill was remembered today on PBS on the one year anniversary of her passing.
They showed an interview of hers with a colleague reporter. In it she mentioned how Barbara Jordan DNC address inspired her greatly.
This is my first time hearing her speech (parts 1, 2, 3) and it is so sad that the points she makes that are to revere or improve are still issues of 2017. When will we improve for the good of all the people?

Reagan, Bush 41 & 43, their Supreme Court appointees, and their decision, “Citizens United” (could a SCOTUS decision possibly be more inappropriately named?!) and the resulting destruction of truly free and open political discourse by unlimited influence imposed upon the work of the people’s government by mega-wealthy corporations and individuals.

What we have to do is strike a balance between the idea that government should do everything and the idea, the belief, that government ought to do nothing. Strike a balance.
Let there be no illusions about the difficulty of forming this kind of a national community. It's tough, difficult, not easy. But a spirit of harmony will survive in America only if each of us remembers that we share a common destiny; if each of us remembers, when self-interest and bitterness seem to prevail, that we share a common destiny.
I have confidence that we can form this kind of national community.
I have confidence that the Democratic Party can lead the way.
I have that confidence.
We cannot improve on the system of government handed down to us by the founders of the Republic. There is no way to improve upon that. But what we can do is to find new ways to implement that system and realize our destiny.
Now I began this speech by commenting to you on the uniqueness of a Barbara Jordan making a keynote address. Well I am going to close my speech by quoting a Republican President and I ask you that as you listen to these words of Abraham Lincoln, relate them to the concept of a national community in which every last one of us participates:
"As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master." This -- This -- "This expresses my idea of Democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no Democracy."
