Ralf Rangnick started as a player manager, but quickly became a sought after manager in the 1990s in Germany. Rangnick is credited with developing one of the most-used tactics in football: gegenpressing. Popularized by the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp. Rangnick has since moved toward a more sporting director type of role, helping shape RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg, as well as Hoffenheim in the past. Now, Ralf Rangnick is linked with Manchester United as a potential manager, and later, as a club director. And now, it's looking like Manchester United have signed Ralf Rangnick.

In germany we all know this guy is amazing and can change the whole club.
The problem with rangnick is that he wants absolute power and he wants to make all the decisions. That sounds like a good thing and it is, but the problem for the Management of a Club is that rangnick is not afraid to tell the guys who signed him after a few weeks: your work over the last years was trash, you should be sacked.
In other words he is the opposite of Ole.
This. He would be perfect for Salford, wanting to go to the Premiership. He would be institutional chaos in any established club that isn't willing to hand dictatorial controls to him for the life of a contract. And no one in the Premiership is going to do that.
@@shawngillogly6873 yeah but look at United, rangnick is exactly what they need. They dont want to sign him because he will call out all there bs and the glazers. He would want woodward gone after talking 5 minutes with him. He would no doubt win the league with them in 3-5 years, but the club would look totally different under his Management and the Main priority would not be profit for the glazers anymore
@@siiir1322 oh, I agree he's exactly the medicine a host of clubs, including ManU, need. But he doesn't need the headache of clearing house anymore.
@@shawngillogly6873 ah yes you forgot leicester city and leeds united.
Rangnick just being German, that's why 🤣
Who's here after united hire him as a boss
Me, delighted with this appointment.
My nigga😭
I am. But I also knew about ragnick from before this.
Just wanted to be real and like your comment coz im here watching this after his man utd appointment
@@savastian_saul same bro, big things are coming for United
Yep, I’m so excited for our future with him at the helm!
Finally a mention of Wolfgang Frank. The older folk tend to always say he had more of an influence on Klopp rather than Ragnick.
I did a video on him!
Wolfgang Frank is a manager legend of my home club Mainz 05. Recently the new training facilities were named after him. His tactics were revelutionary in German football since he adopted the back four from AC Milan and made them successful in the second Bundesliga. So he definetly was the first manager to apply the basics of modern gegenpress in professional football.
Ironically the manager who puts gegenpress to the grave right now is also coming from Mainz 05 - Thomas Tuchel. 3-4-1-2 - nothing more to add...
@@RabonaTV yes you did Adrian and it was very informative. Per adventure, do you feel like doing one on Marcelo Gallardo?
I think even Klopp named him as his key influence as well, rather than Rangnick. It was for a Sky Sports analysis.

Father of German Gegenpressing. Godfather of Julian Nagelsmaan , Tuchel and Klopp
While at Utd. he ain't no godfather.
Father of shit more like.
I am extremely excited to see him with us! Cannot wait to see what the future holds for us.
The amount of people calling on Ralf Rangnick to be hired as a stop gap manager for Newcastle blew my mind.
Rangnick is footballing royalty. Once he arrives you keep him for as long as you can.
Hes here🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾💯🔥
The opposite is about to happen tho.
The only reason this man hasn't been at any of the big clubs, its because they don't have the infrastructure that this man requires and are unwilling to work it out with him but, as proven the clubs that are willing to work with him fundamentally have become successful.
@D HJ The reason he hasn't been at big clubs is because he isn't very good.
I remember when my club AC Milan was heavily liked with him and was almost done for him to go here, but then Pioli started to make magic out of the Milan players and because of that Ragnick never came
United got him. What a great video.
Here right man got the united job can’t wait for this
Rip ingles
As a Man Utd fan, he'd be perfect for us. But the board doesn't know that.
It's pretty much irrelevant, as I sincerely doubt he'd want that sort of situation. It's basically the mess he walked into at Schalke on his 2nd stint on steroids. And that nearly finished him in football.
There are superstars in the dressing room who have never played his way. And he'd want them gone. There are egos in the board. He would clash with them. People call Tuchel prickly. But the Professor is brutally honest. Always. And it's 100% his way or the highway.
You were just proven wrong bro
Well well well…
This video now will be at 100k after Manchester United sign him
What I see "Ralf rangnick" what my mind says "Ralf Ragnarok".
Hoffenheims 1:2 loss against Bayern in their first Bundesliga season (2008/09) under Rangnick is still my favorite football match of all time. I have seen better games before and since, but the intensity I felt watching it is unmatched to this day.
Everything Ragnick touches turns into gold, every club he managed got sucessful because of him!
You could say that about Van Gaal and Mourinho as well. Until they came to Man Utd

Adrian there is a book written by Ralph honigstein that i would highly recommend called das reboot. It talks about how german youth academies and the federation reinvented themselves after the 2000 failure at the euros.
Schalke, Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, Lokomotiv Moscow. All improved hugely under him.
If I even become a crypto billionaire and decide to buy a club, he will be the guy I will want to hire.
Adrian!!! We can't wait for so long between 2 videos! We were waiting all week! 😭😭
Murtough & Woodward appointed Ralf after watching Rabona's TV
Man, you really hit the jackpot with the timing of this video. Quality conversation too!
So Rangnick is basically a German version of Marcelo Bielsa
Exactly. Only where Bielsa burns out at a club within 3yrs and has spectacular blowups within weeks sometimes, Rangnick either leaves in a year or stays for a decade.
@@shawngillogly6873 lol very true, I do remember him (Bielsa) quitting a job in Ligue 1 (Lille, I think) within days of being appointed... I sometimes wonder what he could have made of Athletic Bilbao had he stayed there longer 😪
I know too little about Bielsa, but I think Rangnick is more successful. It seems like Bielsa is a genius concerning theory but lacks the pragmatism to win stuff. Kind of like the Anti-Zidane
@@kingkingf I said Bielsa because he too has a laundry list of talented managers whose ideas he has inspired. Guadiola, Pochettino, Gallardo, Emery, Sampaoli, Spalletti, I'm forgetting some others. But also don't forget that Bielsa, like Rangnick, has built some teams that punched way above their weight and only just fell short like Bilbao who came close to winning a league and European cup double. Then also, he put together the Chile team that went on to win back to back Copa America. I see some parallels there with Rangnicks Hoffenheim and with some of his work setting up Leipzig for their current success.
Rangnick - Narrow tactic
Bielsa - uses wide players as focal points
Let's go Adrian! Legend
Hope he Wins in United..🤙🏼
Came here after Rangnick becomes the new manager of Manchester United 🕴️😎
As a Man Utd fan witnessing one of the worst Board room and executives in football, I’m very envious of what he did for the RB group, I’m pretty sure he’s set a blueprint of a modern club.
He’s just created that factory line of players and managers a long that clear and consistent philosophy. For players they can go to Leifering Salzburg Leipzig or come from the academy of NY or Leipzig or be poached from a euro academy (eg nkunku). Managers also have their coaching taught to them by what Rangnick set up and Salzburg has churned out great coach after great coach playing the same way, Rose to Marsch to Jaissle. It’s brilliant and so efficient
This video was a blessing in disguise Lets goo Ragnick to United is about to happen👏
And United fans want him for the rest of the season and said “then go for a proper manager” wtf they talking about, they deserve Ole
Seems they want him for the year then for him to be DOF and choose the next manger and overhaul the team and academy.

@@RabonaTV oh thanks, that's so nice of you, Adrian! :-) have a lovely weekend!!
They wanted to do a Man Utd tactics breakdown but no one knows how Ole plays so they basically forced the club to get Ralf in order for this video to gain traction
I dont even think Ole knows what his tactics are. I dont think that Rangnick will bring miracles in the first 6 months tho. The biggest problem is the Midfield. McTominay and Fred are just not good enough. It will take some time to get the Club were it should be but they need to give him the power to make the major decisions.

Welcome to Man United, Der Professor ! Please fix this shambles of a football club.

United are about to become great again
Genuine Question : If Rangnick is so good why doesn't his CV have bigger clubs the likes of RM or Bayern or City ? Also he has not been able to win the elite competitions, why is that ?
Because he demands to have too much power/too many roles within a single organization - that's why his masterpiece is building up Hoffenheim and RB Salzburg/Leipzig from the ground up, in a sense. Hiring him would mean firing people in other important roles, which isn't an attractive prospect for many clubs.
The man who shaped modern football is Arsene Wenger
Observation haki at its finest.
Turns out the man utd job falls under "exceptional circumstances" 😎
First. Big fan of you
Tuchel's tactics destroyed gegenpress.
3-4-1-2 with fife at the back in defense is really really hard to play against. While attacking, one of the CFs and the AMF move towards the half spaces at the box wich creates a numerical advantage, especially since the full backs hug the touch line and play like wingers. Then you still got three CBs and one dmf at the back that only move backwards when the opponent is on counter attack. They only intercept once the opponent tries to get inside the box... Superb but not apectacular tactics IMO.
Ragnick made Schalke a cl team
Since he left, na u know where Schalke is now 😂
Sorry I’m Dortmund fan I can’t but Lough 🙄
Back to RR
He is brilliant and man United should be smart and give him time
United pls
and we drew against newcastle
Anyone who knows of Rangnick & German football know that he’s done some great work over the years & he will always be held in high regard because of that but those calling for him to be the next Manchester Utd manager are very out of touch. He has vast experience but none of that at a top top club with the expectations like United. I could go on & on why it’s not a suitable match but anyone who has a good knowledge of the world game will understand. Right now there are only a few options to replace Solskjaer as manager & Rangnick is not one of those, he just seems to be the ‘hipsters’ choice
What people are calling for isn't instant success or anything at all , it's for him to take interim untill end of season so united can get top manager like ten hag as top managers aren't willing to leave midseason. And then ralf can be dof couse let's be honest Manchester United needs an actuall football brain and not some banker like ed Woodward
Adrian, you know there is no such thing as an orange card, right?
I like veth
United manager now lol who would've thought

The rolling of the eyes when Manual says 'head coach....manager role in English'....Manual do you understand that in English these are different things and different positions within a club?
The professor
Who’s a united fan?
Best choice since Alex left
Only thing I know about him is that he was linked with AC Milan.
funny how united fans clueless who he is when Ralf Ragnick linked with United lol
English team supporters generally exist in a vacuum
How come Bayern or Real Madrid never hired this guy? And don't get me started on the trophies he's won so far.
It's because he demands a lot of power , he wants to build a club from the ground up . Madrid or Bayern or some of the other big clubs can not give him that much power . Also he's brought success to most of the clubs he's joined , what do you mean by trophies he's won so far ? The clubs he's joined have mostly been mid table , second or third tier clubs and he's brought success to these clubs with little to no money . Only decent club he joined was Leipzig and he got them to the Bundesliga from Germany's fourth division and even Leipzig don't have the kind of money to spend like Madrid , City , Bayern and these big clubs have . I'd say given all he's done he is a pretty successful manager and the perfect fit for United if they hope to be competitive again .
The man who shaped modern football? Or a guy who coached the coaches. Or an interesting man who built two clubs. But the man who built modern football? He was at Barca? Wow. Who knew? At Bayern? Missed that. At Chelsea. Wow! At Real. God what a champion. Has won as much as Bielsa? He must be good. So good, he is in Moscow. He must really be something? How has every big club never appointed him? They must all be idiots!
Honestly moyes has just shown that a patient mid block can crush the gegenpress.
No he didn't. First, Liverpool do not only play a gegenpress style, and often try to hold possession a lot more against "weaker" sides. Liverpool had 70% possession against West Ham. That's hardly the characteristic of a gegenpress side.
Second, and more importantly, every team has an off day. If Moyes can repeat his victory 3 out of 4 times, then he's on to something. Moyes himself said they tried the same strategy last match, and it didn't go well.
West Ham was just better on the day. They deserve all the credit for that, but I'd reserve judgement on the "crushing" of the gegenpress.
@@michaelhettrick8510 just can’t handle moyes’ haggis bon bons
Moyes beat Liverpool because West Ham had everything right. Set piece, transitions, brute strength, pace and teamwork, home advantage, poor Liverpool performance. That is how good you have to be and how favourable conditions to beat Liverpool. It wasn't just down to the midblock otherwise with the number of teams who play that style in Premier League Liverpool would have lost a whole lot more
Noti gang
lol at all the people who had never heard of him calling him the Godfather, man who shaped modern football etc.
Awful.
Would be a good DOF not a manager at United.
He wouldn't be a good DoF for them either, because he'd tear down the existing structure. And the people in the boardroom now won't stand for it.
