      I know right.. Its completely insulting.. They literally could just come to Canada, Wpg in specific and find that there is a huge population of first nation indigenous peoples of many tribes that reside there!! You could literally see and find fullbloods just taking a stroll!! We have gorgeous men and women too!! I know so many!! And have seen so many as well just growing up in Canada.. Idk why they cant cast native actors and actresses for roles.. Hopefully that changes soon though! More of our native youth are becoming more inspired and educated to make something out of themselves now more than ever! Theres just nobody responding to it unfortunately :/ i still see other races depicting us. Yet we are all still here. Anyway. Canada has a steadily growing and concentrated population of First Nations Peoples.. Hope more movies and such can come out and cast real natives some day soon!!

      They may not have had a willing participant. The actual "Pocahontas" (or "Matoaka" as she was actually named) was a little girl when she first met the English. She was kidnapped at approximately 13 years of age. Many Powhatans are not fond of the portrayals of her and may have been offered roles they've rejected. I agree that the people in charge of casting roles should have at least tried to find a Native American teen that could portray her acurately physically speaking.

Some of us even look quite East Asian in our features as many have slanted eyes snd mono-lids. So don’t get into a tizzy when there are Native people who don’t look dark skinned or tanned. It’s like Indians, there are some who are so light skinned they could look Italian or even Southern France. And others who are so dark skinned that they are darker than many African people.

      Thanksgiving is a time of thanks. Plenty of wars and deaths have happened on holidays and every day in fact. So what we are not supposed to live because in history a group of people died. Yes it is sad what happened with tribes of America, but that goes for every war and conquering. We can't mourn all the dead in the world. All we can do is live each day of our lives to their fullest🤷

    • @HopeNazir
      @HopeNazir Před 2 lety

      Actually Thanksgiving still should be.
      There weren't problems with the pilgrims or the natives of that time. The problem started on BOTH sides with the children or Grandchildren (I believe it was the latter).

      History isn't black and white. There really were feasts of generosity from the native people with the white folk. There were of course also feasts of victory after battles against native people. What we participate in today is one of Thankfulness for what we have. It would be much easier to teach if everything was black and white! It is important to teach all sides of history while also understanding when teaching students there is ONLY so much time!

    HIstorical figures for whom little factual information survives suffer the unfortunate fate of being woven into the fantasies and prejudices of this who come after them. Pocahontas deserves to be treated with more dignity than being reduced to a symbol of powerless victimhood, which is how most of the comments here represent her. When I look into the eyes of the only portrait made of her during her lifetime I see a strong and noble woman very much on control of her own destiny. I was born a short distance downstream of her final resting place, and to us she was a hero of noble ancestry who transcended cultures and graced us for a time with her presence. This is what the statue of her in St. Georges's churchyard represents for us, and this is how we will always see her.

    How proud her people would be of her, and how beautifully the spiritual connection helped to keep the peace between the two people. She went on to be a most admired ambassador of her tribe and again, furthered respect between the two nations internationally. She showed the white man that she and her tribe were worthy of respect and admiration. She was a credit to her race.
    I don't know why that isn't celebrated?

    Go to school, or at least learn some proper history.
    It was the President of Oxford that absolutely forbade anyone from taking down some of their racist alumni statues down. You can not rewrite history.
    Yes. Cecil Rhodes was a racist. He also created a railway along a continuous pink strip of land from the Cape Colony to Cairo. He also is know, of course for the Rhodes Scholarship. He left all of his money to the furtherance of education.
    Thank God there are some real historians and intellectuals out there.
    It's called facts vs. feels.
    It's frankly Orwellian.

    As a descendant of a neighboring tribe of the Powhatan, I was quite disappointed with this account of Matoaka's (Pocahontas) contribution. There are significant facts omitted regarding the brutal and cruel treatment that she was forcibly subjected to.

      I think he had ten children from different woman in the tribe. But Pocahontas was his favourite since he was so fond of her mother. Pocahontas reminded him of her mother. Because she was playful. Which is what Pocahontas means. It was her nickname.
