May 18th, 2002. Former IBF Super Featherweight Champion Arturo âThunderâ Gatti takes on âIrishâ Micky Ward in the first chapter of their legendary trilogy where fighters waged war against one another for 30 rounds across a 35 month period.
Prefight records; Gatti 34(28)-5, Ward 37(27)-11.
Going into the fight, Ward had notable wins over Emanuel Augustus & Reggie Green.
On the other hand, the former world champion Gatti had beaten a number of top oppositions such as Joey Gamache, Terron Millett, Gabriel Ruelas, Wilson Rodriguez, Tracy Harris Patterson & Calvin Grove.
For the first 2 rounds, Arturo Gatti effectively utilized movements and his better hand speed to outbox Micky Ward who applied continuous pressure in attempts to cut off the ring against him.
After the half way mark of the 3rd frame, the bout began to turn more and more into a slugfest as Ward was able to close the distance. From this point on, the pace became increasingly furious as both men started to trade bombs till the final bell.
Gatti lost a point in the 4th for a low blow that sent Ward to the canvas. The deduction turned out to be a crucial factor to the outcome of the fight.
From the 5th to 8th rounds, both fighters had nearly equal amount of success as Gatti reverted to boxing on his toes while Wardâs pressure continued to pay dividends.
In the 9th frame, Ward decked Gatti with his patented left to the liver and it looked as though the fight would be over but in an unforgettable display of courage, Gatti not only survived a near knockout but managed to come back strong after rising to his feet from what looked like an inevitable stoppage.
Both fighters connected with a combined total of 110 power punches in the penultimate stanza.
The last round was an explosive finish as both men fought with nothing held back and showed unparalleled will to win. After the final bell, both fighters embraced to to ecstatic ovation of the crowd.
"I am humbled by watching these two guys take the punishment they are taking."
- Larry Merchant
After 30 minutes of unbelievable ebb and flow, Ward was awarded an MD10 with scores of 94-94, 94-93 & 95-94.
Had Gatti not lost a point earlier, the verdict would have been a draw.
6 months later, both fighters collide once again in a highly anticipated rematch.
The 9th round of Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward I was also named as the Round of the year by Ring Magazine.
"This could be the round of the century."
- Emanuel Steward following Round 9.
Both Ring Magazine and the BWAA named Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward I as their Fight of the Year.
"We told you it might be a candidate for fight of the year. We didn't know it might be a candidate for fight of the century."
- Jim Lampley
Please enjoy my highlight of this epic bout from the last decade, and I will be uploading the highlights of their second meeting in a few days so remember to SUBSCRIBE!
Keep your punches up, boxing heads.
I remember watching this live, my jaw was on the floor the entire time. They were both struggling to stand by the end taking turns throwing bombs one after the other. To this day I've never seen a fight this good. The heart displayed by both boxers was one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen in my life.
Watching this live I donât think ANYONE INCLUDING ME EXPECTED THIS TYPE OF LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE
I was in a sportsbook in Vegas and had never heard of either of these two guys. They had the fight on this huge screen, people were going nuts watching it. I agree, never seen anything like it before or since. Astonishing the punishment that both dished out, and took, neither going down.
I was watching with you, what an absolute legendary fight.
Me too. Couldnât believe the heart of these two. Best matchup that Iâve ever seen.
These two guys spoiled boxing forever. There will never be another trilogy that matches the intensity ever again in this sport.
fight of the year ? more like fight of the century
No argument about that
@@Hghar Iâd agree
@@Hghar You maybe right to be honest
that's what Emmanuel Stewart said while commentating this special fight. He also said that it reminded him a vibe n style from the 40s.
Just play me Micky Ward 1 on my TV
Holy Toledo! WHAT. A. FIGHT!! I'm giving them a damn standing ovation & I'm watching this on CZcams!! Fucking Warriors!!
Wierd seeing you here!
Aye it's youđ
Somebody PLEASEEEE call da gotdayum EMTsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
2 punching bags! lol
I come back to this fight before workouts or when I just need a boost. So good!
You know a fight is good when Emmanuel Stewart gets hyped.
GRap TheGOAT also Berto vs Ortiz
Lol fr
@2:47
GO TO THE BODY!
He also lost his mind at the end of Toney - Jirov lol
A fight straight out of the 1950s a throwback of the golden era of the ring.
Saw that fight live. One of the greatest ever. In today's boxing, no referee would had allowed the fight to go all 10 rounds. But, Thank goodness this ref did! RIP Gatti.
I come back to watch this fight once a month and still have goosebumps watching it. Greatest fight ever in my book
I remember the fight like it was yesterday. This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. True grit!
I don't usually watch much boxing đ„ but I'm absolutely astounded by the courage and bravery of these two warriors, I've never seen anything like it. R I P Arturo Gatti đ
Yea but there boxing iq is very low
IDontwork 5 Their boxing IQ is phenomenal. Their just prioritizing offense over defense. Just because their not clinching every 5 seconds like Floyd and 90% of other boxers out there doesnât make them unintelligent. You donât know true boxing if you call this Low IQ. Get in a ring and try to throw these combinations with such fluidity and grace like these men did or find the exact distance needed to throw a precise punch. Youâd damn near kill yourself from the exhaustion alone.
@@idontwork5699 cant box all the time sometimes you gone have to fight
@@shaun5944 Cant've been much in it they took it and handed it out, God rest Irish Micky, and Thunder
End of the 5th round after taking 11 unanswered power punches, Micky Ward bounces off the ropes and throws 21 punches in the last 15 seconds of the round.
Iconic đŻ
Two top professionals at the top of their game. No dancing, no bad mouthing, no elbows, no ear biting just 2 pure professionals. Outstanding quality.
There we definitely low blows tho lmao
Best fight I've seen in my life of 52 years. The friendship between the two, and the trilogy is stuff of legend.
True boxing fans appreciate this fight. Not taking anything away from those who havenât seen or were too young for this fight.
When do you see them clinching? Thatâs unheard of today. They knew what was needed, what the fans wanted to see and what the fight deserved.
You canât train heart. They must have been suffering but refused to clinch as they wanted to show respect
RIP Gatti.
Joe I'm a 66 year old sports fan (who loved boxing) and have seen them all from 1963 until today and NEVER we're there two men who fought with more heart then these two men. Being a born & bred Jersey boy, Gatti was my man but nothing but admiration and respect for Micky Ward!!!
@@michaelbelfer6513 he typed rip Gatti because he is dead for real it was not a joke about the match
@@gabrielecafiero9014 What did he say that made you think he thought it was a joke? Lol
That dude always made his matches a highlight reel,if Justin Gaethje was the highlight of MMA, Gatti was the highlight of boxing.
This trilogy needs no highlights, every second of them are highlights, even the cotner minute
Fight of the century
Absolute masterpiece of a fight. Unbelievable honestly
I watched this at home. And thankfully I was alone because I came to tears during the unforgettable round 9!!!! These two had more than heart!! I had to root for the both of them during the trilogy! And it was the last time boxing was good.
2:46 man this was beautiful
The way he took such shots, shook it off and then came back twice as heard is so special. Both of them are absolute warriors and this should go down as one of the best fights of all time
One of the greatest nights of boxing ever. If your heart is true to the sport... you can not deny the greatness.
This fight was so good I actually shed a tear
me too
Who didnât
Shut up ya pussy. What's with all this crying pish? Millennial wankers.
Wrestling fan? Enough said, pussy.
The best boxing fight of all time in history, i've never seen more than this! This is just insaneâ€ïžâ€ïž
This fight had me going from rooting for Gatti then switching for Ward, absolutely best fight ive ever seen!!
One of the greatest fights all time. I remember at the end you didn't care who won, your investment became in both fighters and the gladiatorial spectacle they provided. Just an incredible experience, and the fact part 2 and 3 lived up to this fight tells you these two were built to battle each other.
đŻ
there aint no boxing fight like this. I think this is the best fight ever in boxing history. period
Ward just kept coming forward. Gatti is like he's not human.Gatti is known for his power and chin. Ward is known for guts and determination. Two legends.
Absolutely. Not many people can take shots like the way Gatti did. Mickey has lots of power, and he was dishing out smashing shots the entire time and Gatti was just taking them like tank. I almost had to fall on my bed just watching the blows they were taking, because it was about to make me pass out :D
"This is the way it has to end" chills each and every time..
2020 and still watching this fight! Sweet science at its finestđđđ
Science???đ€Ł
@@tonya1425 you probably didnât understand the meaning of science in that sentence!
Best fight I've ever seen but that's not sweet science. They didn't move or wanted to dodge anything. That was war.
Ha ha , Patrick , they were fighting in a phone booth, in the end , just swinging hoping something would land, blinded with blood from their cuts.. Cappuccino didn't stop it earlier because he thought he would be murdered.. besides Arturo kept giving offence, which is what the ref is trained to see.. "protect yourself at all times ?" kind of goes down the toilet in a Ward fight..
I don't think Cus Da mato , or Dundee would have been impressed with either fighters defense, I think boxing was out by round five, and full on Brawl was in.. especially after Gatti got stung a few times.. he get's pissed and dangerous.. though both trainers would respect the hearts on these guys.. I'm glad they got their recognition, and respect from the boxing world..
@@planegaper they definitely weren't just throwing and hoping, if you look close enough you can see certain nuances that help them blend their offense into defense, that's why it LOOKS like they're just throwing but they are pretty good defensive wise, not perfect but also not exactly stock still hittable
Gatti was an absolutely beautiful boxer. The style, rythm and accuracy are just beautiful to watch
I believe that Gatti's rhythm in the first 7 rounds was not human, it often has a frightening amount of energy! :) He was too spectacular and generous, I miss this guy too much, RIP Arturo! Great also Ward who was able to resist the onslaught and came out with a great ninth round!
Both real warriors....hats off to both champions.đđđ
I get goosebumps every time I see this fight and not to be to dramatic but sometimes my eyes get watery because there was to legends that night in the building who are no longer with us who have done so much for boxing one way to soon rest easy legends we true boxing fans will never forget you legends R.I.P Arturo Gatti R.I.P Emanuel Steward
Same here, my eyes always gets watery on this fight
Too dramatic. TOO! Is everyone retarded on here?
Too soon too.
I will never get over the combination at 2:47. Iâve seen it 1000 times and it always blows my mind
Ikr! Crowd went crazy!
Even manny steward got hyped for it
lol. I had to repeat it a couple of times myself. It really was something and after taking a beating. unbelievable.
Mickey Ward's combinations 2:47 could even be seen as desperation after Ward was on his knees from the wicked body shot Arturo delivered at 2:07. Great fight by both guys... Ward's punches seemed to have minimum effect on Gatti. It had to make Mickey think, What do I have to hit this guy with?
Advance Case of CTE off that combination alone. Surprised he was still up đł
I'd like to thank the unsung hero of this match, referee Frank Cappuccino, for not stopping this fight. For without you, the greatest boxing match, maybe EVER, might not have been. We salute you.
No fight will ever come close to this in the history of boxing again
Hurd vs mungia would resemble this but they wont make the fights we want these days
Morales vs pacman 1?
the workrate, grit & determination:
1. Ward vs Gatti 1
2. Marciano vs Moore
3. (not applicable)
Pacman marquez 1 and 2 was pretty special, and leonard hearns especially no. 2
And Leonard Duran 1
This is the greatest fight of all-time.
The perfect example of An unstoppable force vs an immovable object
Best trilogy fights I've ever seen.
My son gave me "The Trilogy" on VHS tapes years ago. I'd pretty much begged for it as a Christmas gift. Watching these fights live on TV was mind blowing. Never saw anything like it. I mean, I was crying out of respect. RIP Arturo Gatti. Loved you.
Best fight I ever saw
Ward and gatti s fight are probably the best there's been
Conditioning on both men is unbelievable, hearts of lions no losers in a fight like this just tons of respect!
Watched this again. Just the greatest fight ever in my book
One of the greatest fights of all time, maybe the best. What an advertisement for not only boxing, but what proper tough graft gets you.
Still coming back to watch it again and again just brilliant đ
Fight of the decade.
Every so often I comeback and watch this as well as the other two fights . I think everybody could use a good dose of Gatti vs Ward from time to time
Not fight of the year. Fight of the century!
We was only 2 years into the new century, when this fight took place.
Best trilogy in boxing history in my personal opinion. They went to war thus night and were bound together forever. What they shared in these 3 fights was life altering. Physically and spiritually.
Best trilogy in boxing history in my eyes
What a fight. Pure numbness and will. This is legendary.
Every single punch was a knockout punch. What were these guys made of ??? đđđ

HEART !!!
The beat boxing fight of all time!
Have to give it to the ref! for me this is the best fight ever from start to finish!
I'm here again. Whenever I have a few beers I have to watch this. Its still the greatest fight ever.
Let me get this straight every time you have a few beers you watch the Greatest boxing match ever! So you watch this every single night! I send you my respect in your own way your a champ!
@billyhigh4690 I can only dream of having a drink every single night, but you got one thing right i am a champ, NOT A CHIMP OR A CHUMP. A CHAMP đđđđ
Man i keep coming back to this fight year after year. Simple unreal heart and endurance and chin lol wow just wow......
When real men where Boxers, not track and field athletes..Defenatly fight of the Century.đ„đ„đ„đ„đȘ
Legends never die x
I don't know,I don't remember if I ever sawed any fight more beautiful than this. Is the model of man dignity!
Gatti never got mad when someone punch after the bell...MAD RESPECT FOR HIM!
I think when Mickey hit him a few times when the bell went off mid flurry, Arturo knew Mickey was a solid guy and didn't cheap shot on purpose.. plus Mickey took the low blow with no complaints, and got right back into the fight.. the respect for each other built every round.. neither seemed to really care who won, both are champions after that war..
@@planegaper What? Shortly after the end of round 3, Ward disrespectfully and deliberately pushes Gatti's head away when he's not looking 1:19
Epic fight between 2 warriors
Warriors indeed....who could deny them that tribute?
Best fight I have ever watched. Neither fighter gave an inch!
Exactly 20 years ago from today...and still what a fight to remember!!
Insane that Ward took those punches from Gatti, Gatti had really heavy hands and scored a ton of one punch Kos, Ward ate hundreds of those in this fight without going down once.
Every couple of years when life gets a little stale and I need a blood rush I come back to watch this fight! đȘ RIP Gatti gone but never will be forgotten!
The greatest fight till this day no cap đŻ đȘ đ
That body shot at 2:00 was a pure as the driven snow
Everything that is beautiful about boxing....right here in this fight.
This fight. Round 9 can never be replicated. Their entire trilogy is truly the greatest fights in boxing history.
Pelea de verdad, al estilo antiguo, sin huir ni abrazarse, dos valientes
Pensar que hay quienes dicen que Gatti no era bueno porque no se cubrĂa bien đ€Šââïž
I'll never forget when I was just flipping thru the channels and stopped on HBO and this fight was just starting. Nothing else was on so I figured I'd just watch a few rounds. Boy was I in for a treat.
These guys fought their hearts out
Rocky in real life. amazing heart and courage by these two warriors.
30 mins of non stop action ridiculous that it went the distance.
This is the most amazing fight I remember, both are amazing boxers, most memorable fight in boxing.
This is what we call BOXING! â€
The 3 greatest fights of all time was fought by these 2.
Where did these two find the strength go that hard for that long? Unbelievable fight, both battered and bleeding and still throwing hard and fast right up to the final bell. One of the the best matches ever!
I remember this fight like it was yesterday. After watching this fight it made all ither fights of other fighters boring. These two gave the spectators and fans one hell of a show. Rip gatti.
Supreme slugfest. A show of the fighters will . Both I salute .
One of the greatest fights Iâve ever seen
No expert, but Iâve never seen so many shots on target, pure quality
Dam I miss these fights with these 2 guys! RIP ARTURO GATTI both of these 2 warriors were champions probably would've been Generals had they ever been in any military even in Sparta these 2 would've had statues on a mountain fighting each other or together!
Heavy punches of each other
2:45 - you're done. I'll fire back now. Jesus! all of this for glory.

Good lord, what a fight!
I think I got a concussion just from watching.
Absolutely amazing performance by both men
Every year i come back to this fight...say you, a warrior like this can ever kill himself ever?? NEVER
That hug at the end was beautiful. You will be connected with each other forever after a war like that. They became brothers that night.
One of the most inspiring things youâll ever see in your life.
Not one ounce of quitting in either of these warriors. Granite chins. The best fight i ever saw.
they sure don't make em like they used to
Came here after UFC 300. I am so happy that Dana mentioned about this fight. I still canât believe my eyes and what I have just witnessed.
This is one of the best fights I ever seen . I joined the the army that day it was the fight I wanted to do for My country
