Pokémon GO's BIGGEST Problem in 2024 is NOT What You Think!! Why the Game is Declining!!

  • For the past couple of years, Pokémon GO has been seeing a drastic decline in player sentiment and excitement. Many players will attribute that decline to Niantic's bad decisions, the game being a buggy mess, or how Niantic handles monetization. But the single reason why Pokémon GO is declining is because of something else. Let's talk about it!

Pokémon Go is a 2016 augmented reality (AR) mobile game developed and published by Niantic in collaboration with The Pokémon Company for iOS and Android devices. A part of the Pokémon franchise, the game is the result of a collaboration between Niantic, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. It uses the mobile device GPS to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon, which appear as if they are in the player's real-world location. The game is free to play; it uses a freemium business model and supports in-app purchases for additional in-game items. The game launched with around 150 species of Pokémon, which had increased to around 500 by 2019.
Pokémon Go was released to mixed reviews; critics praised the concept, but criticized technical problems. It was one of the most used and profitable mobile apps in 2016, having been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide by the end of the year. It is credited with popularizing location-based and AR technology, promoting physical activity, and helping local businesses grow due to increased foot traffic. However, it attracted controversy for contributing to accidents and creating public nuisances. Various governments expressed concerns about security, and some countries regulate its use. By early 2019, the game had over a billion global downloads, grossing over $3 billion in revenue. The game also had over 147 million monthly active users as of May 2018.

It’s not the main reason in my opinion.
The main reason I think the game is declining, is that they doubled the price on remote raids. Raiding is an exciting part of the game, being able to help your fellow trainer friend defeat the boss. is exciting. going in a lobby and seeing that other people are supporting you and are paying the game is exciting. When you now go into a lobby and no one is there it’s demoralizing. Makes you feel like no one plays anymore. with no one else playing it’s a boring game.

The Rediscover Kanto event has squashed the regionals. As a veteran player, I am much more interested in the regionals that I cannot get otherwise (Zangoose, Sawk, Heatmor) and the regionals I can get but aren't usually featured (Seviper, Throh, Durant). Returning player.
1.The research events are chores that give limited rewards not worth the grind. I find that I lose more than I gain trying to complete these events (stardust & Daincie)
    2. The good stuff is hidden behind VERY challenging and inaccessibile raids. The fact that 5 star shadow raids cannot be remote passed make them impossible for rural players.
    3. Remote raid nerf is a blatent money grab and put the most fun, exciting, and rewarding aspect of the game behind a pay wall.
    4. Repetitive wild spawns are incredibly boring and not worth the Pokeballs.
Overall, it feels like players are getting less and less for their time, energy, and money than ever before, while also spending more and more. The work-rewarding balance is way off.

Niantic has been doing weird things since the pandemic was over... First the RRP affair, the lack of communication with the player base, the launch of features nobody asked for, the new avatar affair...
And of course the lack of new pokemon or ones in old generations still being missed, like Manaphy, Phione, Arceus, or the majority of the Galar dex

I believe the lack of releases is a factor, but also from their perspective, it feels as they want the community waiting and get hyped up for new upcoming releases, like paradox pokemon and such. From their view, I Think Niantic is trying not to release much at once to keep players playing. It's the way they go with other events and options, plus the nerfings and avatar update that ruin more of the game than anything else honestly.

Then, they buried it with the first half of this year and honestly… I don’t think they’ll recover. The die-yards, myself included, will take a while to peter out, but with Niantic refusing to listen, with them just recycling the same bosses, and with them focusing on stuff we haven’t asked for and ignoring what we DO ask for, they can’t possibly be surprised that people are finally giving up.

For me, if there’s more to do, and less redundant things to do the better :) I hate animations once I’ve watched it for the 1000 time! Biomes could be nice if all released Pokemon were available just based on rarity instead of events. Catching the same thing over and over again means less chances of me going “oh wow” during the week. Raids and gyms battles are fun because there’s way less animations. A lot of the problem is how much Pokémon has hitched their wagon to shiny Pokémon. This game is realistically about strategy and power. Since they decided to make it more of a beauty pageant, players have responded and that's all some people care about now. Appearance does not impact performance in this game but the game has fallen into a rut because now players dont care about events unless they get new Pokémon and/or shiny monsters.

Reworking the mechanics in gbl to be more balanced and less meta reliant ( Locking in auto picks after reaching level 15, switching from a charge move system to a count down timer on strong attacks that increases the count down after said move is used, and introducing a speed stat to ivs that determine how fast a fast move is fired.)

I can see what you're saying, but Niantics HUGE problems is taking the humanity out of its relationship with their player base. They could care little about disabilities, they completely ignore the community on MULTIPLE occurrences, failure to fix crucial issues with pillars in their game (GBL, etc), while being able to jump all over stuff that doesn't matter and is completely innocuous. It could be the whole 'we don't care if your avatar was your friend, here's a new one.' It seems that at every single point, they could give an eff less count. I think we want it to be about these things, but the company is only about money, and when that's simply the driving force, instead of catering to your audience and let them pay your bills, you tell them to lump all of their concerns with AI responses, deaf ears on social media, and a LACK of accountability with their product.
But yes, Pokemon are the issue ... eventually. Great vid count.

At the start I did GBL and got a shiny cobalian from that, then they decided to move legendries to the top tier of wins and you still would get a stupid pollywag. the grab bag of the weekly research was a factor for me as well, I looked forward to doing my daily spin each day to work towards a mon I wanted for good ivs or a shiny chance, but the pool aspect was just another middle finger on Niantic's FU sandwich to the players. The remote raid pass nerf was rather stupid but at the same time understandable, if people can just play from home then they don't get out to move around, maybe they could have fixed that with some sort of research that rewarded a daily remote pass for walking a certain distance or something. I don't know how the recent avatar debacle is impacting trainers leaving the game, I haven't played much for months now (mainly just community days). Pokemon go always seemed to be a game set in it's ways, made more for the developer and not the fans, here's the game here is how you play and if you don't like that there's the door.

And they're not listening to our feedback. There's many things we don't like about this game, and Niantic refuses to understand that and consider changing something that would satisfy us. Most people in the world do not like the avatars except the devs themselves. That's the biggest thing that has triggered many to stop playing the game. I respectfully disagree. I remember when this game used to be nothing but 1st gen, and I was happy. The reason why is because the core gameplay was also better. For example: The gym system was fantastic back then, and it was exciting to take down enemy gyms. Today it's not even a fight, it's just 1shotting enemy pokemon and scrolling through menus for several minutes. That's BORING, and the reward was cut in half! We used to get 100 pokecoins for doing this, now we get 50 and no stardust.
They added PVP and raids, but both are extremely lackluster. PVP feels like rock paper scissors, and not in your favor since we know it uses an algorithm to match people. Raids excluded the rural players, and having most legendries locked to them essentially cut out half the focus of the game from that point on. And I'll be entirely honest, I don't like having so many events they overlap now. Not a fan of fomo sh*t. I enjoyed this game a LOT more when I felt like I could put it down for a week, and not miss out on anything.

from day one Pokémon go was a game with only one goal, to get people outside and socializing with others. The remote raid passes failed because they allowed people to play solo which distracted from Niantic's core play style. Now it's a bit more of a divide between run out for hours and catch things versus spend additional hours on end battling in pvp to rank up esport style, probably the route the game is going. I think the main failure is the lack of value gained from the game versus energy expenditure for many people.

I think one of the things I really don't understand, is how games like Pokemon Unite can have such fun and interesting costumed pokemon, but Pokemon Go's are very tame in comparison more often than not. Just not sure why they can't start adding stuff like this. On top of that, I feel like they could lean on the Shadow versions more as well so as to promote more people to work on completing those pokedexes. Maybe consider breaking out the shiny pokedex into Shinies and Shadow Shinies/Purified Shinies. Just more things to add to longevity of the game.

I pretty much only hunt for shinys at this point, unless I have a specific task to do something....what I think would be cool would a way to increase shiny chances, like the daily incense...make there be some sort of way to get this incense thing...but not too easy...but not as ridiculous as the galarian birds...i gave up on the need to use the daily incense....here nothing great that spawns because of it for me.

I completely agree with You. I cannot recall a meta relevant Pokemon being released…
Just as a game: the last meta relevant new Pokemon is probably Frigibax, I play Pokemon GO every (but I am not a hardcore player…) sofar I have encountered five…
What else did we get? Maybe You can count Annihilape (for PvP) and Clodsire but those are “only” PvP Pokemon…
Larvesta and the other rare egg hatch Pokemon are pay walled and You simply cannot get them either
What was the last meta relevant raid attacker Pokemon newly released into the game and when was that?
I would probably say Kartana, but if I’d ask for a non legendary (non ultra beast…) Pokemon which You can hunt in the wild, which one would You nominate as the latest meta relevant raid attacker?

One thing they don’t realize is that aLOT of us have been playing for 8 YEARS. Meanwhile, our lives have changed to adulting from the carefree days of youth. During the pandemic, we relied on affordable and unlimited remote raids to connect with our global communities so we could still collect those legendaries through raids when our kids went to sleep.
Niantic will NEVER recreate the phenomenon that Pokemon Go was in 2016. But I am sure they have stats on their loyal players who have played since 2016, and we are getting bored. When we all just quit, the game is in big trouble.

Niantic doesnt create, just copy and re-use assets. Their creativity is close to 0, even event pokemons just get a hat or a flower crown.
Shinies is the only thing they can control to keep some of the players.
The biggest issue imo is mainly the selected wild spawns, only the dragon week some months ago was interesting enough, not to mention the Last com days.

It should not cost anything to do it and it should not be timed. I would play more and catch more, even if the spawns wern't that good, if there was a reason. Maybe have different research in the store. You could go to the store and select one you want to do.

People get sick of just waiting to pay for the next cooler looking pokemon. They need to bring some competitive goals back for those that don't like to PvP specifically. It's simple: make gyms pay by the hour/day, then there's actually a reason to try to win over and defend gyms, and build good gym defenders, not just put some silly mon in in hopes that it hangs around a better part of 8 hours before being knocked out. I have some mons in gyms in low population areas for almost a month, while in high pop areas they churn every few hours!

They really need to stop overpromoting Gen 9, as the rest of Gen 8 have yet to make their debut, and it's been 3 years since they were partially released as part of the ultra bonus. Since then, it shows that [Niantic] does not care, and just wants to jump straight to overly focusing on newer generations in this game instead.

Pokémon are finite. They need to get more creative with the current dex, and NOT just costume variants. The card game has EX cards, etc., that effectively make weak cards/mon more useful/relevant. I think expanding on the “badge” system would be awesome. Currently, you can only earn a best buddy badge. Thus shows they have the ability to add value/CP to any pokemon above their max. When they expand player levels past 50, they need to redo how pokemon level up. a badge for a hundo? One for maxing out to level 50? For walking X km as your buddy? etc. It would be AWESOME if one could work to make their Pikachu as relevant in Go as it is in the IP narrative, or whichever Pokemon is your favorite.
