I have lived in Rapid City for over 40 years now. I was in Maine, before coming to SD. SD is a piece of cake compared to ME. Like anything else, you plan a head. I worked on the flightline on the B-52's and B-1's at Ellsworth for over 14 years, before retiring from the base in 97. You dress warm in the winter and use common sense. We have had blizzards here in May, and windchill temps down in the minus 80's. I fell in love with SD, the moment I got here, and this is my forever home now. We also have low taxes, and no state taxes and it is really hard to beat SD for retirement. Once you get past the cold winters, SD is not that bad of a place to live.
I noticed there's no cap on your property taxes. I've seen people who have moved there in the last few years already leaving because the amount their property taxes went up. Why no cap per year?

Spent a winter in Rapid in 53 and loved it. Great school and friendly people. I was a kid from Alabama so how could I not love it. Remember Picnics in the snow at Stockade Lake. Loved the Black Hills and western history.
Wind in the winter is the real problem, layer, prepare, and plan ahead. I grew up on a huge ranch and worked outside in it all the time. So used to it and except for extremes I never minded it.
Snow is the least of your problems in SD. Hail 4 or 5 times during the summer months is more of a deterrent. They don't call it hail alley for nothing.
I agree. I too would like to see some video of the car and roof destroying hail I've heard about in the Black Hills area. Probably #1 on my list of cons as far as moving to RC.
You are not even close to seeing “the worst of the worst” you’ve seen a few mild winters
South Bend is not even close to being able to be as cold as it can get in RC. Usually 20 degrees below zero and 0 for a high for a week to 2 as well
Remember the business he’s in folks
@@sledawgpilotit can be minus -20 all over the Midwest.. some winters are mild, some are more harsh. Same with hail and tornadoes.. I'm by Kansas City, seems the weather is about similar, and easily as unpredictable. Obviously the further north you are, the more chances for snow or having it stick around. 👍
@@pimpdaddysatan we get colder than you, I’ve seen -40, but in western SD it feels better than eastern SD or KC with lower humidity
@@sledawgpilot I'm not that worried about cold weather, when it's super cold most people will be indoors somewhere. The scenery and milder summers are more appealing than Missouri and Kansas. But for the most part they seem alot alike except the forest and mountains, we have that in southern Missouri with the Ozarks, but its not the same. Black hills looks way cooler
I live in north east Minnesota - your winters sound wonderful lol
Piece of cake. I was actually hoping for more. I'm considering moving to SD
Moving from Sioux City IA i wanted to see the weather, i was thinking omg its ganna be worse lol if thats bad ill take it!
appreciate you!
Appreciate you 👍💯
Where I live, that´s not even called a winterstorm, that´s just a normal day in november 😀
But I live on the same latitude as for example the borders between BC and Yukon in Canada 😬
Thank you Christian for this weather info. You always do a great job! May you & your wife have a Blessed Christmas. 🤗
I hope to move to rapid city in the future. I'm in Ky and you are right about the winters here. I love snow and the people are so nice there.
Thank you Christain…thinking of moving there😊
Watching your footage I could most likely handle winters in SD. I’m an Alaskan resident. December 2022 in a period of 3 days we got 3.5 ft of snow. We didn’t shut down the city- it was hit or miss if you can make it into work. In your video that’s a typical day for me not being shutdown.
Not any worse than New York ! Stay warm....
It's definitely worse than New York lol
Overall that looks pretty tame compared to what i have lived through. My concern is how much road chemicals do they use? Our vehicles are destroyed by aggressive overuse of road chemicals.
I was going to drive to Colorado Springs, then Cheynne Wyoming, then Rapid City & Mount Rushmore the first week of November for vacation & a little snow experience but if it storms this bad then I'll just wait until late Spring
Aberdeen is so much worse than Rapid winter wise, considering moving to Rapid for one of those reasons!
Why is Aberdeen worse? Is it colder and more windy? I lived in Brookings for 3 years in the 1970s. I remember some days walking to school when it was -30 degrees. I don’t remember wind, though.
Great Plains = W I N D Y ! ! ! !
Seems about like Nebraska which is where I'm from considering RC though
Today, currently in Rapid City as I type this, it is -18 deg and with the wind chill says “feels like -45 deg”
I know ppl acclimatize, so how does it feel to you, currently in Rapid City.
Jim Cantori of RC!
How much snow has to fall to shutdown the city?
Hello Christian. My wife and I are trying to move out there for a better life for our children. Currently we are unfortunately in California and we want out. Are we able to talk to you about the way of life out there and the cost of living. Please let me know if we can talk for a little bit. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Yeah Todd, give me a shout anytime! 605-941-2215
@@LifeInRapidCity Hello Christian! May I call you as well? Got got got to get away from Colorado…
Good to know. Thanks
This video would be better if you looked at the camera instead of the monitor.
I think there is a chance we live in the same neighborhood I’m not really sure yet
I live in Copperfield
@@LifeInRapidCity I knew I recognized that ford bronco from somewhere we live in the same neighborhood
It’s cool we live in the same neighborhood I live on Summerfield
Great city!! Lets keep the liberals out!!
It looks like everyone has a truck.
It gets WAY worse than this lmao
Please talk about the wind. I believe that is the bigger concern.
Can you get by without a car
Skateboard with balloon studded tires maybe. Just a thought 😮
