Wow! Here it is April 6th 2024 and I just heard Willie Nelson's song "old timer" for the first time in my life and I cried almost after every sentence he sang. I guess for Willie but most of these tears are because this song hits so close to home for me that it was like I heard part of my life story. I never been so touched in my heart the first time I heard a song. This one is mine. I know it's Willie's in reality but him and God are telling me something and I need to listen this time

Several years ago I took my granddaughter to see and hear his show at Branson MO. She didn’t know how great he was at that time I got a bandanna there for her, her choice, and an 8 + 10 photo. We were so lucky to get his autograph on them both. She is grown and married with children and I believe she loves Willy now and will always remember the night she and I met him! So will I! I’m for certain an “old timer” myself now! I don’t remember when this happened. Lol Willie was awesome! His voice is so unique and beautiful! Happy I got to see him and talk with him!
My brother passed away about 4 years ago. I had the CD with a Horse named music on it. So reminded me of him. He should have been born years earlier. Watching this little bar gathering hole reminds me so much of him. His heroes Gene Surrey and we would laugh at how fast he could ride. Lol Roy and Dale. All the old timers. I sure he's had a chance to run into them. You were my first country music man and will be to the end. Biggest mistake was not seeing you but you didn't come north often. I get the same feeling as you. I'm older too and, like you, I think it has to do with age. I like the idea that Willie is preparing himself and all those many fans who love him for the eventual transition. I first saw him play when I was 20 and I will be 66 soon. I've been lucky to see Willie many, many times live. I hope I can see him again and again.
Being older has nothing to do with understanding words... I'm 29 and his recent songs are clearly about 'the end is nigh'. Sad but brave topic to sing about. He really is a legend.

I cried when I first heard this I love willie my grandma loved him this reminds me of her cause she kidded around about age she got cancer and passed last august she was just 70 years young

I'm 14 as well and I still remember driving with my grandpa before he passed flying down the highway will willie blasting and him singing along. So in my head I can hear him singing something like this!!!

Hard to believe with him smoking and with all the weed he's smoked in his life, alcohol consumption, and not to mention his age that his voice is still golden. I don't think I've ever used that word to describe anything at all, nevermind a voice, but it definitely applies to good ole Willie. I was around 10 when I first heard him on my parents' stereo, It was the Stardust album on 8-Track. I'm closing in on 50 now, my musical taste had shifted to predominantly rock when I was around 12 or 13, and all these years later I still like to listen to him, although I prefer some of his earlier stuff like Shotgun Willie, The Redheaded Stranger(probably my favorite), Wanted! The Outlaws, Stardust, and The Highwaymen collaboration albums.
His sound always 's been awesome - both as a singer and a musician. I have been deeply appreciating him since '77 when his first chords came to my ears. I recall it was "Hello Walls"...
Truly a living legend.

I used to listen to Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, etc. when I was a boy. My grandmother used to have a collection of LP records of music of pretty much every genre, from Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Miles Davis, some Elvis Presley. Although they're all great singers, my favourites were Willie, Waylon, Merle, and Johnny Cash.
I agree. When Willie goes it will be the end of an era. An era of music about the realities of life. Like most of the Texas artist .and as Townes Van Zander said....”it was for the sake of the Song” . I was listening to “Willie and Waylon and the Boys” in the early 70s. In late 70s a buddy gave me 2 LPs. I’d never heard of them at the time. It was TVZs “Flying Shoes” and Guy Clark’s “Old No. 1”..Then John Prine and Robert Earl Keen Jr. And several others. I was able to avoid the “Disco Era” completely, my library filled with music that was real..50 years later, Guy, John Prine, Waylon, Jerry Jeff Walker and Townes Van Zandt are all gone...but the music plays on...because for these guys, it was all about the song...
