- This is a tour of the tent I have designed and made. my old tent was at the end of its life and I could not find a tent with all the features I wanted. This is the first time I have tried to make a tent.
The next video will explain how I designed a built the tent
I love how you made this tent, but I especially love the self support option. That is a really smart idea.
Love that you came up with the head and foot poles well before zpacks did in their dupleXL. Great work.
Thanks Matthew. It was funny seeing them apply the same thing. It makes a big difference.
Nice tent, but honestly I was more in awe of the gorgeous landscape behind you. Looks like a nice place to be quarantined.
Yes I am lucky to be surrounded by farmland. My run route takes me up the hills you can see and I get views of the ocean and endless rolling hills of grass and trees.
That’s dope. You rock.
Thanks
keren banget, bagus, sangat menginspirasi, sebelumnya saya ada kendala karena tiang yang diatas suka bergeser/pindah setelah liat video ini jadi bisa modif lagi kekurangan tenda saya, TERIMA KASIH mbak
Hai. saya senang Anda merasa terbantu. trails bahagia.
Wow, great tent. Lots of thoughtful features. I'm making one like it soon. Thanks!!!
Glad it was helpful
Are you sure you don't own a secretive tent factory tucked away in Hobot Land. Brillant bit of kit you've turned out there, very professional.
Ha ha. Nope, just me on my budget home sewing machine. Thanks for the compliment.
That is a brilliant design for your tent! You’ve thought of everything. It really inspires me to tackle a tent project myself, and I can’t wait for your next video! You bring such a wealth of information and experience to the hiking community, and really give back. Thank you so much!
Thanks TJ. Yes have a go. It was harder than the pack but still not as difficult as I was expecting. Hopefully my next video will help so you can learn from my stuff ups.
Beautiful great job!
Thanks
WOW! That is crazy impressive!
Nice works!
Brilliant!
Thanks Elisa
Congrats, great tent and amazing details!!
Thanks Alberto
I am so impressed, great work!
Thanks Brenda
Very nicely made! Like a single person duplex, with many of your personal customizations. Great job!
Thanks Lyubo
Wow, Great Job. Loved your PCT videos.
Thanks Warren
Wow Homemade! Absolutely amazing tent. Looking forward to seeing the next video on how you designed and made it.
Thanks Nadine
You thought of everything!
Inspirational design and I even like the color 🙂
Thanks Susan. I wasn't sure about the floor colour but it has grown on me.
Wow amazing!
Thanks!
Amazing.
Thanks Barbara
I really like the small vents at the top of the tent. Good idea.
Thanks Tandy. I am looking forward to having condensation conditions to see if they work
Brilliant design and features! I have dreams of making my own tent and yours is an inspiration.
Thanks Doug. I strongly encourage you to have a go. Surprisingly it is not as hard as you think and having a custom tent is really neat.
Amazing the attention to details. It will be great to have downloadable sewing patterns
Thanks. I will be putting the patterns in the next video as well as material list, cost and suppliers. I will also upload to my webpage.
@@RestlessKiwiHiker super, thank you very much
Excelent!
ZPacks watch out!... great video with lots of feature ideas that could be added to other tents. I really like the end pegs!
Thanks Stephen. Yes the end poles make a big difference in foot room
@@RestlessKiwiHiker Also your PCT Sierra Pass Routes should be required viewing! Nice job 👍
very cool! love the small poles on the ends!
Thanks. The poles make a big difference in foot room
Ellen Thankyou so much! Amazing ingenuity and work. I’m going to be doing a plexamid copycat soon and your videos inspire and inform. Happy trails love!! 🏕 🌞
I am glaad you found it helpful. Good luck with your own tent.
Good job. That is a nice tent. And I like the pole at the foot and head. Thanks for sharing. Blessings and safe adventures.
Thanks Vickie
Very impressive on all the features you designed into the tent. Great job
Thanks Wendy
Outstanding features, design, and craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Skye
Brilliant and beautiful! Congratulations! You are amazing! It's perfect. I would buy one in a second ( no sewing machine any more I'm 70 now, still solo in eastern sierra nevada out of Bishop CA. You continue to inspire me.
Thanks. I am looking forward to summer to get more use of it and readily test it out, it is a bit cold now.
Very well thought out design! I am toying with the idea of making my own tent. I’ve watched many videos - but your design is solid and also I like that it’s not made for a 6 foot tall man!! Haha! I’m 5”1’ so, I keep thinking a solo tent should be plenty room for me. Thanks for showing us that it is!
Bravo!
Hi Amber. I am glad you liked it. I have found a definite advantage in making my own gear to my size. Saves weight and more practical.
Nice tent. Well thought out. Amazing workmanship. That's again Restless for great videos
Thanks James. Just don't look too closely at the wonky sewing.
absolutely fantastic
Thanks Lezley
Impressive!
Thanks
Some great new features, really like the foot and head extensions as they help keep your gear dry. Did you notice a difference with the condensation with the vents? Smart designing and very clever. Good job I wasn’t sewing it ha! Ha
Thanks. I only used it for a few nights before my thru hike was cut short because of the lockdown. The day it rained heavily the tent stayed dry to the touch inside so it may have been the ventilation or just not cold enough for condensation. The other nights were not in conditions that cause condensation.
The sewing is not perfect, wonky seams and some rough gathers but it functions as intended. I am a novice self taugh sewer.
Fantastic tent! I’ve seen other things you’ve made. Very clever lassie 👍🏼
Thanks Eva
Awesome Kirstine ... cant wait for next & the $question!
Thanks Clinton. Yes the $ question will be answered
Well I’m impressed
Thanks Rex
Very nice, I often wish my duplex was a little narrower. It’s all about that foot print!
Yes that is why I like the smaller tent. There are lots of times I can squeeze my small tent in where a Duplex won't go. This has most of the good things with the Duplex, which is a great tent, but in a better size
Amazing! Great job! ❤️ you should patent that before someone mass produces it
Thanks Ellen.
Yea but China dont care : )
i realize I'm pretty off topic but do anyone know a good website to watch new tv shows online ?
@Julio Reginald Flixportal :)
@Johnny Rey Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :) Appreciate it !!
Great design and well executed. Any chance you can post links on where you bought all your materials? Many thanks in advance
I purchased most of the materials from RipstopByTheRoll.com. The detailed list of materials and the plans are in my videos on the making of the tent.
@@RestlessKiwiHiker appreciate the reply. I googled it not long after I sent the previous message and found the site you linked.. looking forward to making something different, thank you
Nicely done! looks very comfy.
Thanks. Feels much more roomy inside than my last tent despite the same footprint.
Really crafty.
Thanks John
Nice work🇨🇦
Thanks
Restless Kiwi, your homemade tent is "sew" awesome!!!
Ha ha. Nice Karen
Well done, I bought the Plexamid which I guess is similar...
Thanks Holden. The Plexamid is a good tent that several really liked on PCT but it didnt meet my needs. If I couldn't make my own tent I probably would have gone for the Tarptent Aeon Li.
Great looking tent, with all you need for backpacking or paddle tripping. When are you planning to post the video of you making the tent? Can you possibly post a pattern that we might follow to make our own?
Thanks, and I really enjoy your travel videos, and the PCT series was epic!
Hi Ron. I will post the video in the next week or two. I got caught up in helping a friend with her business but will be free soon and have time to finish the video. The video will have the pattern and material list so you can make your own.
Wow, this is great! Such a great and rewarding project.
I've just bought a very similar tent (making one on my own far exceeds my sewing skills - for now). I'm thinking about upgrading it with these little poles you came up with to extend the head and the foot room. Did you sew the sleeves into the mesh and the hull or did you just cut an opening in the mesh to slide them through?
Hi Jonus. I left a space in the mesh for them to go through. It is small enough that there is no gap and the insects havent made there way through it yet.
This is absolutely amazing. I've been hemming and hawing on making my own tent for a while now after making a diy hammock - I've started planning my own design out in sketchup but after seeing this I think I might just wait for your next video with all the details (if you're still planning on doing so?!). Hope you're doing well, & take care
Hi Erik. Yes I am working on the video, hope to have it out next week. Definately recommend giving it a go making your own. It was easier than I was expecting and great having something that suits you perfectly.
@@RestlessKiwiHiker yeah and also it just feels so good making things yourself! I'm curious if it would be possible to cuddle two people into your design or if that would require some changes? From what I can tell it seems like you have a little wiggle room on-top of the standard 54" fabric widths
Yes you could make it 120cm wide with the fabric width which would allow 2 people if you were very friendly. I have my pattern in the video to make it easy to modify
What a great tent! You have actually improved on the Z packs with your features! Did you use this tent on your most recent hike? (BTW, so sorry that you had to abort the hike due to Covid 19.). I remember watching your video of making your pack for the PCT. You are amazing! Where do you buy the DCF?
Thanks Sarah. Yes this was the tent I used on my recent thru hike snd it performed well in strong wind, both steady and gusty, and rain. Once even with half the pegs only a couple of cm deep due to hard ground.
I got the DCF from Ripstop By the Roll. My next video will break down all the materials by; anount, cost and supplier.
Love it!!!!! Amazing!!!! Just absolutely love it!!! Just the video I was looking for as I can’t afford the Zpacks tents and just want to get my own made! Do you I could make a 4 person tent to hold my wife and 3 kids along with me? And Zpacks doesn’t even make a 4 person and if they did it would be priced too high for me just being a weekender with my family out on the AT every now and than.
Sewing wise It would be easy, just adjust the width dimensions. The thing that would need to be tested is if the pegs cound hokd the extra strain to keep the spine taut.
Awesome! you are so skilled and motivated :) How much did the materials cost?
Thanks David. The $ question will be answered in the next video. I will give total cost and break down by material and supplier
Beautiful. Those side extender struts are genius!
Couple questions: 1. They go through the bug netting? 2. Why bother with a sleeve for them?
I may have to get right on modifying my duplex for the same idea! Thanks Homemade!
Thanks Mark. Yes they go through the netting to ensure they are in the tight place. The sleeves serve two purposes. They keep the poles in the right place. I used these poles on my old tent and in wind they slide off the right spot and fall down. The other reason is to guide through the mosquito netting so there are no gaps for the insects to get through and to reduce the risk of ripping the netting.
Restless Kiwi Aha! Once again, fantastic idea.
You’ve done a wonderful and most professional job. An amazing tent! You’re very generous sharing it, your thought processes / planningand construction methods with us 😍😊
Thanks Richard. I am glad you found it helpful.
Excellent job! Any issues with condensation?
Not so far. It is better than my last tent which I think is due to the top vents which I generally have wide open except in heavy rain. I do consider campsite location if it is likely to be conditions conducive to condensation.
Appears to be of an excellent design concept and of competent fabrication.
Do you have a name for this tent model?
Second the thought you obtain design patent protection for your thoughtful and creative design of this tent.
Might this design/model tent be in production by yourself upon request for those who might want to purchase a "Restless Kiwi" designed tent at some future time?
Thanks William. No formal name but something like the burrow perhaps. Kiwis dig a burrow to have their eggs. I have no plans to produce commercially and unfortunately would not be able to keep the price competitive making it myself on a one off basis. I am happy for people to use my design for personal use.
@@RestlessKiwiHiker ...Thank You for your reply, with much appreciation for your multiple skills as evidenced by your informative wide spectrum of videos posted on CZcams...Continued Good health and safety for NZ and You and Family...
Nice work. How long did it take you to build the tent? Did you do a pattern first. Did you reuse any of the materials from your Solplex - like the rainbow zipper? What seam tape did you use?
Hi. I have two videos detailing how I designed and built the tent you may be intetested in watching. It took 2 days full time to build the tent. I drew the plans based on my wish list and then built a basic scale model testing a couple of designs. I then used cheap cotton for full size testing before using the hood material. The only parts I used from my old tent were the rings for the self support option. I used DCF seam tape purchased from Rocky Mountain Fabrics on Amazon and direct from Ripstop by the Roll where I also got most of my fabric.
Hi. Just checking in on you as you haven’t blogged for awhile. Hope you’re keeping well.
Cheers
Hi Eva. I am well thanks.
Sorry for the lack of uploads. I have been helping out a friend at her work as she has been navigating the effects of Covid-19. I am nearly finished and will have time to edit a few videos I have waiting.
I was wondering the same, glad to hear you're doing well and being your usual kind-hearted self Homemade!
I love this tent design. Have you had a chance to use it? Would you
change anything? I always thought a sky light flap over the head area would be
wonderful on a cloudless starry speckled night. With maybe a breathing flap
option just over the head and face. Do you have a pattern I could use to make
one similar, but custom to my 5'7" (172 CM) Anyway well done, thank you
for sharing.
Hi Kuhn. Yes I got to use it on my recent thru hike, though only for 4 nights as I had to stop due to countrywide virus lockdown. It performed well in high wind and rain but I would like to use it in a wider variety of conditions to get a real feel for it. My next video will be on the design and making of my tent and will include detailed plans, material list and even patterns. These should be easy to adjust to make the tent longer. If you dont keep gear at your foot and head the tent would fit you as it is. The foot poles make it really roomy and allow taller people to fit in a shorter length than normal. For reference I am 165 cm.
@@RestlessKiwiHiker Thank you and I am looking foreword to the next video.
thanks for sharing. i to am making my own tent and i just wondered if you could tell me what thread you think is best for sewing the dcf material. Doug
I am not sure if it is best but I used polyester upholstery thread. It is stronger than normal thread and lasts better in the wet than cotton. I bought it at my local sewing shop so easily available. Despite severely overloading my homemade pack at times (21kg going through Sierras in heavy snow) and completing PCT and another 2 month hike the thread is showing no signs of wear.
@@RestlessKiwiHiker thanks . I have used polyester but just wasn't sure if it was the best option and I am looking at making another tent and just wanted to make sure I was using the the right stuff. thanks again.
How did you glue the patches on the bottom corners of the vestibule doors? The patch the D-Ring is sewn to. @6:42
Hi and sorry for the slow response. The patches are stick on but I reinforced by sewing around the edges.
Hallo , do you have inside some water from condenzation?
At times yes though much less than my previous tent. The top vents help. Unfortunately all single wall tents can get condensation and good campsite selection is important.
However the condensation runs down the wall and through the mesh and even after 25 days in hot and wet weather I never had any condensation drip on me.
Also the DCF fabric is easily wiped dry and doesn't hold water so drying and packing the tent is easy.
How would you add a guye line point above the head of your sleeping pad
Just sew a loop using cross-grained ribbon and stick on a DCF reinforcement patch over the stitching (on the inside of the tent) to waterproof it. In this tent design I never needed additional guy attachments. The end poles gave good foot/head clearance at the ends and I was never in places where the wind was extreme enough to need extra tie downs.
Thank you so much!
How bad would the dcm deform?
Where you at???
Hi Rex. I was working for a bit to help a friend out and then have been off grid building up my trail running fitness. I still have some videos I need to edit and post but have been distracted with some other projects. These are nearly finished so I can switch focus back to doing some more videos.
Great 👍
Yes I want to buy this tent
You should sell
Thanks Sheila
