  • How to make a bridge for a Brompton M-Type handlebar.
    #Brompton #Bikepacking #BromptonHandlebarBridge
Whenever I've used my Brompton for commuting or for bikepacking trips, it was always a pain that the curved shape of Brompton M-Type handlebars don’t have much usable area that allow you to mount any lights, GPS, a phone or bottle holders to, not at a usable angle anyway...
Once upon a time Brompton sold a handlebar bridge/brace and there are versions that you can buy online or print if you have a 3D printer.
They seem quite expensive for a bit of plastic, some brackets and a couple of screws and I don’t have access to a 3D printer that I've seen other people making these things from.
Here’s my version you can make yourself, using only simple tools, some 21mm black waste water outlet pipe and a joint/coupling.
This material is ideal as the pipe is 21mm, the handlebar is 22mm and the outside thickness of the coupling is about 24.5mm and when shaped, has enough thickness to almost wrap around the handlebar itself so that it doesn't move backwards or forwards or rotate - it can't move down anymore as the curve of the handlebar stops it doing so.
You can use a couple of cable ties if you want, but so far this has proved rattle-free and sturdy - and its not as though I'm mounting anything very heavy to it.
I used an angled joint in this video, but a straight joining piece would probably be easier to hold when cutting - just cut it in half diagonally and file it to shape as shown here.
I bought mine from toolstaion.com here in the UK but I'm sure its available lots of other places too.
If you've learnt anything from the video, give it a 'like' or leave a comment.
    Cheers!

I have just tried this. With a little patience I now have a handlebar bridge and I am delighted with it. It provides space for instruments, is compatible with a Klickfix bracket, and doesn’t interfere with the fold. And it costs next to nothing to make. Thank you for sharing this and for the easy to follow film.

Well done! I watched it even though I don’t need the bridge. For a light mount I use the two-fish lockblock mounted with two zipties right in the middle of the steering wheel on top of that screw…. Surprisingly sturdy. And I can still angle the light up and down (a little). For the phone: nite ize has a nice mount which places the phone next to your grips. A fancy (fanaue) mount does the same but mounts the phone in the middle. My nav app is my speedometer.

I’ve recently purchased a printed bridge bar and I’m not that impressed with the quality, I’m expecting it to break at any time. Thanks for sharing this, think I’ll be fabricating one like yours 👍👍😊😊

Wonderful stuff! I’m heading to Lowes right now. Also, once I cut a zip tie ( cable tie if you will) there invariably seems to be sharp bit that stabs my finger or catches on something. I discovered that nail clippers cut that bit off flush and the universe unfolds as it should. Again……thanks for this great clip. Oh……and your workshop? Never mind the cleanup…..and you can tell the Mrs I said so…..

I have a theory that it will fill with water though unless you seal the 5mm holes with something.

    • @Bokooda
      @Bokooda  Před rokem

Possibly, but as both ends aren’t sealed to the handlebar ‘exactly’, any water that gets in will drain out. You could always drill drainage holes if wish. Thanks for the comment. Enjoy 🙏

I’m sure you could create something very similar using aluminium tubing, but it’s not something I have easy access to… no idea what the minimum length you can buy is either… ‘spose you could cut down some handle-bars to fit 👍
