Hints for building a wishing well with a hexagonal base

  • When duplicating a wooden wishing well I developed some useful hints for making the hexagonal base straight and uniform. Ride along as I work out how to build this unique piece of yard art, designed to cover the well head in the side yard. (See update below)
    Update: I had a request for the measurements. This will be a peek into how an Engineer (at least this Engineer) does a duplication project like this. Just enough info, but you'll have to puzzle through the assembly a bit.
    Remember I had the old one sitting there, so angles and such things were transferred over. But the measurements are here. The second page lays out the data much more clearly than the first page, and can be used as a cut plan. As I recall it was all correct, and the order fully built the wishing well.
    I have shared these measurements, along with photos of the finished project, to the following site. I hope you find it helpful!

    I would add more wood to the roof to keep move of the water out, use some Thompson's water seal. Great job !

      Problem is, most folks would want to park a flower pot in the wooden bucket, so letting in some water is a good thing!

    Should have 45 the ends so they marry together.
    So there's not a gap between the ends.
    That's how I build mine.
    And it looks alot cleaner.

    • @cardinalflyer
      @cardinalflyer  Před 2 lety

      For the base? That is an interesting thought. It would have to be a 30 degree angle, and would require longer blocks to fill the space. It would have a much different look. I was going for an exact replacement for what I had, with the benefit of requiring much less alignment accuracy.

    Thanks for the video... How about using a Stop Sign for measuring?

    • @cardinalflyer
      @cardinalflyer  Před 2 lety

      Great idea if you can find one, and it if's the right size! Although it's not like you could borrow one from the nearby street corner... probably easier to draw one in a couple of minutes, any size you want.

      Hello Sara. Since it's you asking, I'll say yes. :-)
      This will be a peek into how an Engineer (at least this Engineer) does a duplication project like this. Just enough info, but you'll have to puzzle through the assembly a bit.
      Remember I had the old one sitting there, so angles and such things were transferred over. But the measurements are here. What's it's weight? Looks heavy.. will Grandma be able to move it about the yard?

    • @cardinalflyer
      @cardinalflyer  Před 3 lety +1

      It is a bit heavy, but should be to hold it down on windy days. This isn't something you cart around.. and Grandma would want to have a little help. A hand cart does the job fine.
