  • Adapter Cables shown in video from Amazon:
    StarTech TRRS Adapter: amzn.to/2fSLnzQ
    3.5mm Aux Cable 2-Pack: amzn.to/2oooBBW
    Stereo Y-Adapter: amzn.to/2nBbBu3
    In this video, I’ll show you how to record your piano keyboard to your Android phone. It’s pretty simple to do but you’ll need a few things first. The StarTech TRRS adapter is the main cable that allows this to work. On one end it has a 3.5mm plug with four metal sections on it plus a couple of ports on the other end that have a headphone and microphone icons on them. You’ll also need two 3.5mm male to male patch cables. These have 3 metal sections on the plugs. You’ll also need a quarter inch to 3.5mm adapter plug and also a 3.5mm stereo Y-splitter.
    Last thing you’ll need is either a speaker or a set of headphones for monitoring. Now take the Y-splitter and plug it into the quarter inch plug. Locate the headphone output on your keyboard and insert in the quarter inch plug. Now the two 3.5mm patch cables go into the Y-splitter. Grab one of the patch cables… and it doesn’t matter which one and plug it into the speaker. Or you can substitute this cable and speaker with headphones. You need this because the keyboard’s speakers are disabled with the quarter inch plug inserted. The TRRS adapter cable now should be plugged into the phone.
    For the last connection, grab the other 3.5mm patch cable and plug it into the TRRS adapter port with the microphone icon on it. This setup is now ready for recording! On Android, I like the built-in voice recorder app because it’s simple to use and works great for what I’m doing. Right before recording, adjust the keyboard’s volume level to about half way up to start. And now the waveform registers the sound from the keyboard as I hit the keys. Now I don’t know how to play piano but at least you can see that it’s recording. You may have to adjust the volume after your first test if the audio sounds distorted. There are several cables needed to do this but recording a piano keyboard to an iPhone isn’t difficult to do.

    After trying for a while I got it to work. One thing I realized was that order in which you plug in thing matters a lot. For example I have to plug in cord into the phone, before I plug in headphones. Also I have to plug in everything before turning the keyboard on, otherwise it doesn't work. So if you're having trouble, just make sure to try all the possible orders of plugging things in and one of them should work.

      Thanks so much for the tip! I'm glad that you were able to figure it out! I'm using a Sabrent Audio Adapter that works as an audio interface (connecting keyboard to laptop), but it only has a mono input port (this is a very cost-effective method, so I thought that I'd give it a try). With the set-up of this video to record the keyboard's audio to the android phone, are you able to get a stereo recording/sound? How is the quality of the sound recording? Would it be good enough for making music tracks for release? If this set-up yields good quality stereo sound without any white noise (or having to purchase expensive audio interfaces), then this video/tutorial is definitely a treasure! Thanks in advance for your input.

      @@IvanMiletic Thanks so much for your response, Ivan! The overall quality of your recordings sound good with this set-up. I looked up the device info of the links, and it looks like one of the devices has a mono micro input (not stereo), so I'll just try the set-up that I already have. It's good to know that this option also yields a good quality recording, though. By the way, it's humorous (in my opinion) that your first piano cover titled "You're All Alone" is completely contrary to my first original song, "I Will Be with You" (in terms of song title meaning).

    Great post! I still was not able to hear music from my headphones when playing my keyboard when the headphones are plugged into the mic section of the split cord. But I realized that when plugging the headphones into the Y stereo box splitter that's directly plugged into the keyboard, I can hear my keyboard. Now I can record music to the voice recorder on my phone using my keyboard, and I can now hear my music from my keyboard.

      You can use your Android phone to record audio and video from your keyboard. But here’s a tip. Not all Android camera apps recognize an external audio input/microphone. You’d have to test yours first. If your built in camera app doesn’t work I recommend downloading the free Open Camera app from the Google Play store. I can confirm that app will work. The TRRS adapter has the contacts on the 3.5mm plug so it can access the mic input on the phone’s headphone port. Many people are not aware that the 3.5mm port on a smartphone is actually a multi-function port capable of input and output. Typically it’s used for headphones but when you plug the TRRS adapter into it you will then not only have headphone output but will be able to plug in an external mic to use for recording. In the example in my video I’m inputting the signal from the keyboard rather than a mic. Hope this helps!

  • @Zoco101
    @Zoco101 Před 2 lety +1

    The video is old now of course, so nowadays most keyboards and digital pianos have some sort of onboard recording facility or even MIDI & audio over USB, so you can record onto a freebie DAW. It's still good that there is this option, but the mono issue on the phones is a bit worrying. Is it receiving combined channels? Or just one?
    Most significantly, many boards now have stereo output jacks - I never buy one without. Maybe that would reduce the need for so many cables, but I won't be recording on Android anyway, since I'm lucky enough to have better options in my studio, both portable and desktop. And my mobile phone is usually too near its storage limit anyway, so I don't want to use it as a music recording device.
    A fairly inexpensive solution is to buy a portable stereo recorder, by Tascam or Zoom. Prices start just under 100 euros, but I suggest the Tascam DP006 which is a portable 6-track "studio" costing about 125 euros. The Zoom H4n is a legendary stereo recorder, and great for recording gigs too. Roland makes an interesting product called something like Go Pro. It's a portable interface for connecting instruments (and a mic) to either computers or mobiles. Not so cheap though.
    For iPhone/iPad users, Tascam makes the iXZ which is a proper interface costing just €50.

    1/plug jack to Casio CDP-235r

    3/turn on any voice recorder app (there are 3 on my phone and all works)
    4/plug the splitter into head phone jack of the phone
    5/wait 3-4 seconds and the notifications on the galaxy S10 pop-up and said recording with external microphone attached, on the Galaxy Note 3, an icon of microphone + a word "detected" then all were fading out after 2 seconds.
    6/slowly push the jack all the way to the splitter which labeled mic icon
    7/Bixby (S10) or Voice (Note3) pop-up, just click go back once to turn it off.
    8/click recording on phones and show me your smiles
    VOILA

    Hi there
    Something of an eye-opener for me. But I was wondering, if a phone output (from a
    keyboard or mixer) wouldn’t be too much powered for a mic input on a mobile?
    I gave it a try, as your video looked convincing, but it seems, I was right! I bought the necessary
    cables, and mic’s connected to the mic cable of the TRRS splitter goes fine through and can be recorded, but on my
    mobile (Huawei P20 Lite) any phone output connected to the mic cable just gives some noise.

      Sorry it's not working for you! Getting audio into smartphones is tricky since there is only one 3.5mm port. That port is for input and output port so that's where the TRRS adapter comes in. It is correctly wired to separate the contact points inside. If you aren't using a TRRS adapter, then you can't get audio into the Android or iPhone. A stereo Y-adapter looks exactly the same but wired differently. One trick I've found is that sometimes a pair of headphones needs to be plugged into the TRRS adapter's headphone input port to make this work... but not all the time. You might also try unplugging everything and shutting down the recording app. Then plug everything in including headphones and relaunch the app. I have to do that sometimes. Hope these tips help get you up and recording!

      Are you using a true TRRS adapter plugged into your phone? If yes you may need to unplug it from the phone. You would be losing some of the music in the recording if the keyboard is stereo. However smartphones can only record in mono through its audio input. Every device is different so you’d have to look at the manual to see if your keyboard offers that. Thanks for watching!

      Yes you can record audio and video at the same time with the external mic. However on a lot of Android phones the built-in camera app does not recognize an external mic. On phones like this you will have to download the free Open Camera app from the Play Store. That one works for sure as I’ve tested it many times. Just be aware that the recording setup shown in my video will record sound directly from the keyboard but no ambient sounds in the room.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  Před 7 lety

      Two inputs is a little more difficult. You would need a simple audio mixer that has at least 2 channels of input and then connect that to your phone. One channel is the piano and the other is the mic. To me, it's too difficult to sync audio tracks afterwards but it can be done. However, there are advantages to having a separate voice track and music track so you'll have more options during audio editing. Hope this helps!

    Thank you for this great video. Do we need the TRRS adapter since the 3.5 mm jacks in phones is setup in such a way to only accept audio input from the 2nd ring up from the base (the microphone signal) of the TRRS cable. If so, does that mean that one of the two unbalanced stereo signals from the keyboard is lost and the phone essentially receives an unbalanced mono signal through the ground and microphone conductors on the male TRRS plug?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for your question! I sometimes have a problem getting audio into my phone with the StarTech cable. When that happens, I'll usually unplug everything and shut down the app. Sometimes restart the phone but that's mostly unnecessary. Before plugging the StarTech adapter back into the phone, connect your piano keyboard to the mic input on the StarTech and then plug in a set of headphones into the headphone input. Now plug the StarTech TRRS adapter into the phone and try it again. I've found that sometimes having a headphone plugged in along with the mic helps trigger the phone to recognize the mic input so you can record your keyboard sounds. Also, wouldn't hurt to double check that you plugged your sources into the correct inputs on the TRRS adapter. Hopefully you can get it working!

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  Před 5 lety +3

      Yeah this should work as a cheap alternative. You'll be able to record your music straight from the keyboard but it will not record any sounds from the room. Also you'll need to check that your phone can actually use the sound from the external mic. It should but on the phone I was using in the video it didn't allow external mic usage when recording video. But that's a really old and cheap phone. Most modern phones will allow it. The TRRS adapter is cheap and will allow you to record from your piano! Hope this helps!

    I recently got interested in recording myself on piano. Sadly i don't have enough money for an audio interface so i came across this video.
    I ordered myself the parts but i read a few comments saying the setup didnt work so that got me somewhat worried. I eventually recieved the parts and the setup worked perfectly. I did encounter some "hiccups" on the way however.
    When i first used the setup, i was recieving mono audio from my headphones but it eventually fixed itself. Perhaps i didnt have it plugged in properly or the gear had to warm up but i havent had that issue since.
    Recording audio itself however was the biggest hiccup to overcome. The previous audio recording app i was using WAS recording the audio however, it was incredibly distorded. like ear rape level distortion. I had the volune at 35% and it was still doing that. I lowered the volume down to 5 or 10% and it fixed it, but i could barely hear myself through my headphones.
    So i uninstalled that app and installed a new one. I tweaked some settings and the recordings began to work finally.
    So in summery, try different recording apps and make sure your connections are secured. Also get the items mentioned in the video, especially that adapter. Dont substitute.
    Ive already posted a few videos using this setup. The keyboard i use is a yamaha ytp 240. I will see if this setup will work on my casio privia 160. Thanks!

    Hi everybody, I just share my experience that maybe could help someone else who falls in the same issue:
    With an Huawei Cell (P2019) I just needed the Stereo Y-Adapter and a 3.5mm Aux Cable (as I used the headphone to listen), TRRS is not required: the trick is to connect the Aux Cable to the keyboard/Piano and the Cell phone BEFORE, turn ON the Keyboard/Piano (if not already done) and only AFTER plug the headphone/Speaker cables to the Y-Adapter.
    If you don't follow this order, It doesn't work (In my case even using the TRRS Adapter as in the video: I tried).
    P.s.: Always in my experience, I found that If I turn off the piano or I disconnect the AUX cable from the Cell (e.g. just to listen what I've recorder), I have to repeat the above plug order. If you don't, while headphone/speaker will work, the phone will record the environment noises, not the Keyboard output (as far as I understood it seems that when you plug the cable to cellphone with H/S and Keyboard both connected the Y-Adapter, it gives priority to the first one, using its internal microphone instead).

      You have almost everything you need to make that work but the main adapter cable needed to make recording work on your phone is the StarTech TRRS cable. It doesn't have to be that brand but it has to be a TRRS adapter cable that allows mic input plus headphone output. See the item in the video description. Hope this helps!
