Langar wali dal recipe or Langar Ki Dal is a very tasty punjabi dal recipe that is prepared as a parsad in Gurudwara and most of the people term it gurdware wali dal. Undoubtedly langarwali dal is known for its simplicity, comfort, taste and nutrition in a pot, as this dal has no fancy ingredients, no copious amounts of butter or cream. And perhaps that is the reason one is able to actually taste and relish the this dal with just a few spices and herbs playing the supporting cast.
'Langar Ki Dal’ - Bunch of pulses cooked together with lots of love. This recipe has a delicious and healthy blend of two dals and a spicy zing reminding you of the authentic langarwali dal.
Hot off the stove phulkas with smoky flavored Dal Amritsari is comforting winter food at its best! There is something about langar food at Gurudwaras that is almost magical, not only is it deeply satisfying but you leave the holy place with a certain feel good factor. It is difficult to recreate the same flavors at home though it is simple, wholesome and humble khana, the dal sabzi and roti fare. The chownk or tarka, the final sizzling garnish, where spices are fried in ghee until aromatic and mixed into the creamy Langarwali dal just before serving gives the dal a unique and smoky flavor.

In our times-I am talking about 1940s Langar Dal was the most admired Dal.Besides Hing,Ghee,Haldi,Mirch, Jeera,ginger and Hara Dhanya there was nothing else.
Garlic and ONIONS were NO NO.
This is the reason I have stopped eating Langar in Gurudwara. My maternal family had a Gurudwara in Dera Ismail Khan and my Paternal grandmother’s were Satsangi and Bhaijees in Issakhel .
Both places are in old NWFP now Pukhtankhwa.

I am from Kerala and I have visited Amritsar in 2019.. We had many meals at Langar. We loved it. I have served there for 2hrs. Washing bowls. I liked the langar wali dal very much and was in search of the recipe... Thank you I got the traditional one. Sure will try out. And will be back to Amritsar again.. Love Panjab 😊
