  • Here we have a broken Dyson AM09 fan heater that refuses to oscillate. I know the feeling...
It belongs to a client of my mate Richard who rather grandly promised that I could repair it. But I wasn't sure that I could.
Let's take a look at it, see what's wrong and attempt to repair it.
Special guest appearance from Emerson at the end!
Hope you enjoy this video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)
And a happy New Year to all my dear viewers!

You are our heroic little trooper for persevering with this garbage appliance.
We've only ever worked on one Dyson, a vacuum for a dear friend, and it was the last. Terribly brittle plastic (even at a couple of years old) held together by an unbelievable number of screws. Just horrid 😢
We wish you more confidence in your impressively immense abilities. Steve can do it - yes he can!
Also our neighbour does sidework in authentic Thai massage should your thighs need a tune up after all that clenching. Judging by the number of gentleman callers she is excellent at her trade.
Let us know if any help is required 😍
Thank you ever so much for your videos and comments over the last year and we look forward to seeing what you've got up your sleeve for 2023.
    👍

    Thanks for the teardown!
Same model here. While the oscillator does work, it appears to get hung up on something when it swivels from the center to my right. The motor just clicks so I shut it off so it doesn't break. If I turn it by hand all the way to the right (which I wouldn't recommend), then the oscillator will catch it just fine and spin back to my left, then get hung up again in the center-right. Also squeaks a fair bit and it sounds like there's a point of friction somewhere in the outer housing.
I'll probably look at it another time. For now, I was able to accomplish my main goal of tape on that seven segment display, as well as some electrical tape over those two blue LEDs. Will sleep in a much darker room now. c:

This must be ''BRITISH'' humour 😂
It worked fine once you located them ''other'' loose screws from the broken post...
All in all, GREAT Job 😊

I remember the exact moment these fan heaters were first launched in 2011 - I was doing some weekend work as an in-store demonstrator for Dyson at that time. Unfortunately, information about the heaters was not forthcoming, thus was almost impossible to answer questions from customers. I remember also sitting in a training session with other Dyson staff, and watching the presenter doing their best to work out why the heater they were showing us had stopped working...and as someone at the back of the room suggested, was it anything to do with the fact it was plugged into a rolled up extension lead? Which, incidentally, it was, as the extension socket had a built-in thermal cut-out. Just as well, really.
I think the biggest issue we had was that these heaters were fan heaters by definition, but were designed to be much more than such, what with their heat-retaining plates etc, therefore it was difficult to explain to customers what they actually were and what they replaced in terms of an existing heat source. But after I left, I read somewhere that they'd been recalled, each and every model...do you have any information on this? I don't.

I didn’t realize that Dyson used such cheap plastic. 😢

What size torque screw is needed? Thanks

Torx T5, 6 or 7 (forgot) will cover most the screws you'll encounter, and T20 for that large central screw.

Why people spend so much money on an appliance and then don't look after it totally baffles me.
