That's a great tip to use the sanding block to smooth out and age the mod podge bubbles! I'm really liking these storage 'books' and am thinking they would be really cute to give with a handmade journal... decorate the storage book to match the journal, and attach a simple closure over the opening to hold the journal inside.

2 years later! I did the whole thing with double sided tape. I also did cover with fabric as well. I made a larger storage folder with an Amazon box. Never thought I could make it, but went stoically on, and voila 1 hour later, I finished. 😅thanks Pam for all these videos. Making things I never thought I could possibly make. 😂

It might be easier to glue the gusset fabric on the outside of the cover before you put on the paper cover if you see what I mean great idea

It is good that you share it with us when you struggle. Makes us not feel so bad.
Suggestion : doing it over 2 days would be simpler. You glue one side, then wait until the next day to do the other when the 1st is stable.

I love this idea! My mom would probably cringe at a lot at these crafts because she is a retired librarian and bibliophile! I love books too, but I have NO problem tearing one up for the sake of art! As far as sewing the gussets to the book cover, you'd want to pre-poke all the holes for sewing and hand stitch it. You could probably machine stitch it, but I personally wouldn't want to risk missing the holes and messing up my machine. Love your videos!

Hubby just got a shredder so I had to put up “NO TRESPASSING “ signs on My three rooms sewing/crafts/writing office. No entry and no snitching my scraps. My scraps equal my sanity. But in his Amazon Mail were two boxes with two generous spines and lovely overlap so pretty paper will be protected. Found an old Hermès bag that had survived a savage cat attack. 💼 handle will be lovely on my paper holder. TYFT

  • @aptwalker2009
    @aptwalker2009 Před 4 lety +2

This is a great storage container. I may try a couple. I'm going to cover the spine with the same cloth used for the 'gusset', but I'll glue the fabric down on the outside of the cover to avoid all of the hassle of trying to get the fabric right on the inside of the cover. That would be a personal nightmare for me. It would also do away with having to try to gesso over the edges and spine too. If the decorative paper to use on the outside covers is too thin to glue smoothly over the fabric on the edges, I'll use chipboard, cereal box salvage, or manila (or heavier) file folders to glue the deco paper on before adding it to the outside. Thanks for sharing.

Ok Pam, I had a brainstorm while watching this old video. If you put a book or box inside the cover with the “width of choice” and almost as tall as your book cover, you can pull your flaps up and over, then apply glue where you need it, close the other cover on them to get them squished onto the glue and tada, gussets are done! Not sure if that made sense to anyone, but it sounds good in my head!

I was wondering whether you could have glued the fabric gussett to top and bottom and then put the text block (pages you removed) back in place to fold the gussett fabric onto it, place glue and then close book cover. Wouldn't this alleviate the need to use the ruler etc to make a tight connection between gussett and book cover?

That was pretty much my idea, except I was thinking you might not have the text block so was thinking of making a jig of sorts or use another book to drape the fabric over, with glue on the book or on the fabric....either way would work. But..... MY way is going to be even easier hahaha I'm not going to make one muahahashga not that way that is. I'm going to lay it down with the front cover being the lid and the walls and dividers will be cardboard to organize my little bits like washi, paper clips, pens, etc. 🤗

Hello Pam! Long time ago a professional cutler told me to clean adhesives from scissors and other metal blades like exacto knives with a little white vinegar on a piece of an old t-shirt or other lint free cloth. Reason: it will not pit or cause your blades to rust. Second suggestion is to use a citrus based cleaning oli found at most hardware stores or places like walmart. I use one called Goo-B-Gone

After glued fabric is dry remove inside book and the mouth opening is exactly the width you want.

I don´t know if it would be easier or any way better, but the fabric on the sides, I would have cut them in two, sewn the edges for strength and then glued them on the book and hand sew the two pieces together after when the glue dried, then you can have fun with stitches and go mayhem on the sides :D 💜 maybe put some eyelets on both sides and use a string to give it a corset look? then you have the option to loosen it up if you need the room :)
But, I have no complaints on your approach, it´s a solid and good way of doing it :)
I REALLY L.O.V.E this idea! I´m always after good storage, and I´ve had problems finding something that fit my needs, this is a wonderful solution! :D easy, fun, creative and just adorable! :D 💜

With Modpodge is best to use a brayer to smooth it down. I also have a card that smooth the paper. They came with my Mod Podge. I love it. There are so many types. I love this idea.

When I saw you had two videos I went and got my coffee 🤣🥰😂. Wow! What a cool project! The sides are tricky but I don’t know how else you could do it...just takes patience and dexterity.🤣. So many uses and the protection it offers is great. The cover treatment is fabulous....on to video #2 and my 2nd cup of coffee 👍

I just came across your channel and suscribed. I love your file holder. I have a couple of these that I found at thrift stores. I had thought of making a couple to hold my themed magazines. Your home made ones are just as good as the store bought ones. With your ideas I can make more and decorate the ones that I already have that are starting to look a little grungy. I liked yours so much that I subscribed to your channel. TFS

perhaps a strip of wood, perhaps a centimetre or 2 thick, the width of you inner book spine and long enough to stick out of end/side of book cover..then place along end of book, bring the material to the top with glue on top and close the book cover over..that way you have some firmness to press on AND support at the same time..

Hi from the UK.. love, love, love your chaos. Just wanted to pass on a couple of possibly helpful tips...WD-40 for removing sticky marks and if you do want rid of your glue bumps then I have a little mod podge smoother but a plastic store card type thing will do just as good with a little baking paper to protect xx

This danged pandemic has really messed with my traveling. My husband and I (me more so than him) love to gamble and I have missed my trip to Vegas and to Blackhawk Co. I’ve probably spent more on craft supplies than we would have on both of our trips combined. I typically win enough to pay for our trips so I’m in the hole big time! Lol.

If you drive to the Casinos, pack a small portable umbrella table and camp chairs and have JJ pop up sales at stops along your way. Might recoupe the expenses you "may or may not" have recently incurred!! 😂😂😂

Have to watch the next video, you like totally vanished. Thanks for the new project idea and I hope your having a awesome weekend.

I’m wondering if it would be a little less messy if you do all the decorating of the cover first, than the inside paper and fabric for the inside of the spine, and do the “flaps” of fabric on the sides last. I would imagine doing the back of each side, and then the front of each side (for the sides made of fabric) would be easier than doing it all at once. That’s just a thought but I’m no expert. I’m very different and I prefer to have a plan, but I know people love the spontaneity of crafting. We all have different perspectives and ways of doing things. That’s what makes it so beautiful in my opinion. I love your videos so much and I more than appreciate you showing us everything rather than cutting and deleting your “mistakes”. 💕

Hi Pam! As soon as I saw the thumbnail that you have made a storage caddy, I stopped what I was doing to watch your video. What a great idea, I love the storage caddy. This is something that I can really use as I lack storage for my crafting supplies. Using that scrubber to get rid of that red on the cover is another good idea. And the pages that you're using, the butterflies, plants and birds, are so beautiful. Hope you're feeling better now. You are talented and creative and so much fun. I agree with traveling, I miss it. My son's family and I were going to go to Mall of America this summer. Also I have family in Kentucky that I wanted to visit. :( Hopefully next year we'll all be getting back to some kind of normal...

Would it be better to glue the fabric on the spine before gluing down the papers on the inside? That way you would have the strength of the fabric, but slick sides so paper would slide all the way down...without catching of the fabric? Just another idea! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! ❤❤❤😊
