It’s been four years since my mother passed and I’m finally almost done rehoming her things. She kept everything thinking her kids would want her stuff and the reality is at most each child only wants one or two items to remember her by. I’ve learned through this experience and am rehoming things I’ve been holding onto. Better someone else use an item now than have it wind up in the trash 30 years from now never having been used at all.

That is so interesting and I’ve heard that a lot through helping family this past year as well (children not really wanting things that were left for them) I think that these days young people are getting lighter with what they keep too. I’m glad that you’re almost finished with the rehoming. I know that my mom and MIL have had a tough time with that. I hope you were able to find that process therapeutic.💛

April, do you sense from your experience that the “keepers” are older? My parents were raised in the Depression and WWII years and I’m wondering if that has had a big impact, generationally. My contemporaries hold onto things quite a bit but I don’t think it’s as prevalent as it was in our parents’ generation. Have you seen trends along those lines?

    • @lesellen7850

Katie: I can relate. As the family party planner, photographer and historian- I have taken it upon myself to create albums (photo, memorabilia, etc.) and hired a professional to digitize. I spent three years with the process of going through a lifetime of paperwork, notes, photos. I was stuck contemplating with who is going to want these (heavy, cumbersome) albums? Now- upon my demise- it will be 1.) organized, 2.) in albums (if wanted), 3.) digitized for future generations. Next project are: getting the art, objects and jewelry appraised. If no one wants items at least I will know the dollar value. Great job.

I'm trying to go thru my mom's things now. She is still with me, but has dementia. She doesn't want to get rid of her things, so I have rented a storage shed to put them in. Every nook and cranny in the house is full. If something happens to her, we can unlock the storage shed and have a garage sale there at the unit.

When you were talking about how helpful it is just to have someone else there, that’s a technique called “body doubling.” It’s highly recommended for people with ADHD to help them focus, and it’s why people like to work in coffee shops and libraries instead of in a room at home alone. The other people provide a level of comfort and support just by being there that we might not be able to access on our own.

So good job April, as always! And seeing you tear up in explaining how the depression room came to be, makes it visible that this might also be a source of healing for you as well.

I’m very grateful to my dad for not owning lots of stuff and knick knacks. He didn’t care about things like that, and has had huge clear outs over the years so we wouldn’t have to deal with it. But he had some sentimental items, photos, hiking and fishing gear etc. The glasswear and crockery etc that he and my stepmother owned are things I remember from my childhood. It’s such painful process because these things are all that’s left of him…they existed when he did and he used them, touched them, wore them. I still have the trash bag I was going to throw out the day he passed. I’m just not able to throw it out yet. I see that it’s a symbol right now and at some point I will be able to put it out in the bin, but for now it’s sitting in my guest room

When you were talking about “not judging the mess because we don’t know what people are going through”,it also applies to weight gain.(and extreme weight loss). My husband and I were at a large event once and saw some friends from afar. The older parents, middle age son, daughter and daughter-in-law had ALL gained weight since we had last seen them a year ago. We weren’t able to catch up and talk with them but on the way home,I told my husband that something serious had happened with them. ( I gained 100 pounds taking care of my bed ridden mom for her last five years and then my dad with dementia for his last five years) A few weeks later my husband said “you were right, the mom has breast cancer and is not out of the woods yet”. I also had a friend in high school who I met through work, and she was a big girl. When I went to her house once, I saw all her school pictures hung sequentially on the wall. She went from being skinny to obese in the span of one school year, which happened to coincide with when she told me she had been gang raped at a party. I met her after the fact and went to a different school, but I don’t imagine that her family’s refusal to believe that she was raped helped matters.

After you have left maybe your mom could use the Dana k white method for decluttering…. It’s much slower but not at all overwhelming. You just open a box (or a cupboard), then look for trash, then anything that has an already established home (and you take it there right away), then things that are obviously donations. And you can basically keep as much as you like, as long as it fits in the container you have for it. I like the way she says “where would I look for this item”, and “if I was looking for it would I remember I had it”! I think that’s really helpful in getting inventory down to a level where you can remember what you have!

She doesn’t talk about interior design like you do, her channel is just about getting a house under control when you are very busy and don’t have anyone to help. She is very in to “container method”……. Basically you can keep whatever you want but it must fit in to the container (ie the cupboard or drawer, or box), and that’s how you know to get rid of more stuff. Also about clutter threshold…… which is basically the maximum amount of stuff that you personally can manage without it getting out of hand and not putting it away….. for some people that’s loads of stuff, for other people you need to get rid of half your stuff. She said that in all her schooling, she never found anything as helpful as Dana’s decluttering method. Thank you for showing that decluttering takes more than one pass. Sometimes five passes! It's not as easy as a lot of people make out, it's not once and done. It's, as you rightly said, flexing those decluttering muscles and it takes time, sometimes a lot of time. Appreciate you showing that kindness and understanding with the rest of us, showing that compassion and care is needed in these projects. I'm a borderline hoarder and it's taken me years and many passes to be able to let go. I'll be no minimalist but I don't think everyone should be, keeping things of value to you while living in a space that feels right to the person that lives there is the most important thing. I appreciate the emphasis you put on that, not on getting rid of as much as possible.
Ps. Going through all the jewellery with your mother was the sweetest thing, i hope you treasure a lot of this time and keep the many clips that weren't show on camera.

It’s so fun and inspiring to watch these videos. Your mom is a real trooper! She’s been through so much, as have you, April, and yet you both keep going making your lives and spaces feel freer. I’m helping my parents in a similar way right now, as they’re in their 70s and need to move to a one level house soon. But it is HARD for my mom especially to get rid of things. I know she has a lot of emotions, including grief over time passing and kids/grandkids growing up, tied into her possessions. It’s hard to let go, but the feeling of freedom and having clean spaces you can breathe in are so worth it. I tend to think of letting go as recirculating, so that others can use the things when they need them. Yes it’s sad to be in a later season of life, but we can welcome other people and new experiences so much better when we’re not holding into stuff. I can’t wait to watch more episodes!

Tarnished silver jewelry can be polished with a special cloth, it doesn't need to go in the garbage. I have one of these cloths at home and they work great. Broken stuff can for sure be thrown out but tarnished and not-to-your-taste items can still be donated (someone else might like it).
Working with someone else on these hard to start tasks is always so much easier! I have learned that about myself too. Once there is someone with me, I can pretty much start and complete the job on my own. I just need that company. I learned that it is called "body doubling" when I learned that I have adhd! It was so nice to learn that I'm not the only one that experiences things like that.
Paperwork is so hard to go through! I don't blame your mom for putting it off! It is so tedious and there isn't always a satisfying before and after because it can often be piled up in unseen places (filing cabinets and drawers). BUT, it's amazing the weight that it clears from your mind when you do go through it. During the summer I finally went through my filing cabinet and the pile of paperwork I had on top of it and shredded, recycled, and filed what needed it and it felt so good!
I am so looking forward to seeing the next episode! Your mom is doing great!

It is not the first time we go through her things (with my sister), but this was by far the most enjoyable, and I totally believe that my new frame of mind going into it was set from watching your videos for all these months. Thank you for your open and understanding approach. As for the storing space, we went through every object of every box, separated things to trash from those to donate and those to sell, and organized it so that it will be easier to reach things for my sister and I in the spring when we’ll rotate fall/winter to spring/summer items. And the initial plan was only to put the AC in and get the winter stuff out! But things started so well, that my mom became open to decluttering! Thank you!
