I just found your channel within the last week. Finally I found a channel where someone realizes (and shows) the chaos that you live with while working on a declutter. I had an 800 sq ft craft room, now I live in an apartment that's less than 600 sq ft. The declutter sessions are not magic "poof" & it's perfect. Thank you for inspiring me to keep on task. *I'm jumping around watching spaces that I need focus on*
Several years ago I made myself finish every started project. As I worked through them, many just didn't appeal to me anymore, so I donated them.
I’ve found that to be true myself! Glad you let them go! I bet that felt good!
Yeah! People who collect and read books have a living library. It never ever makes sense to arrange books by color or size, they are not decor. Can you imagine going into a bookstore, thrift store, or public library and trying to find a book by size or color? I'm with your mom totally on this. Thank you to your mom for inviting us into her home.
My husband won’t let me touch his books anymore 😜I totally get it, it just isn’t practical.
Absolutely. The only way my books are organized by size is if they’re too tall to fit on some shelves!
I did this to sell my house once and weirdly, I could find any book just as fast.
Agree to disagree on the colour coded bookshelves. I collect and read books and I have them mostly arranged by colour because to me that looks less visually overwhelming when there's a whole wall of bookshelvs in a room.
It's not for everyone I agree but I have a visual memory and it's easier to find my books by remembering what it looked like rather than by author or title.
It's definitely not a system that would work in a bookshop but I dont need strangers to be able to find my books. I put them there so I know where to find them
Message to mom from a fellow older crafter clutterer. I donated everything I had and it feels so much better and I craft more. Next time you want to sew something all you need is $50 and a tank of gas and you’ll be able to get all the supplies to make your next project. It’s so wonderful working this way versus picking through my boxes! Everything in your house can go. I try remembering the mantra that ‘you cant take it with you’ but you can enjoy life! all of these dozens of hours spent sorting things from the 80s could’ve been spent making a beautiful quilt for your daughter. Or teaching her to make one. 💪🏻
Agree! I'm going to be 64 two weeks from today! I had to be *SUPER HONEST* with myself about what I'm actually going to take the time to make and what will continue to sit in totes and drawers! Oh and...even if I did make *everything* I had planned on making - would I actually have a use for it or the space to display it? And the truthful answer was - *NO* So I bagged and boxed it all up and off it went to Goodwill! Here's another hint: schools LOVE craft supplies! So that's another good donation idea!
Now I buy *only* what I am going to make *now* (like new curtains for my living room and my bedroom)
You are so right! This is such good advice, and the reminder of what she could do instead is beautiful. Let’s spend time together, not spend our time managing so much stuff. From now on, anyways!
I Love watching these two together, put me in mind of my mom’s and mine relationship. She was my first love and teacher. It’s wonderful how life ebbs and flows, now April is teaching her mom and the rest of us how to move through life with appreciation for our lives and anticipation of the next steps in the journey. So glad I found this channel.
Oh bless you, April, for giving your mother the joy and peace that she soo obviously desires and deserves. What was once The Depression Room is now a sanctuary of joy and serenity. 🧡🧡🧡💗💞💕💖
Well done, April, well done!
Thank you Paula! I love seeing the before of the space from 5 months ago. It’s a completely different room now!
Love watching your mom! She isn’t as indecisive any more. She is a woman on a mission! Great job to both of you!
The little breaks to check on sweet old Dirk and make sure he’s in a comfy spot are the best. Love that your mom has been able to let go of so many things that we’re getting in the way of doing what she loves.
What a difference you have made for your Mom. She now has a room she can actually use. Wonderful job
What a wonderful gift to your mother to have a beautiful, clutter-free, organized craft room. You have made her a space that will allow all her creativity to be nurtured for years to come.
You mom must feel so liberated. To have such a wonderful place to relax and recharge is such a blessing
My mom was a crafter/ hoarder and kept so much. All her stuff was donated and machines were sold when she passed and we only kept her favorite scissors and a sewing kit to remember her by. Your mom is lucky to have you organizing this for her. Visually pleasing and easy to find.
Well I am a crafter and I gave all my paper and cutting machines really all my card making supplies away when I was unwell. Now I’m better and regret it so much. I miss my things.
Hello. It's incredible that you are having conversations with Mom about de-cluttering. While my Mom was alive, there was this "understanding" certain topics were "off limits". Our family was left to sift through almost 40 years of accumulation in order to prepare her house for sale. I'm sure your Mom is enjoying sharing with others that which she feels comfortable enough to let go of and knowing someone else is being blessed with her "gifts"!😊
Oh wow, watching you guys go through the fabric stash and organizing and folding all of it so it fits into the shelves was really satisfying and will most likely be great motivation for your mom.
The before and afters made me gasp (and I’ve watched all the episodes!). I’m so proud of your mom and I don’t even know her. I’m so excited for her to have the calm space to create in! 💕
Thanks for sharing in the excitement Kristi! It’s so nice to make progress this round!
High 5 girls. What great job. The sewing machine table by the window, awesome idea. Bet your Moms creative side can't wait to get going again after this second declutter. So happy for both of you to experience this transformation together.
The craft room is looking great. Your mother definitely built up some decluttering muscles. Love this series. Good luck with your moving.
This made me cry. My Mom was a sewer and crafter as well. She went through a time in her 70’s when she weeded out what wasn’t going to get done. April, this not only made a great video series but I hope you will enjoy the priceless memories. It would have been wonderful if I had it made it a priority to take a few days off work while I could to help her instead of having to work through it afterwards. And the look of delight when you cleared a box of scrub tops, I hope your mom appreciates that!
Thanks Jenny 💛 it’s been so rewarding to build a business that gets to help my mom in her own space.
Such a transformation! If you ask your Mom I bet she’d say that her heart felt lighter. By going through all of those inherited and long collected items she’s no doubt let go of some emotions along with the belongings. Her craft room really feels like a comfortable space that houses the things are are important to her and will bring her happiness. I’ve enjoyed following the journey. An update whenever you’re back in Texas would be awesome.
Momma has come so far! Great job! So glad she has someone who loves her to guide her.
The Longaberger baskets are so much more nice to look at than the black bins. That's why I organize with them on my bookcases, especially. They also stand up to wear and tear for often accessed items, as well, because of the quality of them. They may not be as popular today as the 90's, but I enjoy using mine still.
I love as your mom declutters she’s better able to notice all the things she doesn’t need and is willing to part with. I consider myself organized and I always find stuff that I can let go of.
Such a challenge! When I retired and when our old dog died, I decided to fund our travels by renting out our house. I got rid of boxes and boxes of things from my parents and boxes of things from my children. I decided it was time to enjoy life and quit storing all the leftovers from my family and the unfinished projects I kept meaning to get to. The house now looks like a showplace! I have fun renting the house and decided what adventures we will have. Retirement in Spanish is "Jubilación" and Jubilation is what I feel.
I love this!!!!! And everything you said is so spot on. It’s amazing how freeing up the physical things in your life can make room for so many more adventures! Love this!!
Finally the craft room is an actual craft room! So excited for your mom to tackle more sewing projects in a reimagined space
Huge transformation! Love that she can see her fabric now and love that all those baskets of fabric now fit on the shelf. Love the shelf organization for the ribbon and bottles. Love the sewing machine getting the light from the window. Love seeing the pictures hung. Love how many containers you emptied and how much you were able to give away. Love Longerberger baskets so I'm glad she decided to hold on to them. LOL. Bet it is a joy for her to walk into that room now!
Seeing the before really makes it sink in just how much this room has changed in 5 months time!
I loved this even more than round one, because we really got to see your mom gain another fun room in her home. And all that while you got to film it for your channel AND the two of you spending precious time together going through old memories, what a win for everyone, including us viewers :)
Well done. Amazing how we also cause clutter in our parents home when we move out. Feel we need to assist them with it. And nice to talk through memories
Wow, such a great job!! You are so kind in helping everyone and don’t make them feel bad. What a wonderful gift for your Mom, she worked so hard too and must be so happy.
Such a great space for your Mom ❤😊
What a beautifully done craft room. Mum must be so thrilled, she can now find what she needs and wont be overwhelmed and distracted by other things. No frustrations in looking for things, just pick up and sit down and boom, sewing project beautifully done. I'm so happy for her. And less dust as well so less cleaning. What does dad think of all this 😂 you definitely are the WOman 🤣 I'm not a crafter in any way shape or form, but I have done an itty bit of work on junk journals and I store my "crafting" supplies in the little dresser my grandparents had for me when they raised me as a baby and that's also where I keep my organizer overflow. It is a very small dresser, fits in the electrical closet that 2' wide 🤣 as you say, make do with what you have. Btw, that little dresser must be 80 years old. I really do need to strip it, ugh. Lol. Will you be going back to visit at some point to do another pass in the next year or so? I can't wait to see where you live now. I hope izzy is ok with the changes. 😘💖😘💖😘💖😘💖😘💖😘💖🤗🐱
Thanks Brigitte! Journals can really take up space! My husband has a bunch too 😜 another pass isn’t out of the question, but we don’t have any plans for the yet. I’m so excited to share our Real life chapters with you guys on the other channel! Izzy is doing the best that she’s ever done in an apartment which is quite surprising!
I am so happy for your mother: wish we all
had girls like her .. other CZcamsrs do things for others, but you, Hermione Chantal and Shade Shannon both from the UK, consistently look after parents and grandparents and their needs. I feel so proud of you girls!
This video is 'off the charts"!!! Wow Becky, I am sooo impressed. You give me the courage to try new things.
The biggest win is realizing what she loves to do most and then the atachmentto the other things disapears.
That ribbon holder is such a great idea and you're so right - SO SATISFYING to find something that works perfectly amidst what you already have! Great job!!
I’m obsessed with your idea of the ribbon reuse. You’re so brilliant!!! And the fact that you always think that way is so freakin amazing!! Clearly I’m obsessed with your channel!! 🤣🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽😍
Your Mum is an absolute love. I'm so pleased you were able to help her give herself this room back, and to help shoulder the burden of grief decluttering for three separate people who have recently been lost from your lives - it's one of the most valuable gifts you can give to another, I think. To give Mama-April back some of herself, perhaps, and help her remember to do, rather than to keep compiling stuff to do. That room is just wonderful!
Oh my gosh, I cracked up when your Mom started stamping her feet over the fish! Amazing how much more goes when you peel the next layer of the onion!
I know you don’t agree with all things Marie Kondo, but one thing she (and you) definitely get right is that a complete declutter and organize where you make a decision on every object in your home, like what you all are doing, is so incredibly healing for the mind and spirit. Your mother’s mental health and well-being going into her older years will be leaps and bounds ahead of where she was before, thanks to your help. I am inspired by your huge generosity of time and energy to help your family get to a calmer, clearer space where they can dream and envision their next few decades without being weighed down by so much physical and emotional stuff!💛💛
It really does make a difference to go through each and everything… I think once that idea clicks for people, handle every single thing/no skipping over, that’s when the real change happens💛
I agree. You want to stay home more rather then out and about possibly shopping, lol
This must have been the day to watch this!! A few years ago I bought a Stamping Up starter kit...It has sat there neatly since. I am giving it away today. I have found that I am only keeping things that I love to do...Scrapbooking (I have limited what I have bought because I love a simple album with more journaling and pictures than all the frills. I am also a quilter and was given a lot of material. I've decided that this winter I will make patchwork quilts with all that material and only buy what is needed and keep my supplies limited and easy for me to get to. This was a very good motivator for me!!
Oh this makes me so happy to hear! Where did you donate the stamp set to?
Wow! What a great result. Your mom is lucky that you are gently helping her
I’ve thought about being a professional organizer. I love decluttering, but man, this shows how much patience you have to have, which I typically do. It’s just that I would still want to urge them to let go of so much more. I love my spaces almost empty, but I know some people really love their stuff more. It would be even harder if it was my mom. You’re very understanding with all your clients.
Oh and also, beautiful before and after at the end. I always love seeing the progress.
Clearing out old craft projects is rough at first, but so freeing in the end. When I moved from the west coast to the east coast I made some tough decisions, now I am glad I did! Great job!
Sweet Dirk!! Senior dogs are the best!!❤
This was a big transformation!! I think the longaberger baskets would look nice on the shelf, with fabric inside, folded into konmari squares. It might be an incentive to declutter some fabric to save a longaberger!
I liked the look of those with the yarn in them. As long as they’re not snagging things I would definitely use them.
@@sheila3936 maybe line the inside of a basket or two with fabric and then store yarn. Help to avoid any snags.
You all have made so much progress. I’m sure your parents feel so much better in their home. The craft room closet would look better if it was painted to match the room and the old carpet was removed though. Maybe your parents can do that later.
Haha absolutely. I’m hoping that I can one day do a third series and go through and change the floor throughout the house for them so that it matches and finish up all the unfinished projects.
You're mother did an amazing job letting go! What a beautiful finished room.
Absolutely beautiful April!! I am confident your mom is going to enjoy this room so much more!! No more depression room🎉👏🏻👏🏻
What a organized and creative space that is now. I’m sure being more intentional with the type of materials that your Mom chose to keep will make her feel way more motivated, not guilty for unused supplies glaring at her and inspired to do the things she truly loves❤ Great job ladies!! April I wish your mom could be a regular part of your channel in some way I have enjoyed so much “spending my Sunday morning” with her as well🤍✌🏼
This was great! I know your mother will be so happy with this room.
LOL, “this guy” is Don Quixote, a famous Spanish fictional character. He represents “ The Dreamer” in all of us. Love how you are reminding me to get control of my “kitch” as well. I can’t always get rid of it so I rotate it from my “kitch” stash. And…sometimes, I even let them go 😮😎
At 2:31,the statue in your left hand.😁 I thought the same thing,” the dreamer, how appropriate.” 😉
I truly appreciate watching you and your mom make decisions on what to declutter. I’m currently in the process of thinking through things to remove or not. It’s not easy!
It’s such a tough process! Hope yours is going smoothly and remember, it takes many passes!!
I wonder if the craft room will have a phase 3 and maybe get some cabinets with glass doors. All that fabric will get so dusty. Everything was contained in dust free bins and not accessible but now it will just get dirty.
I worked for years as an organizer, and I found that one small thing which reduces visual clutter is removing the stickers from your storage bins. I know it is not the priority at this stage in the process, but doing it helps more than you might think. Great job on this room-- it looks amazing!
I agree and I experienced this after years of "stickered" bins in my storage area! I finally peeled them off (but left my own labels to ID the contents) and i was surprised that it actually made a difference to me. I had no reason to keep the stickers on, except maybe laziness!
Haha I didn’t even notice the stickers. In the third pass (if) we’ll have time to take those off but we’ve just been focusing on decluttering for these passes.
I think you are absolutely right...decluttering takes several passes. I need to remember that...I get really overwhelmed and sometimes emotional about letting things go...so I need to let myself breath a little and move to the next item. Thanks for a great video.
I love repurposing redundant storage into new storage.
I had put the ubiquitous IKEA Variera plastic bag storage thingy in the OUT pile, as we only use jute shopping bags for groceries now. Then realised it was perfect for storing long tubes of gift wrapping paper.
You and your mom did an amazing job April! The "let's open the box and look anyway" because those decision muscles have a different perspective on the 2nd round. The repurposed CD rack was brilliant and meant to be a ribbon rack all along! Using free solutions in your house before buying new containers spot on because the amount of items shrink on the 2nd round and you don't know what you really need to contain until you get there. Thank you for the inspiration/ideas! Love your first vlog on the new channel and can't wait for the next vlog update and more Izzy supervisory meows. 😺
The second round 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 and can’t wait for more vlogs… Izzy will definitely be part. I’m sure she is eager to catch up with her YT fans 🫣🤪
What a functional and pleasant area for your mom to create in! I bet she will thoroughly enjoy sewing in there. I get how sewing machine placement is important. Light is crucial, not too much though. One of her quilts reminded me of my childhood. The one with the backs of kids in hats. My mom used that one all the time with us. It’s so cute! Thread and bobbin storage and organization is a serious matter. My mom and I have tried different setups but have never found one that ticks all the boxes. Now my daughter is joining the hobby. Maybe her generation will figure out the ideal system! Great job both of you. Happy sewing April’s Mom! And good job streamlining the fish. That stomp was so funny, lol! I love both of your senses of humor. I can’t wait to see what you both do with the shells, fish, and beach decor. When I was single I had my apartment bathroom in that decor. Got many compliments. Kind of miss it. I know it’ll look spectacular! Thanks for sharing! 🏖 🐠 🐚
I would love to go back and find an even better system for the thread. It works for now, but there are so many cute possibilities!
I kept waiting for you to put all of the thread in the sewing table! Imagine pulling it open as they lay on their side, sorted by color in rainbow order, along with a tray of bobbins of course! (Cue angels singing!) Seriously though, instead of thinking of it as a desk anymore, put the office supplies and notecards, etc. in the various Longaberger baskets on a larger wall shelf or baker’s rack type shelf. Craft stores sell nice tie on tags that you could label and hang on the handle outside of the baskets. The extra benefit of this is that,if she wants to write a card or two,she can just grab the basket that says “Cards, etc”, take it to her comfy chair in the living room, and have everything that she needs: cards, pens, stamps, address book. Then when she’s done, just put the whole basket back on the shelf. I think I’m about your mom’s age and both of these ideas already work great for me.( the writing basket and the glorious spool drawer)🙌🏻
A friend of mine uses her giant shells to hold bars of soap. Usable decor, an idea for your mom. Love your channel, I've learned so much on making my space more functional.
My mom was a seamstress and made clothes for my two sisters and I. How nice to see someone else enjoy going through material that sparks wonderful memories! The buttons also did it for us too. ❤ unfortunately, none of her talent was passed on 😁 job well done!
The buttons! It was so fun as a kid to sift through all of them and find our favorites!
ohhhh...the first stack of fabric you put on the shelf gave me goosebumps! lol This was another amazing space!
GOOD MORNING FR0M ALBERTA, CANADA 🇨🇦. I have been Decluttering for 3 years. And I feel in love with the house again 😍.
You could use the baskets to give gift baskets as presents. Maybe spray paint them all white so they match.
What a change! ❤
Well Done Ladies!! Organizing a quilters supplies is no joke. Good for Mom to let go of some of the 'fantasy self' supplies ..... I'm amazed at all the little projects I put aside for myself ... let it go 😃
I thought I would mention how much I enjoy the yellow background on your popup comments.....and....that you leave the comment up long enough for me to read. LOL The background music was very nice also. Of course, I love seeing the progress of your mom's craft room. Thanks April. LKMH
Great job🎉🎉
Congratulations April and mum. It looks amazing. Hope your mum is enjoying the room for all her crafts ✨ xx
I can’t wait to see you and your mom go through her wardrobe as she has some lovely things
I really love the book/fabric wall! Fantastic room for your mom now 💕. I would definitely keep those Longaberger baskets and use them! 😜
Great declutter! I'm pretty sure that Longaberger baskets are desirable collectibles, sold in antique/vintage stores--worth checking out their going price.
just found your channel and i have a cluttered craft room during pandemic i bought a bunch of stuff to craft with and now the health isn't very good.. so now decluttering it and i am watching ur channel while i do it.. thank you for the motivation.
Creative crafty homes are THE hardest to declutter! The only thing I do is make curtains and blinds and I've still got a small closet full of sundries.
Nothing says I don't actually read like color order bookshelves 😆
Bahahaha exactly. Or when they turn them around backwards to only see the pages 😜
Love it all! Wow looks amazing 👏! The ribbon thing is perfect. Love the clear oil racks and the book case is beautiful with all the fabric. So functional and spacious! Window looks perfect with just the blinds!
I love how you made space for the dog to be with you but up safe and out of the way. Sweet for mom and Dirk.
And for me too 😜 he would always find the best place to trip me, but that’s what let’s do 😜
This was so satisfying and brings back recent memories of decluttering and organising my own craft room. I also need to do a fourth or fifth pass, because I recognise that some crafts (stamping) need to be ditched.
God Bless you for doing this for your mom. She is so Blessed to have a daughter like you. My heart rejoices to see grown children do things for their parents. God Bless you!!!
💛💛 thanks Gina! I’ve wanted to help her do this since I was a kid! It’s fun to actually get to do it now.
We had to move out of our house into camper with our 2 dogs to remodel because of bad mold. My husband got diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer. Our house and buildings were broke into. We have got back into our house but with all the Dr appointments and him being sick .He has came 1st ! Things are not put away yet it's so hard but you & ur mom encourage me please tell her thank you .Thank you as well cause I don't feel so much alone !
I’m so sorry to hear that Teresa. I hope your husband is doing better, and Hoping your home will find some calm for you soon 💛
Absolutely love it!! Your mom must be so excited to work in that space now! ❤️❤️
Wow 😮
Wow! Truly remarkable! What a gift. Wonderful to show others it takes at least two decluttering sessions. I have a giant tote of longaburger baskets that I can’t seem to part with. They are cute but not super practical for organizing.
Think of them as totes and label with “tie on tags” that hang on the handle on the outside. Especially for a take along project. One could hold “hand mending”supplies, another with “dog brushes”, another with notecards, pen, stamps and address book. Put them all on a deep enough shelf or baker’s rack, then when you need to hand mend something, just take that basket to your comfy chair and then put the whole basket back when you’re done. I speak from experience,it works great! And you can justify keeping your baskets!🙌🏻
I love love love how the fabrics are presented! Just hours of creative fun waiting to happen😍
this is real- it makes me think of the book living with clutter when our older generation passes down the clutter
Great job! So soothing to see the after and watch how it came about. I love this series!!!
Yes X3 declutter before organizing! Good job and love your style!
It turned out so nice! Good work you two! I love seeing mom and daughter getting things accomplished together.
You are motivating so many people!! recently my mom started decluttering on her own after years of watching me be a minimalist and watching channels like yours. shes even helping my aunt, her sister who is a self described hoarder and can barely walk in parts of her 4 story townhome. She has 2 rooms packed full of books more than your mom if you can believe it. And over 100 longabergers bc she lived near the basket factory in Ohio. Good job everyone! Let’s change the future and stop buying things that will end up in landfills! Keep that money to retire early and use on experiences💚🌱🌎♻️
Oh I’m so happy to hear this! And yes I couldn’t agree more, it all starts with what we bring into our homes! Tell your mom to keep up the good work!! 💪
