Frame rates and shutter speeds explained with such flair and ease. I've been in the industry for 10 years plus film school and finally understand. Thanks Russell and RIDE. Holy Cow!!! :)
This was a really good tutorial. I already knew what to do with shutter speed, but to someone who had no information on shutter speed or frames per second, this would be sooooo helpful.
This was a simple and straightforward demonstration; thank you!
This is one of the best videos on youtube. Everyone who makes DSLR videos of skateboarding or not, you should watch it. Russell, you're the boss btw.
Thank you for making a video with some useful tips. There are a lot of videos that tell you to use the 180 degree rule and that's it. I will be trying these tips ASAP!
Also, an important thing when filming at night, I always expose for highlights as oppose to everything. Remember, color grading in post can brighten these if needed. During the day I agree with Seth, try to have your ISO as low as you can for sharper, more clear image.
Thanks for posting. Easy to understand.
love these videos, you should do one on shooting sequences!
I was literally looking for this today this is the best series keep it up
Thanks for sharing your Tips Russell !
these videos are soo sweet ! :) keep em comin !
thanks for this videos, they`re awesome tutorials
great comparison, very helpful! THX!
One of my favorite filmers. Dude had the best part in the new transworld video.
Thanks for this. Very helpful and enjoyable to watch. A+
Hay just shared your video on facebook as your video is the only one that is what every one need to watch :)
Holy crap! I learned a lot! Thanks a lot!
that was actually really helpful ive never found a happy medium with motion blur before
This guy is a legend.
This guy is hype! thanks dude
Very helpful! Thanks!
This is Legendary
Thank you for this great and simple explanation along with exact examples.
You probably dont care but does anybody know a trick to log back into an instagram account?
I stupidly forgot my password. I would love any tips you can give me
@Tristen Benson Instablaster :)
@Roger Shepherd I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm trying it out now.
Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Roger Shepherd It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my account!
@Tristen Benson Happy to help xD
thanks for this!
Great tips!
Great tutorial.
thank you !
You go to menu and enable Manual exposure or something a line that, I believe it's somewhere on the left side of the menu section. Also I would recommend you to get Magic Lantern, It's free and super awesome.
Soooo Helpful!!!!
ISO is how sensitive the sensor is. So it brightens your footage (or stills) but it makes the images more grainy. So during a sunny day i typically shoot at the lowest ISO i can get away with (i normally use 100 or 200 but it depends on what aperture and shutter speed you are using). I do this to get a less grainy image but still have the right amount of brightness. Same for shooting at night or in a dimly lit area. I still try to get the lowest ISO possible (i try not to go over 500)
Thanks mate!
yeah you can.
when in filming mode, you hit menu and select manual for movie exposure
next, when you re-enter filming mode on the bottom left corner you see a number . EX (250 00) and far right you see your ISO.
^Shutter Speed
on top of the ISO button you have the lil' scroller. that changes your shutter speed. the bottom left number as i mentioned before as ex of 250 is actually 1/250 .. scroll to changed from 1/250 to 1/400 1/1000 Etc.

yellow osiris hoodie Holy Crap!
+yellow osiris hoodie looks like a plane pulling a banner
more like a chinese flying dragon
= plane pulling a banner ad with artifacts
Thanks a ton!
you have to go into the manuel PHOTO mode and when you change the shutter speed there is transfers into video mode
Gracias
You have to 'conform' the 60fps clips to 30fps using something like Cinema Tools in order to see the slow motion effect it's meant to create. This should then make all your clips 30fps. Not sure if that helps?
Guys these tips are amazing, what program do you use to slow down your footage from 60fps. ???
That was great.
Kind of hard to say as it depends on conditions of lighting ect.. But if you haven't got it I recommend you get a canon 50mm 1.8f it's cheap and got a amazingly low aperture. I think every cinematographer has it, the low aperture means you can shoot really well in low light.
I think the 1/1,000 footage looks sick, it's smoother than real life.
Canon 50mm f1.8, Sigma 10-22mm that'll give you nice wide angle for a long lens follow cam and the 50mm will be good in low light and give a nice shallow depth of field for tripod shots etcc...
I was filming at 60fps with 1/125s Shutter, and it looked like i losed Focus... Thank you for this tips. I will try with the 1/500s!
THANKS
3:07 i'll remeber that tip, never thought of that!
yes, you can
So would it be better to shoot in an interlaced format? 60i instead of 30p?
What kind of mic are you using here?
Thanks for this awesome video by the way
This video is still valuable
thanks a lot ! :)
What do you recomend for a good shutter speed if I am shooting 60i??? LIke 1/250 or 1/500
go to video mode then go to menu then go to the first icon and then go to Movie exposure and set it to manual instead of auto...
What lense would you recomend apart from a fisheye?
For manual focus, should I video infinity focus??
Thanks! But is 50p also good for slow mo?
Go onto Manuel mode set your shutter and frame rate and press the record button
I'll put this in practice. I studied it years ago but I never thought of recording different. Let's have a try.
go to "menu" and set "movie exposure" to manual. Then you can adjust aperture and shutter speed :)
How about a tutorial on what the best types of lenses are for filming and photographing with a DSLR
Please make one about night time settings.......
This information apply to Panasonic HPX170?
when you exported this video to watch wouldnt you have to choose a framerate for it? I understand slowing down 60 for a 30 timeline, but i could barely see any difference in the 24, ive never really worked with anything but 30/60
how do i change the frame rate and shutter speen on my eos 600d?
with a fisheye whats the best way to focus.. just set focus to max and set apt to 8?
Besides the larger file size, what is the disadvantage of filming everything at 60fps than at 30fps.
a video where it is more fluid because of the motion blur. a lowered shutter speed will create a nice motion blur to make the video look more realistic and fluid. like he said when filming broll and scenery shots with a lot of motion, use a low fps and low shutter speed to get a more life like feel, it wont look like the best most high res video ever, but it looks so real that you feel apart of the broll.
also, broll is B-roll, just B rated footage. filller clips for a video, like guys sweeping
Can you help me? i have a JVC everio GZ Hm200 and i have a fisheye lens for it, but when i upload the videos to my laptop the lens always shakes back and fourth in the frame. is there anyway to stop this from happening?
on my T3I I can't change the shutter speed on video mode I dont think, someone please help
he is so right. DSLR footy needs to be lower. I tested today on 1/125 and worked a charm. was bummed on my GH2 till i did this.
What's a cheap camera to begin photographing skateboarding with?
Good tips. I couldn't figure out why my video was so choppy.
Thank you for this. I was shooting based on the 180 degree shutter rule, and the footage looked terrible. Now I realize that 30p 1/60 is too slow for skate footage
Would anyone know where the "FPS" is at on dslr's? I have a Canon t3i, but I'm not sure where to change the FPS on mine. Any help would be dope.
A camera that hasn't been made for 10 years but is still the most popular camera for filming skating.
HELPFUL! (Y)
Adobe After Effects CS6...if you cannot get this program, but use Final Cut, use Cinema Tools. ;)
What camera is he using?
whats with the anomaly in the sky at 1:09????
thats for films/movies
what mic and dead cat does he have? thanks!
Rode videomic pro
try reading the instruction manuel for your camera... it tells you where everything is
I'm confused by the last clip @3:00
Is is 30fps played back at 24fps?
If it was shot at 24fps, what speed is it played back at to appear slow motion?
Thanks for your help
Thanks
But the footage @3:14 looks like it was slowed down, yet it says that it was shot at 24fps, so I was wondering how that was possible
oh ok, I really thought that it was slowed down
Thanks
yeah i know. most people don't when when shooting low on a fisheye..so my point is why attach a viewfinder if your not using it.. but really my comments stupid cause its not that big a deal haha.
so my camera can shoot at 60 i, so what shutter speed do i shoot with 1/2000th?
120
yeah i need help with that as we'll
What kind of tripod was he using?
We need Beagle to do a 'In Focus'. He is king of filming! King of the VX1000!
heyy what is he doing 1.35 what is changing...
cud i recommend a 550d
go with 30fps. if u render it in 60fps the 30fps clips will become choppy
as a theater projectionist i learned that motion picture films (panavision) are played/shot at 24 frames per second. it s a lot of film.....what a wierd job that was..
Could you also use a higher shutterspeed for sports (1/500 or higher) on 30FPS and add motion blur in post as needed? So you still have the option for 4K stills that are crisp or just freezing motion. Or would adding motion blur in post not be able to smooth out the video or even look very different than actually filming using slower shutterspeeds?
I'm guessing background bokeh would be more blurry, what with having to open up the lens more. Or perhaps noisier if you have to slap more ISO in there to avoid shallower bokeh... Mostly when you can't control the lighting...
swag
i cannot find any of these.
"There is no right or wrong but this is how you do it"
Now if only the RIDEChannel would follow these steps when making their trick tip videos...
1:01 spelled footage wrong
it does take the piss but dslr's are so much cheaper for such high image quality when shooting film and are so adaptable. That said im shooting film on a sony handycam and photos on a nikon d3000 and still coming up with perfectly good results.
Dont begrudge them too much, more cameras going off the shelves brings down the price for true photographers.
oh jeah
