A few things: I decided not to include a clip in which I talked more about the border crossing situation. But I'll explain here that the big difference between crossing this border versus all the other land borders I crossed on this trip (from Switzerland to Liechtenstein to Austria to Hungary), is that I was in the Schengen zone for all of the past three months of traveling. So I never went through a border control anywhere, whether I was flying or crossing over a land border. Hungary is one of the Schengen countries. I've talked about this a million times before, which is why I decided not to include the clip. But as most of you will know by now, the Schengen zone includes 27 countries of Europe that don't have border controls between them. You can travel from France to Switzerland to Italy to Slovenia to Hungary, etc. and you never get stopped and have to show your passport.
But Romania isn't included in the Schengen countries, so you have to stop at the border, wait in a line and show your passport both to leave Hungary as well as enter Romania, which are two separate events. First your passport gets stamped by the Hungarian border agents as you leave Hungary, and then you move to the Romanian border agents who (hopefully) approve your entry into Romania. That's why I was concerned about whether they would even let me through, because sometimes remote border crossings can't be used by people who aren't citizens of one of the countries. But the fact that Romania isn't a Schengen country is one of the reasons why I was going there, because I was getting close to the 90 days limit and wanted to leave a few more days for later. I now have 11 days left in the Schengen zone, which I can use later at some point if I decide I want to go back to Hungary or to one of the other Schengen countries such as Slovenia, Italy, Norway, etc.
Also, I forgot to describe the people who picked me up. It was an older man and woman, not sure if they were a couple. The man was driving and the woman was sitting in the back seat. So there was no one in the front seat. But for some reason they had me squeeze into the back seat along with the woman rather than sitting in the vacant front seat. But whatever, I was just really grateful for the ride. They didn't speak a single word of English, but they were very nice. As I mentioned, I tried to give them the last of my Hungarian forint, which I figured they would be able to use the next time they went to Hungary. 4,000 forint is about $11 USD. But she was adamant that she didn't want to accept it.

Maybe another good news for you: Greenland and Faroe Islands are also not a part of the Schengen Area (they are even not part of the EU, although they belong to the EU country Denmark but are autonomous territories), so 90 days rule don't apply for them. Also the USA are a visa-free country there (as I saw on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark). So maybe it would be really amazing trip to go to Norway for last 11 days of Schengen Area (to visit Bergen and fjords or maybe Lofoten on the north) and after that Faroe Islands and Greenland (maybe even Scotland, also outside Schengen, can be included there in the middle) before returning to the USA.

It looks like by the end of 2023, Bulgaria 🇧🇬 and Romania 🇷🇴 will join Schengen and that border will disappear just like when Croatia 🇭🇷 recently joined Schengen early in the year.

@@dee74raz Aw man, that would really be a shame if Romania and Bulgaria joined as they're great places to travel to when you've used up your 90 days. I really think it's getting on time for them to revise the rules somehow. 90 days to visit almost thirty countries is very limiting for us long term traveler types.

@@ivonahofman8457 as far as i know on the west part of Romania, there are not that many lakes, so maybe that is why. On a related note i saw some news story that said that many hungarians come to shop for food in our country because it’s less expensive than in Hungary, even tho our prices went up a lot too. PS he said that they where fish in a bag, so my bet is those are fish for an aquarium.

In 1981 I hitchhiked from Austria to Hungary with my older brother.
After the border between Austria and Hungary, there was still about 1 km of no man's land. There we were checked 3 times by heavily armed border patrols until we were finally allowed to pass through the border station to Hungary.
    We survived. 😂🙃
It was a time and an experience that I don't want to miss anymore.

Hi Gabe: Interesting video of Hungary & Romania, two countries I have not visited so far. As far as US states are concerned, I have been to 28 (including the big 2 Hawaii (2021) & Alaska (last month). By the way, the eyeglass you mentioned is called a "monocle". It is made that way and is meant for one eye only. Used to be very much a fashion accessory for the British Aristocracy of yester years.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  Před 11 měsíci +7

It wasn't a monocle actually, it was glasses that were apparently broken in half, because it had the part that goes behind the ear. I just looked it up and it's called the temple. So it had one of those and one lens, whereas a monocle would be just the lens and maybe a string hanging from it. Where did you go in Alaska?

The proper way to hitchhike is from the Petrol stations. You can tell by the number plate where the cars are from/ likely to be heading.
This is especially the case if you're going really long distances.
The police stop you from hitchhiking on the road, because you can put other road users at danger.

Yours was directly next to the spa, but there are a lot of guest houses in that town who don't have many customers. Before the new highway was finished, a lot of Romanians who travelled to or from Austria/Germany slept there overnight, but since the highway is finished, Mako is a bit offroute.

If you get to Brasov, here's a couple of nice & easy hikes you can do:
    1. Tampa Mountain (you can get all the way to the "Hollywood" sign in 1h. You can also see the whole city from up there). Mind the bears on your way up heheh. Making a bit of noise should scare them away if they're around.
    2. Take the bus to Poiana Brasov then hike up (or take the cable cart) to Postavaru Peak. 2 hours chill hike to get up there. You should also be able to hike up and then take the cable cart down.
You can find both hikes on google maps

Arad was still a Hungarian city 110 years ago, which is why its architecture is so beautiful. In 1880, it was still a city with a Hungarian majority, today only 10% are Hungarian. The monuments are in very good condition, thanks to the Romanians.

I'm still processing the info that you have visited only 20 of the 30 United States. I've been in 49 of them (missed Alaska) and like to joke a little uncharitably that there's nothing to see in the middle. If we could just drop a lot of the states in the middle and mush what's left together we could be a much more efficient country. This view often is not well-received but I do look forward to watching you one day explore the empty middle.

Hi Gabriel, just an unreal experience I always call that divine intervention you can't explain it just happens. You are scratching out notes in a book you should be teaching this stuff in a Master class. I often wonder if you have an agent who consults you on trips and invests your money in other ventures. A kind of management advisor I don't know I might be prying too much just wondering. I'm always amazed at how you navigate around traveling to these different sites. There is a definite passion for traveling and experiencing different things.
