Oscar -1 was my primary site from mid 1979 to late 1980, when I was a missile combat crew member at Whiteman. My tour there was 1977-1982. A lot of good memories - thank you for this.

Oscar-1, which is shown in the video was the only LCF on an Air Force Base. I was stationed in Whiteman from 1975 to 1978. The map that was shown in the video was painted by me in 1978. What a surprise to see it! As a caveat, I visited Oscar-1 35 years after I left Whiteman in August of 2013.

I was stationed at Whiteman from 1976 to 1979, but I worked over at Finance. I toured Oscar-1 with my wife and my in-laws when they came to town. What a trip it is to see this video of it after all these years.

I was also stationed at Whiteman AFB from March 1975 - October 1978. I was in the Missile Comm Sq., Antenna Maintenance. We maintained the HF Transmitter, HF Receive, and the UHF Antenna (which looks like a missile nose cone sticking out of the ground). We also helped develop and install the entertainment system for the LCCs, which included installing a TV/Radio Antenna on a pole outside the building, installing an amplifier, running cables down into the ESSA Room and then to an AM/FM car radio (which we bought at Radio Shack) and also to the TV which was mounted in a special RF Filter Box to prevent interference with the other electronic equipment. The TV was located above the Capsule Commander’s seat and the Radio was located near the ceiling above the other Crew members chair.
We painted the UHF Antennas Red, White and Blue for the Bicentennial in1976.

That's pretty cool to see your map. I remember them being everywhere. Grew up within a few miles from Whiteman, then we ended at Nellis. I was a kid. Still remember that movie and I was still living there at the time.

We were much safer when we had these beauties on alert. I was stationed here and I am very proud to this day of my service. Being a Missile Launch Officer on crew is not easy but the rewards are there. No one really understands what we did and that is good. But we did this country proud by being there. As I said before, I am very proud of my time there. Years later, I ran into a guy in the UK who had been in MM Mod. I miss that dude so: Dom, wherever you, I hope you and the Mrs. are well. "Check air. Cool and adequate".

I was stationed at Whiteman AFB in the late 80s early 90s. 351st MSS Raider Flight. Stationed primarily in the Golf and Juliet Flight areas. Great to see this video, it sure does bring back a lot of memories.

Good video. I pulled many alerts over a 2 year period at Oscar -1. The sign on the gate is my effort to tell the dignitaries that visited who and what we were.

Wow! When I was on a Titan II missile launch crew, we had 1054 land based ICBM's. This doesn't include all of the nuke submarines. I hope we have enough.

There was a Control Facility preserved in MO, SD, and ND. I work at the one in ND as a tour guide. Other than those the Air Force still operates missile wings in Montana, Wyoming, and the Minot wing in North Dakota. Each of the active wings has 15 Control Facilities and 150 MM III ICBMs. Atleast for now the U.S. has a total of 450 active Minuteman Missiles.

Its amazing how in such a short span of time they had several different types of missiles, launch sites, and silos installed and then defunct. We had several Titan 2 silos in Arizona. Most of them were destroyed but they kept one as a museum. I find it interesting that they went from the huge 3 silo underground launch site to the minuteman 3 which is significantly smaller.

Back in the 80's and 90's my dad worked for the government in KC MO. Growing up we knew where we would be going if there was a nuke war! Sad the gov wasn't telling everyone else were they could take shelter.

Love it. Former MCCC/DMCCC in the 510th SMS 1983-87. Pulled 286 24-hour alerts in the 351st SMW....many of them in this very capsule. It's like seeing an old friend again.

ColoMilGuy I was Stationed at Whiteman in 1975 - 1976. I was Supervisor of Antenna Maintenance. We installed the TV and Am/FM radios for the crew entertainment in the capsules, as well as maintaining the HF Transmitter, HF Receive, and UHF Antennas at the LCFs. I think I still have a key for the lock located just to the left of the Capsule Commanders Console. Did you guys have a key to that lock? Another Minuteman LCC crew member told me they did not have a key to that lock. I thought they did. Do you remember what was inside that locked case?

Yeah. When I was on crew, it was primarily the US and Russia. Now all these other countries have nukes. I guess we need systems to take out more "exact" targets and not a whole town. Our missiles have much larger warheads now than we dropped on Japan. You would probably get a little different "reaction" from one of our modern warheads. I just hope we don't have to launch one of these.

Want some weird trivia? Closeup of the map at 1:05 shows the little village of Mora, Mo. Mora is the birthplace of Country music singer Leroy Van Dyke and also sports team owner (Colorado Avalanche - NHL and Denver Nuggets - NBA) Stan Kroenke.

The ground-based ICBMs don't move, sure, and hence are stationary targets once found...but that's the point.
An enemy will Have to spend hundreds of warheads trying to hit all the ICBMs they can in a 'first strike'....but then the strategic bombers and SLBMs guarantee our retaliation.
That's the policy that backs up deterrence, and no enemy can win against that strategy

Is this MM control center actually in MO? I thought all of the MM sites were totally destroyed except for one control center at Minot AFB. I may be wrong but I don't think so. I was a Titan II launch crewmember at McConnell AFB in the 70's.

unfortunately, mobile launchers were also far less accurate, reliable and expensive. When it comes down to it: hardened silos were far better than nukes on trucks.

Yep, a museum now, that I think is still open for people to tour. Saw some old silos listed for sale online a few times. Some are a bit different depending on it's purpose. Back then they were everywhere in Missouri. Never heard of them imploding but interesting about the PCBs, wouldn't be drinking the water if I ever went back to visit.

Just enough to destroy the world ten times over. We could use a few more. Actually the Minuteman itself was originally supposed to have a number of 10,000 but they cut back. As if 1000 wasn't enough. ;)

Silo at 1086 Red Fox Rd Otterville, Mo -- get a satellite view -- The Ukrainians use it for what appears to be a patio. None of this info that we found on a government site was included in the contract because how else would it have been sold? We had a well usage agreement with them until their house burned down & later I had my own well drilled, much past 2 feet-- their basement of my house interferes with drainage? Yikes - That explains a few things. These "Ukrainians" spoke nothing amongst themselves but "Ukrainian" & I felt at the time that whatever was so secret wasn't a good thing or they'd be saying it in English, right (?). Not be terroristic. It all seems now like it was a huge hate-demonstration by them, just look up that address to see where they've built! Plus, now we're poisoned because them selling their property was much more important than upping with the fact that it's a "blighted property" wtvf? Who do we call? How do we get help? The missiles were once pointed at Russia so the thing to do is build a house on top of the former site to what? Mock us? I'm totaly freaked these so-called Christians would do such a thing!
Too jangled to continue without blowing a gasket -- Happy 2022
    The info we found
    dnr.mo.gov/document-search/minuteman-ii-deed-notice-request-form
"II. (B) No water wells will be installed on the Property. (C) Except as approved in advance, in writing, on a case-by-case basis, by the appropriate Federal and State Environmental Regulatory Agencies, their successors or assigns,
activities which may cause physical penetration and ground disturbance below a depth of two feet beneath the surface of the Property is prohibited. Such prohibited activities include but are not limited to soil excavation, trenching, and installation of building foundations, footings, pilings, or supports, if such activities will extend below a depth of two feet beneath the surface of the Property.
