Mauricio Flota, your name Mauricio is a name that was common among the ancestors of Andulisia Spain, aka, Islamic spain, which was highly noble and renowned. they mixed often with norse people. there is a lot to say about Andulusia, it was similar to valhalic cultures in many ways. and ended up being highly noble like a lot of valhalic cultures, French, Germans (for a time). you might want to do some research about it, your are at 98%probability related to them, your name only comes from that culture

I am very happy our history finally got recognition. You think the Vikings were some kind of fantasy. To us they are very real. Jörgen Sköldenborg (Shieldwall in Swedish). Thats actually my name and I am proud of it. Best wishes =)
Mitchell Sherry historically speaking no one is sure what Berzerker means, it is disputed as either coming from the old norse words for bare and shirt meaning not wearing armor as men of odin or from a germanic version of the word for bear and shirt meaning wore the pelt of a bear into battle. What is agreed upon however is that they went into some sort of trance like frenzy at the beginning of the battle and there were myths about them dulling enemy blades with spells, change forms into an actual beast and things like that. As the only requirement being clothing and attitude they did not have to be "vererans" and in king haralds saga the ynglinga saga and the grettirs saga it didn't mention 2 handed pole axes in the depiction of these warriors. Also in many of the old drawings of them they wield spears which makes sense* since they are very closely tied to Odin, with their shape changing immunity to weapons spells and such and were theorized to be members of a cult to Odin. Historically its all very vague and most of what is written is superstition as the practice was outlawed in 1014 so... where do you get this claim about 2 handed pole axes?
The real Berserkr have just a great rage, primal rage Rollo is not a Berserkr (Berserkr= Bearman with a primal rage) (Svinfylkingars= Boarman with primal rage) (Ulfarks/Ulfhednars= Wolfman with primal rage) "Sorry for my english"

jacob combs If you ever saw a grizzly you would know why they are called bear shirts.
When the other groups of Vikings formed a shield wall, the other party should have formed Boar's Snout. A triangular position mean't to break shield wall.
I have a theory according to which Rollo could be a berserker. As I read in previous comments, he uses the same weapon. Not to mention that he doesn't wear any armour. Berserkers were also believed (in some legends) to change into wolves. That's a bit where the werewolf legends come from. They had a wolf skin as a cloth. I know Rollo doesn't, but one last thing. The name Rollo is a variant Rolf, an ancient way of saying wolf in German. That is only but a weird theory, I doubt the writers wanted to make him a berserker. But his character was inspired from Rollo the Duke of Normandy, ancestor of William the Conqueror.
The word Berserker is a mix of bear and serk which is something you have over your shoulders, a cape if you will. Berserkers wore that and nothing else and made themself go crazy with fury and charged their enemy who though they were up against rabid bears.
MrTheDratex That's interesting. There are many legends about them and the ones I know describe them as wolf-like (and they kinda initiated the werewolf myths, apart from the greek origins)
The "viking language" in Denmark its called dansk tunge, the experts think it's was Icelandic with a accent. They think Berserker means dressed in bear skin or dressed in nude they was seen as gods in the eyes of the society and that is why the drawings of them looked like men with "horns" but of course no viking had helmets with horns in them, they was seen more like a halo be course they was granted access to Valhalla and to fight with odin and the other gods
Fun fact the saxons got the last laugh against the vikings in the battle of Stamford Bridge i think it was, but the vikings were ferocious warriors in battle gotta give them that
I wonder what those Norsemen back then would do to the gangs of Middle Easterners and North Africans who come in modern time to the european continent....
+GP189 They were actually very nice people. They welcomed the christian preachers and... eventually converted to christianity. Something to think about.
+Yannick20 I doubt the Christians raped and stole from the northmen, while disrespecting their culture and demanding special treatment. And I believe the Christians who did that may have met an early end.
Viking boys were taught from childhood to fight with the ax or sword with either hand. When Danish vikings fought they would switch hands in mid battle, throwing off the opponent. They were large people and used brute force.

FEROCIOUS AND AWESOME!!! The Vikings were real sweeties, real bad boys, and REAL FEARSOME WARRIORS (somewhere between the Scottish Picts and the Irish in terms of ferocious fighting elan', fierceness, skill at arms, sheer bravery, and balls out insanity, with the Picts being at the top of that bloody heap of dead and butchered bodies, usually that of Roman, Germanic and Norse Viking corpses)! Any ways, what a fucking wicked pissa and enjoyable clip, as the music fit the brutal and violent visuals, all of which was seamlessly melded together! GREAT job, and what a splendid, lovely, sweet and euphoric inducing video!
+Taylor Ahern Though as ultra bad ass as the Vikings could be, NO ONE could cow or decisively defeat the wild and crazy Picts up in misty and mountainous Scotland, or certain fearsome and bloodthirsty Irish tribes, all of whom featured berserkers aplenty (the Irish and the Vikings were about even in that respect)!
+Taylor Ahern Again here you go with you made up history. Tell me of the battle where you say the romans were defeated. Give evidence of it through archeology. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mons_Graupius From what I can find in the situations where the Picts did face the romans, and we have sources for it, they were mangled horribly. Not because they were cowards, of course, but they faced with numerous advantages. Just being wild doesn't make you a good fighter. The vikings were good because every free man wore arms and were expected to be able to defend himself. I doubt that you have served time in the military or ever been in a fist fight so I'm not sure if your outlook is the slightest realistic.
Zek Schron I was talking about the picts. You claim the picts were so above and beyond everyone. But it's just talk. Historians aren't even sure that the legion mentioned was actually lost in Scotland. So again, when did the picts actually defeat entire legions and wipe them out? Why would they be the best warriors ever and all of those fantastical calims you make? It sounds silly beyond belief.
I see your point. And it was brilliantly and convincingly articulated. Though one thing about the Picts, they were consistently Great at PICKING fights. For to Pick a battle with a Pict would please such a wild and primitive human specimen no end😊😊😊😉.
Lol very true but the same could be said for all of the celtic and grmanic tribes of Europe. And the reason why: We all basically had the same gods with Odin and Thor being the main ones.
Wargus SonofOdin Maybe. But that easily? No. No way. Besides, it's not like each and every single viking fighter is built strong enough for the job of hacking through armour. And that's without mentioning the axe.
Mildly unrealistic, but enjoyable nonetheless. It avoids the reality that the Danes would have fought in much the same manner as the Welsh, the Saxons, or the Frisians: in a shield wall, in a slow and ordered advance. Historians disagree on how closed the shield wall was, but in any case it would have been close order and careful probing with spears rather than the slaughter we see here. That manner of butchery would only occur rarely, and generally after one of the shield walls loses its cohesion or is enveloped by the other. Also the armor makes me want to cry.
@Marco Biancardi: Romans became great through logistics and politics. In battle they did not fare as well, often suffering brutal defeats. Also: Alot of the troops they valued and depended on the most were auxilliary Gauls, Germanics, Eastern and African.
Maraak .Nor "Romans became great through logistics and politics. In battle they did not fare as well, often suffering brutal defeats." Name one empire that didn't suffer some setbacks. Most of the time, the Romans did pretty darn well in battle, and logistics were far from the only reason why Rome became a great empire. In the 3rd century BC, before Rome became great, there were plenty of other kingdoms / states / republics with similar or superior logistical capabilities, and yet it was Rome that went on to conquer the Mediterranean world.
Maraak .Nor Please don't make ridiculous generalizations and hopeful suppositions without citing one single shred of evidence! Furthermore, be logical how could the roman empire 'not fare as well in battle' when they laid low most of the known world, held their empire for almost 1,000 years and only with a maximum of 144,000 troops at one time? (these figures are well known facts) they seem like they were an extremely capable fighting force, their strength was not in each soldiers individual skill (above-average or good at best) but their uniformity as ultra-disciplined soldiers that made up the most formidable fighting unit the world had ever seen (second to that of the Spartans of course the only difference being they didn't have the numbers to support an aggressive expansion).
They were good at subjugating after having learnt from the italian allies' revolts to balance control with autonomy, the carrot and the stick. They lost many battles, but won the war(s) through clever politics and ahead-of-its-time logistics. They could take losses much better than most of their opponents. This all mean they could keep the pressure up on enemies that stood divided. Take a lookie at how they fared when they ran into enemies too far away for efficient logistics and too unified like the Germanic tribes or eastern empires, who unlike the Gauls and Iberians, were better at putting aside internal conflict when they _had_ to. And I notice you're not citing much evidence either, for all your hyperbole.
Maraak .Nor I'm not citing much evidence because of the simple fact that my figures are not debatable they are KNOWN fact reached through years of scholarly debate and eventual scholarly consensus while yours simply come from exaggerated subjectivity and emotional guesswork. In fact my 'hyperbole' is quite conservative in its'estimates just look at the work of leading authorities such as Ridley, Badian and Earl. No doubt did Rome sustain her empire through clever politics and extreme meticulous methods of organisation but its' military prowess was second to none. Examples include the cimbri and the teutones who Marian as consul crushed in their advancement to Rome in battles such as Aquae Sextiae and Vercellae (these tribes were BOTH GERMANIC and unified) in the early second century BC (also a common fact no need for a citation since it is consensus). Not to mention victories against Germanic tribes in Germania such as the battle of Wesler River (16 AD), battle of Lupia River (11BC), battle of Vosges (58 BC) and many more. The defeat of the Gallic tribes at the hands of Caesar. Britannia was also located by Roman standards in the far reaches of their known world and still their 'logistics' worked fine against the British as shown through its occupation as well as the quelling of massive rebellions such as the battle of Watling Street were the Roman's were cited by tacitus to have fought 80,000 with 400. Although these figures have been admonished by Webster and Bulst as being inaccurate. More like 10-12000 against 210000 of Britian and her allies (Still though severely outnumbered- look up the works of Webster and Bulst if you have any doubt of the veracity of this evidence). The Roman's therefore often demonstrated that their organisation of resources (or logistics) worked very well even against unified and daunting odds and it was occasional that they suffered decisive defeats compared to their amount of victories...other instances include their conquests of Asia Minor and Judea.
why would someone who is in a defensive formation as the shieldwall would run right towards sharp pointy pieces of steel? this is obviously not the way charges were done in antiquity and middle ages...

Rollo is clearly a berserker. He always carries a much larger axe.
fighting behaviour is more important then the weapon used. when it comes to berserkers, not only berserkers use big two handed axes.
Historically speaking berserkers were veteran fighting men and always carried a 2 handed pole axe to distinguish themselves as veterans.
Mitchell Sherry

It avoids the reality that the Danes would have fought in much the same manner as the Welsh, the Saxons, or the Frisians: in a shield wall, in a slow and ordered advance. Historians disagree on how closed the shield wall was, but in any case it would have been close order and careful probing with spears rather than the slaughter we see here. That manner of butchery would only occur rarely, and generally after one of the shield walls loses its cohesion or is enveloped by the other. Also the armor makes me want to cry.
You know what's funny? In the Netherlands FOX has the rights for Vikings
Watch, the Vikings are clearly outnumbered and have less good armour but yet they STILL WIN
ROLLOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

In battle they did not fare as well, often suffering brutal defeats."
Name one empire that didn't suffer some setbacks.
The Roman's therefore often demonstrated that their organisation of resources (or logistics) worked very well even against unified and daunting odds and it was occasional that they suffered decisive defeats compared to their amount of victories...other instances include their conquests of Asia Minor and Judea.
well no one warned about spoiler but its ok

Did the warriors in the later seasons forget shieldwalls?
why would someone who is in a defensive formation as the shieldwall would run right towards sharp pointy pieces of steel? this is obviously not the way charges were done in antiquity and middle ages...
