Bands like Mae and Celldweller did this years ago and it was very successful. Celldweller's 2012 album "Wish Upon a Blackstar" was released one song at a time each month. Kept fans engaged all year and excited every month for new music and content. GREAT IDEA!! You could do cool virtual release parties each month. Happy to join and support new music!
I had no idea Celldweller had done this. I stole the idea from rappers! Haha. Either way, happy to have you on board!
He did "chapters" more specifically. Black Star chapters were 2 songs + instrumental tracks. End of an Empire got fancy and had 2 songs + a heap of remixes (and instrumentals of everything) on each release (like your remix of Heart On). The End of an Empire approach worked especially well on me, felt like I got a lot of mileage out of every chapter and track.
Definitely excited for a steady stream of AP.
Yeah I remember being so excited for Wish Upon a Black Star, it took a long time but finally all the songs were released and I got a hard copy of the album. It was amazing. I hope it works for you too!! I love Aesthetic Perfection! :3
@@diorikmagnison Aesthetic Perfection remixed Heart on, one of my favorite songs of Celldweller? Did I live under a rock goddamn? 😆 OK to be fair, I just hear electronic music since 2016, before I was a "full macho everything besides metal is shit guy". Haha. End of an Empire, altough one of my favorite albums of Celldweller (if not my favorite besides Wish upon a Blackstar) was a year before.
For me back then there were no boys allowed 😆 Needed to bring that pun, I don't like myself of the past but well we are all evolving (hopefully).

I highly recommend joining the Patreon. There is so much great insight into the musical process from working with ideas, the creative and hands on work, vocal training and experimenting with styles, a great community of lovely people that live and breath music and on top its unique independent music!

the amount of work and stress you put into this.. is the real indication on how much music means to you, Daniel- and im glad it does. if it wasnt for you and your music, i would have never understood so many emotions i was going through. i have never been a fangirl/boy about artists or whatever, but i have always felt AP / NR have always been a part of me

It's a great idea, though I'm an album listener myself (i sit down and listen, analyse etc) what I've seen with my fave (symphonic) metal bands is that they do a count down with singles until the release and release albums apart from few months apart from each other, like they made schedule together lol. And a lot of interaction with the fans (floor Jansen for ex. gives master classes now, does story time and interviews other people in the scene or even outside of the scene, does covers). I think it also depends on the kind of core audience you have. I think it's a great idea that you have and hopefully 2021 is going to be less of a bully for everyone!

I miss too much that energy, I miss the harsh vocals and the concept that was created at the time.

You are so charismatic and engaging w your fans. I think you will help people who aren’t as knowledgeable by giving them incentive to learn these new platforms. It’s understandable to ask what fans want, but at this point, fans are willing to adapt to what you want to do (you know us better than we know ourselves)
I think there's a bit of push and pull involved in the fan - artist relationship. Artists are stupid if they don't listen to their audience, however that doesn't mean they should cater to their every whim. Being an artist is about understanding what people want, predicting what they will want, and figuring out how to incorporate your own vision into that. It's... complex. 😃

This is what my band decided to do to stay relevant. I noticed singles get way more track plays than releasing a bunch of shit at once.

Dan, if you think about it you're suggesting going full circle: at the beginning of Rock & Roll EVERY artist wrote singles exclusively, all of them. Bill Haley, Elvis, Buddy Holly, etc. Albums were a gimmick designed to make more money off of singles. I like your idea, if the music biz is going down the crapper why not try to return to the source?

Have you checked out what the hardbass scene is doing? They mostly do one off singles, then drop them in compilations or albums. With the first release on CZcams then the other streaming outlets
It's not really a scene I follow but it makes sense. Solo producers have the luxury of being able to release music without dealing with band politics. It's much easier to record when you're alone with a computer than 5 guys in a studio.
Much easier! Some of the producers are a duo or at most three people, but there does tend to be alot of collaboration in the scene almost like the old school industrial days in Chicago.

I think it's a good idea. If I was still involved in more social media (kind of checked out such things a while back myself, mostly for mental health) I would have voted for singles. Albums are nice and all, but like you've said, it's a lot easier to sit down and go "huh, sure, why not, I'll give it a shot" if it's only five minutes. It's also a lot easier to come back to the song when you're in a different mood and listen again, doubly so if at first your original opinion was "uhh... hmmmm.... huhhhhh..."

Meh I'm not over the moon about it as I'd prefer an album to listen to in the car etc... But things have got to change, so go for it! It's got to be worth a try.
That's just the thing: If enough people put their money where their mouth is and demonstrate they'd like a full-length album, they'll get one! 😃

It is interesting as you get to listen to one track at a time and then hear it as a whole.

I think this is really cool, BUT my only reservation is it punishes or rewards individuals for the behavior of a group. It doesn't matter how much money I donate, but if other people don't also join, then no one gets the reward. That makes me very anxious as an "investor."
If that's the way you want to look at it, sure, you're right. You're investing in a project without knowing if it will be funded. But it's always like that, right? But you invest in the things that you believe in because you think they can succeed.
One key point I want to make is that I'm not punishing my audience or withholding music from them if I don't reach my goals. I'm not sitting here on 12 songs that are ready to go waiting to release them. So far I have 2 songs ready and the rest will be produced as we go. If I don't make the goal, I have to push a release back, focus on that and pick up again the following month. If a song doesn't get released it's because it doesn't get produced!
A very interesting plan ... maybe also for us ;-)
I certainly hope other bands follow this idea. I don't claim to have come up with it, but I think it's great!

@@ClosetoHumanMusic maybe you could do some like a collaborative fan video? Devin Townsend did something like that for his Lucky Animals single. Maybe a concept or a theme for the video and see what everyone creates, then have what you like compiled in a video? I think that would be pretty cool, and really engaging for the fanbase. It could be an equally creative outlet for everyone not able to travel or get around much during lockdowns. Maybe even having fan made remixes of the singles kind of like how Trent Reznor did with his Year Zero album?

Yes indeed! Each track has a hard goal number to reach, but the increments are in 10. So if I get 20 new Patrons today, the February single is unlocked!!!

You think? I thought an album was about being a time capsule of the artist's tastes and skills at a given point in time. For me, I'm stretching this timeline out longer to give a snapshot of my world over the course of a year.
And that's super noble. It totally can work and will definitely pay out. I guess I've just always preferred listening to songs bundled together as one whole thing as opposed to one and done singles. Might just be a difference in attitude towards album formatting. I just remember buying Wish Upon a Blackstar by Celldweller and just feeling dumb since I already had all the songs on the album already.

Why fuck that? I think one song per month is a very reasonable goal considering all the work that goes into production, mixing, mastering and PR. And given the fact that in order to undertake this endeavor I have to stop all my side gigs like remixing, production and commissions I need to put food on the table, too. All I'm saying is: here's my idea, if you're into it, help me make it happen. If not, then the idea crashes and burns.

@@thisistactical You prefer albums, that's fair... so do I. However, it's not really about what we as individuals want, it's how artists can keep creating and stay relevant in a changing world. This won't be like an album. It's an art project where the songs will be written and released across an entire year. The concept, sound and vibe will change as the world changes. As I release songs I will get feedback which will inform how the future songs are written and approached. I feel like this is a fresh idea in a stagnant scene. Not into it? Totally okay. But that doesn't mean it's not what's necessary for the current moment.

Not exactly: After singles are released they are free and public... like all of my music. The campaign is intended to bring people into the community who want to support me and help me make this dream a reality. It's very expensive and time consuming to release one new single every month. 😉
