Great tribute. The F-14 was born out of the F-111 controversy. After a painstaking process the Navy had, with the exception of the TF-30 engine the most superb Air superiority/fleet defense fighter ever conceived. So, as it aged instead of continually evolving the platform & improving it like the Eagle, they trash it and replace it with an arguably inferior aircraft. GO NAVY!
This reminds me of doing plane guard ops in the IO while we were escorting the Kitty Hawk during a WESPAC in 85. I feel sad.... Ex twidget, USS Badger (FF-1071).

The F-14 had Mig's, Bears, Badgers and Su's of the U.S.S.R. clearing an aircraft carrier's airspace before it was launched off the deck of the carrier. Once, the F-14's were launch, they had enough speed to catch up with the Mig's and other Soviet aircraft before they got out of the carrier's airspace.
Stalling per se is not desirable unto itself. But aerodynamically unstable aircraft are more maneuverable. Designers must strike a balance between instability and maneuverability when designing fighters.

The F is the mission of the acft, F=fighter, A=Attack and so on.the 14 ,16,or 18 is the design number, it went through so many design changes until on the 14, 15th etc it was excepted, last letter is the series of major mods made to the acft. So We have Mission, design , and series.
"The F-14 has a terrible turn radius, terrible climb radius, and a terrible acceleration because it sucks" The tomcat at sea level can out turn any 4th generation fighter due to it's airframe configuration and variable geometry wings. Btw, you can just come out now and admit you work for Boeing since your whole page is devoted to bashing Tomcat, without Hard data to back you erroneous claims.

They happy with a substandard fighter because the NAVY ( and the U.S.) is broke, ever since the A-12 debacle. The pilots take what they can get with a smile. The "super" hornet is a half-baked cobbled together version of the original F-18 series, with degraded performance, its huge LEX, tiny engines, and ~30 min cap loiter. Retiring the F-14B/D+ for the "super" hornet is the equivalent of retiring all F-15s & replacing them with F-16 block 60s, & then claiming the Viper is better. Poor logic.
This is the most successful fighter in the us navy F-14 tomcat thank you for 40+ magnificent years

The F-18 maybe inferior in some respects, but it is more suited to Navy operations today.
That's not true, Navy planes need more range as they are on floating bases, for example. One day the Navy will regret their folly.
