Thanks! I enjoyed this discussion. I’m a big fan of Clive Barker. He mixes horror with elegance, and his monsters are often not the villains of his stories. “Faustian” is exactly right; the Cenobites are transactional monsters, bound by a code. They only come when called. And as an atheist, I don’t believe in an afterlife, but this doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story. Full as it is of supernatural elements, it dramatizes a lot of real, lived human experience.
Glad you liked it! -- Totally agree, Barker's work is scary regardless of what you believe because he personifies destructive forces that are very real to all of us. The cenobites and the box are a great device for illustrating the kind of evil that, more often than not, we invite in ourselves.
