Welcome back to another episode of Not Today, Pal. This week, Rob and Jamie open the show with some thoughts on tipping. Tipping culture is a major hot topic that divides society as Jamie and Rob tackle the different kinds of tipping, including take-out tipping. The TV sibs also get an email asking for some parental advice regarding some cousins, plus some Sopranos trivia, and a Memory Lane.

My simple rule on tipping is that I only do
It after I have received my service. Why would I tip someone at a coffee shop before they have even given me my drink? The service might suck. Then, if the service is good or the staff are friendly or helpful, I’ll throw cash in the jar before leaving.

First off, I hope you’re having a good day. I’d like for it to be known that I work the food service industry and I know times are hard for everyone with the exception of the 0.1 percent (globally). That being said shit has doubled in price for EVERYONE, including food service workers. In most states (with the exception of California, New York, and Hawai’i restaurants can pay people whatever they want and so most people live SOLELY on tips. If you can’t afford or don’t care to tip well then don’t go out. I don’t. I stay my broke (for now) ass at home.

@@occulus21 From a foreign perspective ... this tipping in only one industry is ridiculous and just helps to prop up too many bad businesses or tight employers that want to profit from paying less to their workers. However if all goods and services across the board have risen (doubled) in recent years... then that the 20% tip 5 years ago has also kept pace with the inflation of the food prices from 5 years ago. So there should be no need to increase tips to 30%

@@nicholkid but the purchasing power continues to dwindle. In the US $50 would get you a cart full of food in 2000. In 2024 you get a bag with maybe 3 or 4 items. It’s going to go up to 30 regardless due to inflation. There is no such thing as unlimited growth. It’s like raising the minimum wage. Eventually the minimum wage will be $50 and tips will be 90% because the dollar gets weaker and weaker.

The whole tipping culture in America is nuts just pay the workers a good living wage, I'd rather pay more for the goods so this can happen. I'm from the uk and the only place it's really expected is a restaurant(why i don't know) and thats only if you've had good service. Everywhere else is totally optional, if someone gone way above and beyond I'll tip them, but most large national business(I've worked at several) the staff are not allowed to except tips or gifts from customers it's a sackable offence. You guys being shamed into tipping even when you've not had good service or even any service is nuts.

Regarding take out or order at the counter places, out of principle I don’t tip for service before I receive that service/what I ordered. There’s been so many times I’ve pre-tipped at the counter and they’ve messed up my order or given bad/mediocre service that didn’t deserve one.
Sit-down restaurants where you pay at the end, I usually tip 20% as long as the server does what I believe is the minimum.. refill water without asking, checking in, and friendly service.

Blue Diamond is almonds, blue buffalo is dog food. And in California you get 16.00 an hour plus tips, and even at Olive Garden you’ll average 45 bucks an hour. You do not need to feel guilted into 30% or more-those people make more than almost anyone. They also often don’t claim their income accurately so they don’t pay the taxes that most people making 90k a year make. And it’s illegal to have them tip out 5% to back of the house, that has to come from the business. So stop feeling guilty that the person who got your order wrong and couldn’t bring you a single refill is only getting a 25% tip- if they work near full time here they’re making close to 100k.

Yet, we tip out the restaurant staff 4.5% of that for tip share and then we get taxes taken out since everything is on a weekly paycheck. So after all is said and done- we get about 12% of what your subtotal was. Extra is definitely appreciated!!

I receive tips on my job. I don't expect them, but they are appreciated.
There are some people who say "Keep the change" when they are speaking about 25¢. I don't judge. Others will hand you a hundred dollar bill for a $30.00 tab and say "Keep it", or "That's yours."
When you tell the latter that it's not necessary they know.
The worst tipper to me has nothing to do with the dollar or percent amount. The worst tipper is the one who takes all their money back and then counts out a tip back to me. I'd rather have the quarter when bartering for time.
I'll get an occasional customer that I end up tipping in the end because they can't afford the bill. I judge them a little bit, but I take the loss.
It all pans out. The best pay for the worst, the good cover the bad, and my time has a value.

Many years living in a big city, I tip very rarely though I like to tip. Just rarely buy stuff where it's an option. I make my own food and coffee. It makes no sense to pay extra for someones service, for them to make my food and for me complain about taking care of people providing me good work and service.
You can of course think whatever you want, complain all you want but the reality is, these people have a choice in how to interact with you and how to provide service/make your food/experience. Some low level laborers for little hourly pay providing me a service I volunteer to buy, a convenience and luxury for me, I want their care energy and effort but out of principle I don't incentivize the laborers? I can say I shouldn't have to, but again how you are treated will vary and always be a choice and you are not sticking it to the man or changing the world, you are not helping low level workers out of principle and they are of course probably at least helping the person who tipped them first or with more energy and care. No complaints will change that, who would you want to give more effort to?
I'm not paying for the food or the companies product, I'm paying for good service someones care in making my food. Sure if I don't give a f, I don't have to tip or expend any energy toward gratitude thanks or kindness. But it's pretty fair to expect little care going into my service, to expect at best a bear bones product and service. Treating people like that will effect the quality of the service and relationship with those people in future interactions. All things are situational, it's not always money. I'd rather treat people well and make these low income hard workers happy, pay a little extra and have a great meal, service, product, experience if I'm paying for a convenience/luxury like someones service. Rather than be a stickler and barter to make sure I pay as little as possible. With experience i think it's easy to see the guy trying to nickel and dime is more likely to be taken advantage of or get less quality in these scenarios. But to each their own 🙏✌️

Many places stick their servers on pickup so they are still getting paid like $2-3/hour and do have to work to make sure your order is correct. I have no issue spinning that iPad back around with 0 tip at most places that try to guilt trip you into tipping when all they did was hit 3 buttons on a screen. I worked food industry for 12 years as a chef and I tip 30% or more at restaurants. Ordering take out though? Unless its sushi and I can tip the chef directly they aren't getting anything because I know for a fact front of house doesn't tip out back of house and if they do its miniscule and I refuse to tip a server when they aren't even the ones who bagged my food up and provided me no service other than handing me my food.

One time when I was 15 I went to a sit down restaurant and paid for my own food for the first time in my life.
I can’t remember if I tipped or not.
I’ve been thinking about it ever since.
Here in the US, TIP YOUR SERVERS AND BARTENDERS.

Tipping is getting out of control. The whole amount should reflect on the service. I don’t think places should add gratuity unless your a party of 6 or more. And the extra line for extra tipping fck that..

Why would that matter Rob, trust and dbeleive that every server are talking about customers that tip well or don’t. It’s obvious if your a usual customer and how they treat you man.

Rob said at the very beginning the reason why he tips. They had him second guessing but he essentially does it to have a good reputation at the establishment so he gets good service next time. Nothing wrong with that. These interactions are all transactional anyways. Has nothing to do with being “good”. I’m with you Rob.

I work room service, automatic gratuity is great but it’s not always a lot. Running up with a pot of coffee guest might want extra steamed milk + almond milk/ pitcher water/ bucket of ice.. AUTOMATIC GRATUITY WILL LITERALLY BE 0.90$ so YES on that order you’re a dick if you don’t tip! But all depends on the order

As a waitress in a club, I can assure you I don't own a single 6k pair of shoes. It would take me roughly 5 months to clear 20k in tips. You have no idea what you're talking about. I also live in one of the biggest metropolitan cities in the world.
