Bojar practised judo in the Czech Republic before becoming interested in sumo. Sumo is more popular in the Czech Republic than in any other European country, with ten sumo clubs containing some 600 members, and he was trained by Jaroslav Poříz , president of the Czech Sumo Association, After winning the bronze medal in the 2000 Junior World Sumo Championships in Tokyo, he was accepted by Naruto stable, a heya in Chiba run by former yokozuna Takanosato. After passing the physical exam, he made his official debut in November 2001.
He was given the shikona of Takanoyama, meaning "noble mountain." He reached the sandanme division in January 2003, and the third highest makushita division in March 2004. He fell back to sandanme after only two tournaments but returned to makushita in March 2005 and largely remained there for the next six years, unable to break through to the elite sekitori ranks.
Takanoyama was hampered mostly by an inability to put on weight. His height of 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) and weight of 90 kg (200 lb; 14 st) make him among the lightest sumo wrestlers in the modern era. In November 2008 he climbed as high as makushita 13, beating his previous high of makushita 15 set in November 2005, and he moved up to makushita 9 in January 2009. After compiling a 5-2 record in the July tournament, which included a win over the former maegashira Ryūhō, he reached a new highest rank of makushita 4 in September 2009. He produced another good score of 5-2 in May 2010 from makushita 6, which included wins over Jūmonji and Hōchiyama. In January 2011 a 6-1 score saw him promoted to a new highest rank of makushita 2 for the May "technical examination tournament." There he scored 5-2, guaranteeing promotion to the jūryō division for July. When the banzuke was released on June 27, Takanoyama was at #5 West, the tenth highest rank in the 26 man division. It took him 57 tournaments from his professional debut to reach jūryō, the second slowest among foreign born wrestlers after the Brazilian Wakaazuma.
He had a successful jūryō debut, winning seven of his first eight bouts and finishing on 10-5. This earned him immediate promotion to the top makuuchi division for the September 2011, only the third time since the six tournaments a year system was established in 1958 that a jūryō debutant has achieved this (the other two were Daikiko and Ichihara). Weighing in before the tournament at just 98 kg (216 lb; 15.4 st), he was the first wrestler under 100 kilos in the top division since Mainoumi in 1997.
Due to the judo training, his fighting technique is very elegant and surprising for a heavier opponent and his speed reinforces this effect.( from Wiki)

The best part of sumo is when a small sumo wrestler defeats a bigger one. Thanks for a wonderful RIKISHI from the Czech Republic!!!
I like it when Enho or Wakatakakage or even Tobizaru win against me like Ichinojo, Akua, Tochinoshin who are bigger guys. It’s truly amazing. I really enjoy sumo.
Key I recognized for the smaller guy was balance. Even when he looked off-balance, he was actually creating imbalance in his opponent. Simply fascinating control of the body.
I feel like you'd like sumo if you noticed something like this. Hakuho definitely has the best balance in sumo, and is also the goat at sumo

Sumo is the SPORT. The wrestlers are known as RIKISHI.
I don’t follow sumo much but there’s definitely some similarities to judo. Using your opponent’s momentum to your advantage. Even seeing some judo throws there- uchi mata where we picks up the opponent through the legs. Cool stuff!
Except mma there's no fighting sport that is interesting nowadays, sumo has more unexpected outcomes which makes it funner to watch.
I can only imagine he woke up one morning and said: you know, I think I want to be a Sumo wrestler.

The japanese treat their traditions as an overarching personality that they live within, which is why foreigners who don't accept it's existence are looked down upon as if they're willfully blind.

I like this man, doing something untraditionally and beating the norm, brave
Norm? being fat in sumo is never the norm, its the only fighting sport with NO WEIGHT DIVISION. You can fight anyone you want, skinny or fat. The manliest sport in the world is sumo.
Unfortunately he retired a couple years ago he was popular but towards the end of his career he wasn’t winning a lot and in an exit interview he was quoted as saying that in sumo you have to be big. It’s too much wear and tear on the body
HE ALSO COMPETED AGAINST HAKUHO BUT DIDN'T LAST LONG
Actually, and I didn't know this until very recently, being fat in sumo isn't even an old tradition.
It's been less than a hundred years ago when most sumo wrestlers looked muscular and lean.
I assume it was probably modern life and the resulting availability of copious amounts of food, plus the fact that there are no weight classes, which made a lot of them bulk up that crazy, believing more weight will give them an edge.
@@josceola8979 They aren't eating junk food at all... I don't know what I said to offend you. It's totally true that they eat themselves fat to gain a weight advantage, and it's true that they have been doing it for less than 100 years. I'm well aware that they also have muscle under all that fat.

Look at the old guy at the far left edge of the screen at 5:35. He's like WTF!!!!
Oh idk. sumo and judo overlap pretty heavily, so its kind of difficult to be a hardcore fan of one with out at least admiring the other, so i imagine the sumo guys definitely see the beauty in his technique. Also this dude, despite being a dope ass dude, didn't make it far past the middle ground of competition. Once you start running into guys this big, who are just as good as you in technique, its pretty much impossible to compete. This is coming from a 155 pound jiu jitsu guy who tears into 200lb plus white belts on the regular.
Actually his techniques are pretty standard. The foot sweep he constantly used? That's a named move in sumo. (I don't remember exactly how it's named tho, but that's definitely a thing.)

This video doesn't show most of the time he suffers in this two-monthly tournament. He lasted only 5 tournament in top divisions and his highest rank is Maegashira 12 (out of 15 Maegashira, where 30 sumo wrestlers in Maegashira divided by west and east) (And, Maegashira is the lowest ranks in top divisions). Most of the time he struggles.
But, having him in sumo tournament and his win is a blissful experience and joy. He had the techniques, but not the body. Maybe before 1960s, where the average of sumo wrestlers weight is close to the average of peoples weight, he would become an ozeki (second highest rank in top divisions).
I think you meant to say there are 6 annual tournaments now and he participated in just 5 in the top division. Still ... That is a remarkable accomplishment given his size and background.

Sumo used to be extremely interesting back in the early 90s. Takanohana, Wakanohana, Akebono, Konishiki, Mainoumi, Terao, Mitoizumi, lots of great personalities and rivalries.
He is also known under his name " Hold my beer"

No solo basta la fuerza, tambien hay que luchar con inteligencia y es lo que le sobra a este hombre!
